***OFFICIAL*** FFA MLB Draft (1 Viewer)

Do you rate the guys that are not "key" bench players and include that in your analysis too?  I think you should rate teams based on their entire bench, especially the pitchers.  Real MLB staffs are usually 12 pitchers and these teams are only carrying 10, which in my mind makes them very important.Just my  :2cents:
every player picked is rated. there are just different weightings for the various groups, based on the idea of their relative playing time (plate appearances, IPs). Right now, the weight for the ranking of your starters (8 batters, 5 pitchers) is an 8. The weighting for the ranking of your top bench players (4 batters, 2-3 pitchers) is a 3. And the weighting for the ranking of the rest of the team is a 1.edited again... not explaining this right

Are you going to post your rankings thus far or will you be keeping us in suspense until the draft is complete?

I see what you're saying - makes sense to me.

Oso - do your rankings take into account any "soft" measures other than Bill James' take - i.e. points for MVP, HoF, even All Star or Gold Gloves (although the later two and especially the last might not have much value). There are many players that were far greater than their numbers, and these may be a way to bring out the "intangibles" for such players.

Again, just an idea/suggestion.
IWKS, will probably keep up the suspense, at least until i get the formulas right. still tweaking. ;) Koya, one of the metrics i use is a combination of the 4 Hall-of-Fame related measures...

Black Ink Test

Gray Ink Test
HOF Monitor
HOF StandardsAll can be found at Baseball Reference.

I take all 4, and create a single metric, ranking batters & pitchers separately. I max the rankings at 200 each, so no player will be ranked worse than 200 on this metric. This provides a good mix of peak (the first 2) and career (the last 2).

Defense is measured by the fielding component in Win Shares, and by another metric called Fielding Runs Above Replacement - a measure of how much better that player is vs. a replacement level player at the same position. It is also implicitly in the HOF measures, and the James rankings.

Sounds great, look forward to your findings

The success of this thread shows how easy it would be for Joe & Co. to spin off their site into baseball version. The FFA seems to care more about baseball than football.. and the discourse is way above anything you'd see equivalently in the shark tank.

Well, yes. The problem is that people hate the idea of another board to join. That will change in time, I think. It's just silly how many excellent minds hang out here. That's the true value of this site.. not the staff commentary.

yup. I haven't read one word of a FBG-published article in a year. Here for the witty banter and stay for the easy chicks. By the way, looking forward to seeing the smack talk once we get into the sim games over at WIS. That should be fun, matching up with everybody.

Tell him to switch the damn address to forums.beisboltangent.com and i'm there. For some reason my companies internet filter doesn't pick up that this board is a sports site eventhough it thinks the regular footballguys.com site is

Speaking of which, what's the deal with that? Do you guys want to try and enter the post-1994 teams into WIS as well or is that strictly a tool for your draft? Either way is cool with me.Don't think we've even discussed this before.

I've been thinking about that..it would be 3 less 'dummy' teams we have to account for, but I'm not sure what everybody's opinion of it would be.Personally, I'd love to have you guys join, although I think you may have the best teams. All in fun anyways though, and you guys have been here throughout.

I would have no problem with it. I think their lineups are great, but pitching we have the advantage. Will be interesting to see, at the least! If possible, they should all be in a separate division w/ the dummy teams.

I don't think our teams are going to stack up to be honest. The pitching is going to be ugly and our 3rd best seasons are going to be pretty sad in comparison to the HOF guys.

I have several thoughts on applying the concepts of portfolio theory to fantasy sports. Unfortunately, I have neither the time (work and B-school) nor the inclination to do so. I also think 20 years from now people will conclude FF is at least 75% luck since the sample sizes to base projections on are so small. Baseball is another matter and I think a lot of these concepts would work better here since it's much easier to do projections. :nerd:

Actually, I looked at it wrong. I'm $44 million over without my two Negro Leaguers. Also, I have 11 pitchers and only 10 pitching spots. How would that work?

where we at in this thing? Also, big  to Capella as this is coming to a close. Great job! Great job everybody else too. The sim should be fun. Also thanks for helping me out Oso, !
