***OFFICIAL*** FFA Heavy Music Thread - No banal, anodyne "Dad Rock" BS here.. (1 Viewer)

Definitely. Lots of big acts would play there. It was my only time there though and I nearly got pummeled by a bunch of bikers. The club had this pit area in front of the stage  that was lower than the rest of the club. Around it was a railing to keep people from falling in. During the show,  I apparently was pushing the railing back and forth, getting into the music, and didn't realize I hit someone with it in the head that was in the lower pit. Some guy comes up to me saying that I hit someone in the head with a pipe and I was like, wtf are you talking about. That's when I realized that a lot of people were looking at me. The guy advised me that i should probably gtfo. Once i noticed that a lot of the guys in the area were wearing colors, i decided to take him up on his advice. I grabbed my friends and said it was time to go but one friend didn't follow. I had to go back in to get him. I grabbed a tire iron or crow bar or whatever it was from the trunk of the car and put it up the sleeve of my MC and went back in. He was standing next to the sound board watching the audio guy do his thing. I grabbed him and dragged him out. We ran to the car and just as we drove away, like 20 guys come spilling out of the club, looking around. Thankfully the pipe up my sleeve was never used upside my head which no doubt would have been the outcome.

Great night!

EPIC!

Not excited to see the last Slayer tour. Love Lamb of God, but I've seen them twice. Don't care about Anthrax, and I've already seen Testament. But Behemoth. There's a band I really want to see headline.

Side note : I listened to Mastodon's "Emperor of Sand" a bunch of times when it was released a year ago and liked it. It kind of got back-burnered for other stuff for a while, but I broke it back out last week. I liked it even more after not hearing it for a while. Great record.

Speaking of Mastodon, and stick with me, I listened to the new Sleep, which is great, but I remembered that I liked Matt Pike’s other band, High on Fire, so I revisited some of that #### and it’s awesome. It sounds like, wait for it, Mastodon.

Totally does.

In fact, I got Sirius radio back in about 2005 or so after my brother got it. I got in his car and he turned on Hard Attack and "Devilution" came on. I couldn't believe it, it was the first time I'd heard a band like that on radio since I moved out of NJ and lost WSOU (best over-air radio station of all time; I will not argue this.) I signed up the next day. All because of High on Fire.

SOU was awesome. But the Strecth and Bobitto show on Columbia 89.9 was pretty special also. I remember some of those live bands that would come in to SOU. Murphys Law stands out. Those were good times.

KEXP. WFMU. Others...

Love ya, EG.

Hear this one Trivium song on Liquid Metal all the time. Decided to give their latest album a spin on my run. Meh.

Really digging Honeycomb. Looking forward to the album.
Going to see them in July in a small club in Orlando. So far, I'm rolling solo. Haven't been able to find anyone willing to check them out on a weeknight, even with a pretty decent network of metal heads I know in the area. Slayer/Lamb of God/Anthrax/Testament/Behemoth was a much easier sell.

Bands “evolving” is overrated imo.
It really depends on the band, IMO. You have a band like deftones who started off as more of a nu-metal act and over the years, refined and updated their sound to rise several levels above their contemporaries. Then you have bands like Motorhead who never changed at all and shouldn't have. You always knew what to expect from an album of theirs, or AC/DC's, and it always felt like that's the way it should be.

Metal is a tough genre to evolve with. One band I can think of that I like more now than in the beginning is Gojira. Their early stuff features more of a growling grindcore sound. They've lost some of their hardcore fans with their last album, but I prefer it. More melodic.

Great example.  Much like deftones, I appreciate their entire oeuvre and can listen to all of it and enjoy it.
