every player picked is rated. there are just different weightings for the various groups, based on the idea of their relative playing time (plate appearances, IPs). Right now, the weight for the ranking of your starters (8 batters, 5 pitchers) is an 8. The weighting for the ranking of your top bench players (4 batters, 2-3 pitchers) is a 3. And the weighting for the ranking of the rest of the team is a 1.edited again... not explaining this rightDo you rate the guys that are not "key" bench players and include that in your analysis too? I think you should rate teams based on their entire bench, especially the pitchers. Real MLB staffs are usually 12 pitchers and these teams are only carrying 10, which in my mind makes them very important.Just my

I take all 4, and create a single metric, ranking batters & pitchers separately. I max the rankings at 200 each, so no player will be ranked worse than 200 on this metric. This provides a good mix of peak (the first 2) and career (the last 2).
Defense is measured by the fielding component in Win Shares, and by another metric called Fielding Runs Above Replacement - a measure of how much better that player is vs. a replacement level player at the same position. It is also implicitly in the HOF measures, and the James rankings.

I've been thinking about that..it would be 3 less 'dummy' teams we have to account for, but I'm not sure what everybody's opinion of it would be.Personally, I'd love to have you guys join, although I think you may have the best teams. All in fun anyways though, and you guys have been here throughout.

I don't think our teams are going to stack up to be honest. The pitching is going to be ugly and our 3rd best seasons are going to be pretty sad in comparison to the HOF guys.I've been thinking about that..it would be 3 less 'dummy' teams we have to account for, but I'm not sure what everybody's opinion of it would be.Personally, I'd love to have you guys join, although I think you may have the best teams. I have several thoughts on applying the concepts of portfolio theory to fantasy sports. Unfortunately, I have neither the time (work and B-school) nor the inclination to do so. I also think 20 years from now people will conclude FF is at least 75% luck since the sample sizes to base projections on are so small.
