***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (1 Viewer)

I don't mind the cookie monster vocals at all. What I can't stand are the bands that are extremely heavy with intense vocals and all of a sudden break into this melodic, clean sounding chorus and totally take me out of the song. I think the first band I remember doing that was Killswitch Engage. Never liked them.
I'm with you on that.  I actually don't mind it at its core - the heavy lyric and the melodic chorus, but the problem is that bands that employ this tend to do it in every single song and eventually it all starts sounding like a pattern.  Sevendust was one of the forerunners of this (although the intense vocals were still somewhat melodic just by the nature of Lajon's voice/style) and Killswitch is an even more dramatic yin/yang.  I liked both of those bands initially but just grew weary of them over time because every new song I heard sounded tired; like I'd heard it 10 times already.  Both still come up with some cool melodies/riffs, but I just don't buy their records or go see them live any longer.

Yeah, the heavy riffs are usually really great along with the vocals but as you say, the yin/yang of the chorus always throws me. Something I could never get into and instantly has me changing the channel. I seem to hear a lot less of it now.

Napalm Death is one of my all-time favorite bands, so I agree. That said, when I think of the metal bands that I connect with most on a gut level, it's the bands like Judas Priest or Dio. I think actual singers just are musically more interesting.
Agreed. Granted, I love me some old school Opeth (who growled a lot on their first nine albums), and I am a HUGE fan of Devin Townsend (who throws in the occasional growl, but is more of a singer and screamer), but I still agree with you. Every other metal act I like has a "normal" singer (very little growling or screaming).

Exhorder  is doing a couple of shows in Brooklyn and one in New Orleans.   If anybody can get there, I highly recommend it.  True pioneers that changed everything.

This was the first time I  had heard anything like this.   Or this.

Opeth are probably my favorite metal band of the past 20 years, and they do this.  :kicksrock:

These guys are great!

Meshuggah - Bleed...   "This makes Slayer sound like Taylor Swift".   "This would be on Jeffrey Dahmer's playlist"

Kudos to them saying it was the best drumming they've heard.

I really enjoyed them listening to the Gojira video.
It is great how in tune they are to the genre and styles without knowing much.   The comments about Iron Maiden's theatricality how they imagine the stage set up, Dream Theater's wankery and basically playing for a grade and not for enjoyable music, Tool's next level lyrics,  etc. are spot on (at least they jive with my feelings).

Definitely. I think the gimmick of honestly reviewing music they aren't intimately familiar with is a good one.

Maybe a bit too fancy for some of you hardcore type dudes, but these guys seem to be ok.

There's no doubt that Dream Theater features some of the best musicians that ever lived. John Petrucci makes Jimmy Page sound like Ted Nugent. I remember hearing "Pull Me Under" for the first time and being instantly intrigued. But that was a great band with a bad singer. If you want to typify the problem with Dream Theater, this is the second song on the album that directly follows Pull Me Under. Lame.

Like Doggy said, there is 0 dispute over the talent level of those guys - it's off the charts.  However, that song you linked is a perfect example of why I can't take more than a song of theirs - it feels like "look at us" noodling around and less like making a song anybody would like listening too.   The song goes in 100 directions and has no flow to it.  Also people bag on cookie monster growls, but DTs singer's voice makes my balls suck back into my body.  Can't stand it.

Mikael Akerfeldt might be one of the best musicians of all time.
It's a bold statement, but I wouldn't argue a ton with you about.  I think they are amazing and I would guess the most listened to band for me during the last decade or so (I was late to the game discovering them).

He won't get a ton of recognition in popular circles, but I can't think of many musicians with that kind of vocal range and technical prowess with a guitar.  Not to mention the song writing.

That guy should be singing in a boy band, not a hard rock band.
