Goodfellas take a close first game. Foxx and Killebrew get shut down but my surprise money player, Elston Howard, comes up big. Great matchup this afternoon. My team has been pounding LHP but Koufax has been terrific. I'm on a hot streak right now and I can't even gain a lead in the division because the ******* Rabbits never lose.

Simmed today's Marichal vs. Koufax match up 10 time. Teams split 5 to 5. Surprisingly high scoring games and both teams beat the other by at least 5 runs once. About as even a match up as it gets. Could go either way.

I guess I have to say it's still Alomar. Brilliant or brutal. Rube Waddell is surprising as I thought he was a poor man's Grove. The strikeouts have been excellent but the ERA is 4.50 and he gets hit harder than I would've expected. Then again, maybe a 4.50 ERA is solid in this league.EDIT: 4.82 ERA actually.

Easy, Rickey Henderson. With him batting a whopping 0.174, its like having a pitcher hitting leadoff. It really hurts as I took him in the second round and built my entire offense around him getting on base. He has stolen 16 bases so far (second on the team behind Hamilton's 20) but I am thinking about dropping him to eighth for a while and see what happens.

Hmm I havent even looked at it by games lost. If Grove performed as well as he should, shoot, we are talking at LEAST 5 games. That is huge. Some that he lost outright and other games lost because it ####ed up my bullpen, especially a closer.

I have a bunch:1) My whole pitching staff except for Al Leiter. Startets Spahn, Schilling, and Plank are like batting practice for opponents. Combined bullpen ERA is around 8.00.

2) Ryne Sandberg hitting 200 over 28 games and getting benched.

3) George Brett hitting .276.

4) Musial started off cold, got hot, then cold again. He's hitting 35 points below his RL average.

5) Eddie Murray is 52 points below his average.

6) Tim Raines struggled most of the season to stay above .200. Even with a recent hot streak, he's still hitting 30 points below his average.

7) Ernie Lombardi has shown nice power, but is hitting over 40 points below his average.

My ablatross has been my bullpen. Shantz has been much worse than his stats would indicate so he's currently getting "rest". Reardon has blown 5 saves and is 1-5. My two best pitchers so far are Grimes and Leever in long relief. Leever's kept me in some games until my offense has come around.My entire offense is still underpreforming, but I think that is a function of pitching. Though I shouldn't be complaining since my power numbers are some of the best. When my lineup is clicking, it's a thing of beauty. The only guy I'm really dissappointed in is Carew. He just doesn't get on enough. As a result Doerr has been playing against lefties. The one thing that continues to piss me off is the lack of situational hitting and that's not just on my team. I think average pitching so far is an ERA in the mid 4s.

I can understand 1/4 season hitting stats being lower - although the Rickey thing is a bit extreme. But all these pitching issues and bullpen issues confound me. A great pitcher has more control over his success than any other player, so I am amazed that some guys really suck.I suppose if you play at wis a bunch, you know which players underperform and which overperform. For example, although the pick was a fav pick and not fishing, Sid Fernandez's key numbers - opponents average and whip - are very very low. But he sucks. I wouldnt argue that because sid is not an altime great. Except even ok deadballers seem to pitch like randy johnson in this thing. definately some quirks over in wis.

I think some of it is whoever it is has to be the best in that year (I'm glad no one knew that before doing it)I think this is one of the reasons Grimes is doing so well. In 1920 he had the best OAV. I also think this is one of the reasons the RP are fairing so badly, they simply aren't tops ever in these internal measure Whatif uses.The batting stats should be lower overall since they aren't facing the "average" for that season, but instead above average pitching though that doesn't explain Henderson.

Ryan's interesting because his BB/9 is just so absurdly high. He's on pace to walk close to 200 batters which is just amazing . You just aren't going to win games walking a guy an inning.

Totally agree with this, a runner on second and no outs I've seen pop out-strike out-ground out way to many times, I don't care who is up at the plate, move the runner over(especially in a tight game).
