Main thread is getting a bit cluttered with Red Sox haters, this is the thread to talk about Game 6.

Shields vs Beckett

Shields has been the better pitcher this postseason, by a wide margin. Beckett clearly doesn't have his best stuff. What Beckett has is a history of rising to the occasion and an impeccable October resume (2008 excluded).

Beckett won't have his best stuff by any stretch of the imagination, so it comes down to what he can do to adjust, much like Schilling in 04. It should be interesting. Meanwhile, Shields has been very good, but is in a high-pressure spot. Will he let that enter his head?

Gonna be huge, can't wait till tomorrow night.

If the Rays were filled with guys with the mental makeup of Arod, I'd be worried.

They're not.

Rays win 6-3.

Just like I said before the ALCS started.

Rays in 6

Sadly I don't see the Sox getting to Shields.... and I see more of the same from Beckett.

Rays 8 - Sox 3

The Red Sox have momentum, Beckett will be on a short lease and hopefully Farrell is working on his mechanics (assuming it is not his oblique that is causing his change in pitching) to get his FB back into the 94-95 range instead of the 92-93 range. If they are lying about his injury then hopefully they have a strong plan B and change up his pitch selection so that he does not continue to throw just meatball heat.

Red Sox win 5-2

How many big games has James Shields pitched in???
None really. Those 6 months of AL East and postseason baseball was meaningless.
It would be pretty funny to have a nickname "Big Game" and not come through in the only big game he's ever pitched in
I'm sure he's staring at a wall as we speak pondering that.ETA: That's the advantage of being in the AL East...they've been playing in "big" games for months now...and he went 5-1 in August and Sept.Weird thing is he hadn't faced the Sox prior to the playoffs since June.

Dude...seriously?He's injured. Come on....

And the problem with his heater isn't 3 mph....it's because it has zero movement and he's having trouble hitting his spots.

I can hear what you're saying but I can't imagine being a fan of a team and being as pessimistic as you've been. Is being right more important than watching your team potentially bounce back and make it to the world series? I understand the Sox aren't healthy, Ortiz is blind, Beckett isn't right. But there's no denying the magic this team can bring to the field. Just look at recent history.They may lose. Odds are they will but I just don't understand burying now, after that win and watching them over the years.

If Shields is pitching even semi-well, I would be stunned if he doesn't go 8 or 9.

I just don't think Maddon pulls him for anything tonight.

I'll be surprised if Beckett doesn't give them at least a very reasonable start tonight.

I think it'll be a 5-3 game. Thing people forget is Upton and Evan can't hit like this non-stop. Rays are going þo need some hits from Navarro, Floyd and Gross/Rocco.

Gross is 1-15 in the series and his 3 defensive lapses in 6 (not diving for Pedroia's liner, crappy throw on Crisp hit, misjuding gamewinner) eliminate the defensive reasoning for putting him in. Put Perez in right field and let's cover as much ground as possible. Let him hit 9th and try to bunt every time he is up while Beckett is in there. He's a threat any time the ball is in play to get on base while Gross has one measly single in the entire series.

The wildcard is that Rays bullpen. There's GOT to be some serious self-doubt out there after a total meltdown on Thursday night. By the same token, you've got to wonder if the second-guessing of Maddon's moves might creep into his mind during Game 6. He made some real head-scratchers...

All the pressure is on the Rays, since you KNOW that they don't want any part of a Game 7 with the inevitable "choker" tag on the line. Teams tend to wilt in that situation.

Someone mentioned it but the Sox need a lead. If they get nothing in the 1st and the Rays put up a couple against Beckett, it will be a touch up hill climb.

Dude youre nuts if you don't think I'm glued to the set yelling my ### off every game. I may be realistic on here but my betting interest and my rooting interests arevery independent of each other. :goodposting:

re:Beckett

Asked if he had been forced to adjust because of his recent oblique injury, Beckett simply said, "No."

That was followed by the question, "Same guy, approaching things the same way?"

Beckett said, "Same."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"There's been some things he's fighting. Some of it is inconsistency because of work, and it was hard for him. But again, if you have to give the ball to somebody in Game 6, I can't imagine not being excited to give him the ball."
David Ortiz seemed to think so, citing Beckett's lackluster card-playing results on the team plane from Boston to St. Petersburg as evidence that the pitcher will be fine.
:unsure:
