***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (2 Viewers)

I am torn on Anselmo. It appears that Anselmo alienated all of Pantera with his drinking so badly that Anselmo was not invited to Dimebag's funeral. Tragic. But I've seen Anselmo interviewed a few times, and he just looks broken and full of remorse. I don't know, I guess I feel bad for him at this point.
It's also entirely possible that he's a closet white supremacist.

I remember back in HS when everyone thought I was a Satanist because I wore Metallica shirts. I said "Hey! One day, we'll see a woman figure skating to a piano/string rendition of one of their songs in a Toyota commercial. You watch!"  No one believed me.

I always turned a few heads with my Slayer Haunting The Chapel t-shirt in school.I never owned a hair metal shirt though even though I fully admit I did like a few songs done in that era.For me it was about the harder music and I actually looked at the hair bands as just glammed up rock with some attitude thrown in.But as has been said many times to each their own and I don't knock anyone for the crappy music they may like :lmao: .

Loved Pantera but no question Phil went off the rails so that does taint them musically when you look back.It happens to a bunch of people who can't handle fame and eventually the truth with come to the surface and sometimes it ain't pretty.

Still a slippery slope if we start boycotting the music when the artist is a jerk or a racist. Slayer illustrates this.

I saw him fronting a band called Madam X before he joined Skid Row. Girls on guitar and drums.
He used to live less than 10 minutes from me.  I ran into him once at a supermarket and again later at a Motorhead show.  He threw me his Bob Marley joint across the corner of the stage.  I hit it twice (puff puff give....) and threw it back.  I thought I was going to die, that #### was so strong.  He was smoking it like a cigar.

And for you guitar nerds this is a guitar playthrough of Perpetual Infinity by Rafael Trujillo of Obscura.(Since some seemed to not like the vocals)

Based on the recommendation to listen to Liquid Metal here, I've been listening a lot. I am shocked at what I consider hardcore, yet is played on that station. Bands like Hatebreed, Downset and Vision of Disorder.

I mean, I saw VOD at the PWAC on Long Island with H2O and Silent Majority. Wouldn't consider them metal. But whatever.

BSS LISTS:

To me the 10 most IMPORTANT  (I say important because they lead to major shifts in the sound/style of music)bands in the history of Hard Rock/Metal are:

Zeppelin & Sabbath - ode to Sam Dunn - laid the foundation for all Metal to come

Motorhead - introduced the punk sound

Metallica - thrash metal legends

Motley Crue - scoff if you will but hair METAL took it all to the mainstream

Nirvana - Soundgarden - AIC- grunge is metal, changed the world

Korn - started the nu metal movement for better or worse, changed how bands tuned their guitars and the sound

Kyuss - pioneers of the Stoner/Doom metal sound - Josh Homme and Brant Bjork talent/bands and pure music cannot be denied, QOTSA, Fu Manchu, dessert sessisons etc...

My favorite bands in order since I was in the 2nd grade in 1980:

KISS

AC/DC

Zeppelin

Metallica

Alice in Chains

Korn

Monster Magnet

Clutch

Foo Fighters

IMO the 10 BEST bands in metal history (no order)

Sabbath

Metallica

Motorhead

Judas Priest

Pantera

Guns n Roses

Rainbow

Iron Maiden

Slayer

Zepplein - yes I think LZ is metal

Bands that I love that are underrated and I listened to a ton at various times:

Clutch

Mastodon (ok maybe not underrated but I love them)

Incubus

The Cult

Deftones

Testament

Death Angel

Coroner

QOTSA

Newer #### that I listen to a lot:

The Sword

Rival Sons

Scorpion Child

Royal Blood

Red Fang

Mastodon

Wolfmother

The one single most overrated band in metal:

Iron Maiden - just never were my thing man.

Just one head bangers opinion

Complete opposite for me.  Maiden was my gateway into metal around those pivotal 5th-6th grade year and I have loved them ever since.   Couldn't get enough of the snapping bass, cover art, vocals, history themed songs, etc..  A couple turd albums in the 90s, but IMO if you like what they bring to the table, no metal band has as many great albums.  Everything from Killers --> 7th Son kicks ### and their post 2000 return to the genre has been amazing as well.  Book of Life is arguably the best thing they have done, and that is what - 35+ years from their start?

Anyway, I am too ADD for these lists and struggle with favorite or best/most influential.  I chose to answer the question desert island style - if I had to pack today and could only take along the music of 3 metal bands, they would be...

Iron Maiden, Opeth, Sabbath

#3 would change on a daily basis for me, and the next wave for me would be stuff like:  Slayer, Priest, Mastodon, Deftones, Megadeth, Meshuggah,

I guess that means my overrated would be Metallica.  Peak output, MoP era they were unstoppable.   I just think that other bands' albums have hit almost as high as MoP, but they have more good albums and/or have put out quality output for a longer period of time.   I think new wave of Metallica is just plain bad, and at the same time bands like Maiden, Slayer, Testament, Megadeth, Exodus, etc, etc.  have managed to put out damn good albums in the last decade or so.

Pretty good comments until the end.  The end nullifies everything you wrote.  You sir, are dead to me.

Ted Nugent is a jackass - but he kicked some ### back in the day.
I was never a Nugent fan. Before I discovered metal music, my rock of choice was Boston, ELO, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC.

My friend and I have this stupid skit we do about Ted Nugent:

ME: "Ted Nugent sucks."
HIM: "Yeah, he's a right-wing nut-bag."
ME: "He is???"
