Nnamdi Asomugha, CB, OAK (exclusive tender)

The Raiders have slapped with with an exclusive tag . . . meaning he cannot negotiatie with other teams at all and yielding him a contract worth the average of the Top 5 CB from 2008. By comparison, a non-exclusive tender would have given him the average of Top 5 CB from 2007.

Might make him the most overpaid player next year. Seriously. Perhaps they are just offering him the one year deal and will reach a more modest multi-year deal with the leverage over him. Two one year contracts in a row make me think he's not getting a lot of action from other teams.

How long has there been a choice of exclusive and non exclusive? Or is that fallout from the Hutchinson fiasco?

Thats was a transition tag.

I know what it was, and it pretty much made the transition tag unusable, so I am wondering if the exclusive/non exclusive tag came into play because of that. They (supposedly) didn't use the franchise tag on him because they wanted him to be able to talk to other teams to gauge his market value. If the non exclusive was available then, it seems like that would be what they would've used. Seems to me the non exclusive is the same as the transition tag without the threat of poison pill contracts.

As long as they have had the franchise tag as far as I know. Most teams don't use it because the non-exclusive one costs them less money and usually accomplishes the same thing. For a non-exclusive franchise tag, the player can still be signed by another team but it would cost the new team two first round draft picks. That normally is enough to keep suitors at bay.

Randy??????? Nothing yet. I'm surprised.
I was just going to post the same thing. They had until 4:00 EST to tag him......
But they don't have to make an announcement at all. All they had to do was notify the league ny 4:00. And the Pats have not said anything one way or the other.People I know related to the team told me yesterday that they fully expected Moss to be franchised today. But I just checked and even they don't have an answer as to what the team did officially.

thanks keep us updated

But bear in mind that if they signed him to a contract they could not annouce it until the start of the new NFL year (2/29).

MOSS NOT TAGGED.
Wow. If they didn't sign him either that has to go down as one of the most questionable decisions ever.
Why
Cause as of now they have Welker at Wr and nothing else. 7.8 million for what Randy does for that offense is a bargain. Especially when you just saved that by cutting Stallworth and Chad Jackson.
Chad Jackson wasn't cut, and doesn't save much of anything if he is. He's due 500k, but I think if he's cut pre 6/1, he costs nothing on the cap ( I saw a $600 figure or something close )

To answer the logical question that people will ask . . .

Moss redid his deal once this year to be able to come to the Patriots and league rules prohibit reowrking a deal until the following season starts. Don't ask me why, that's how it is.

So the Pats could not announce a new deal until the new season starts (2/29).

I had heard throughout the season that Moss and the Patriots had been in discussions about a deal (off the record of course), so it would really not be surprising if they had a deal worked out already.

From everything and everyone I know the consensus all along was the Pats and Moss were still the honeymooners in love, so I would be EXTREMELY surprised if he is allowed to walk.

Jackson is still there. I believe you mean Kelley Washington, as cutting him saved a $4 million roster bonus and $900K in salary.

Yeah Washington, sorry.
