HERB PENNOCK

Every great team has a strong mix of hitting and pitching. The 1927 New York Yankees had "Murderer’s Row" of Ruth, Gehrig, and company to provide offensive explosions. The pitching staff was just as instrumental in the team’s success. The staff was anchored by left-handed journeyman, Herb Pennock. When the Yankees traded for Pennock in 1923, they figured to get a few solid starts out of the ten-year veteran. What they got was an ace that would perform brilliantly for ten more seasons and compile a perfect 5-0 World Series record. When all was said and done and his career ended in 1934, Pennock tallied a 240-162 record and completed an astounding 247 games. In 1948, Herb Pennock joined many of his Yankee teammates in Cooperstown with his election to baseball’s Hall of Fame.

Pitcher for Philadelphia Athletics 1912-15

Boston Red Sox 1915-22 and 1934

New York Yankees 1923-33

Earned 33 career saves Compiled a perfect 5-0 record in World Series Play Had a league-leading .

760 winning percentage in 1923

Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1948.

Led the league in innings pitched in 1925

Logged 247 complete games in his career

By sheer coincidence, the top name on Cap's list is Pennock's staffmate.

Capella take:

22.13 SP Waite Hoyt

...

Do I remember correctly that lastresort PMed someone his picks?

.

Just did my team total win share574.5 (with three picks left)Pitching 212.2Position players 362.3
Interesting. Didn't think it would be that close between your teams and the post-1994 guys. Thought you would blow us out of the water.Even with three picks left it'll be relatively close since we're each missing two of our guys. Cool.

Considering the Negro league guys you all took you would have to assume they are at least high 20's in win share, so you guys should be close to right up there if my number is close to average for the league. Of course Nipsey will be looking at us all in the reir view so we're really just playing it out for second place.

Actually, I would bet that the WS for the Negro League guys we took were all 30+ but we'll never really know. Gibson and Charleston had to be 40+ each. Bell and Lloyd were probably in the 25 range. The pitchers were probably in the 30 range.Nipsey's team is very tough.

GWB - Looking at the spreadsheets you emailed me. Is there anything that translates the playerID to a real name? ex. Hank Aaron is aaronha01.

Nope. That's the downside with them. If you go to the Baseball Archive website you can download the Lahman database (in comma delimited) and use the Master sheet to compare names. Otherwise, you pretty much have to decipher them.

Just got this PM from Capella:

I don't want to say this in the thread, but wanted to let you know, I think the team you've drafted may be the best I've ever seen, including the all-time all-star teams that so called "experts" have put together in the past. Just a tremendous effort on your part. Not sure exactly how you did it, but you did it nonetheless. I'll be thinking about your team for many, many years to come. Capella
Thanks Capella. You're a stand up guy.

Actually, give me a little while. I may be able to cut and paste the name columns from the Lahman db to the Win Shares sheet. There should be the exact same players included in both so it should match up exactly.

Do you ever get tired of getting so many propers?

If you have a spreadsheet or txt file with player name and player id I can do a vlookup in excel to get what I need. TIA
It actually wasn't to bad just scrolling through, took me about 20 minutes.Do a Ctrl F and type in the first 5-6 letters of a guys name that helps.

I have to say, I do. I just want to be one of the regular people and not put up on a pedestal all the time. It still makes me smile though and I always appreciate honest opinion.

Mockertramavesty. or something.

Mickey Tettleton is gone - but xxxxxxxx remains unpicked? :(
The catcher you mentioned was probably a better everyday catcher than Tettleton, but Tettleton was the better hitter. Better OB%, better SLG%.In building a team, Tettleton has much more value as a backup C than xxxxx would, imo.

I think his point was that he was surprised Tettleton was even selected.I was too

I think when you get to backups and role players, then the "best player" is not neccesarily the best choice for a team.

No problem. And thank you for your kind PM which I will post at a later time.

I'm actually working on that already.
Is there a way to get VLOOKUP to lookup two columns and ouput the information from the 3rd?There are duplicate names so in some cases you're going to need to be able to look up both names to get the ID. And then when you go to look up the number of Win Shares, you're going to need to be able to lookup the ID and then the year you want the Win Shares from.Where's wilked?

You can use =concatenate to make those two columns one and then do your vlookup. Can you type up a little example of what you're looking for?

22.16 selection - Heinie Manush
I cant believe this guy was still around. I seriously thought about taking him when I went Lofton, but it didnt fit my needs.Basically, better than Edgar Martinez, and fills the same role. The PERFECT pinch hitter.

Plus, the guys name is Heinie. I mean, really.

Bonds Barry bondba01In order to get the ID (bondba01), I have a VLOOKUP formula looking up Bonds. But, it could also bring up his father. It doesn't because Barry is first alphabetically but for other players this isn't the case. I need it to look up the first two columns so I can get the third.bondba01 2002 35Then, in another column, I need another VLOOKUP formula to use the data from the third (bondba01) along with the year (2002) to get the Win Shares (35).Make sense?

After taking one former Cardinal, it only seems appropriate to take another, right? And who better than my childhood hero:

C/1B/3B Todd Zeile- bio

He played 105 games at catcher in 1990, so he qualifies there. No the most flashy of players, and was pretty average when you really look at it. Average fielder, too. However, he came through for me during an extra innings ballgame in 1991 (I was 6 years old) when I predicted it, so he's #1 in my books.
