The one single most overrated band in metal:
Iron Maiden - just never were my thing man.
Complete opposite for me. Maiden was my gateway into metal around those pivotal 5th-6th grade year and I have loved them ever since. Couldn't get enough of the snapping bass, cover art, vocals, history themed songs, etc.. A couple turd albums in the 90s, but IMO if you like what they bring to the table, no metal band has as many great albums. Everything from Killers --> 7th Son kicks ### and their post 2000 return to the genre has been amazing as well. Book of Life is arguably the best thing they have done, and that is what - 35+ years from their start?
Anyway, I am too ADD for these lists and struggle with favorite or best/most influential. I chose to answer the question desert island style - if I had to pack today and could only take along the music of 3 metal bands, they would be...
Iron Maiden, Opeth, Sabbath
#3 would change on a daily basis for me, and the next wave for me would be stuff like: Slayer, Priest, Mastodon, Deftones, Megadeth, Meshuggah,
I guess that means my overrated would be Metallica. Peak output, MoP era they were unstoppable. I just think that other bands' albums have hit almost as high as MoP, but they have more good albums and/or have put out quality output for a longer period of time. I think new wave of Metallica is just plain bad, and at the same time bands like Maiden, Slayer, Testament, Megadeth, Exodus, etc, etc. have managed to put out damn good albums in the last decade or so.
