***Official Golden Globes Thread*** (1 Viewer)

I had the good fortune of flipping onto that channel during Meryl Streep's speech.  She seems very reasonable and eloquent and I would like to subscribe to her newsletter.

Hey Hollywood, if you want us to take you or your messages seriously you have to do better than La La Land & Moonlight.

The great thing about Hollywood is these actors and actresses who claim to care about social issues like income distribution, but yet they happily take their $20 million dollar check while other actors and crew are starving.

Yeah, its pretty hard to take someone preaching about poverty seriously when they're wearing a $25,000 dress and half a million in jewelry.

These people just have absolutely no perspective. Guess comes from 30 years of  everyone telling you how perfect you are for 30 years just because you can perform in a film.

Not a Trump fan by any standard but I totally agree that Hollywood speaking out against him isn't helping.

I like Damon a lot, but yeah. Affleck  is way more suited for that kind of thing.

Fwiw, Casey's WTF episode from a few weeks ago is really good.
Yep I listened to that too. Just a cool, normal dude. Sign me up for anything he does in the future, I'm there.

Yep...I agreed with everything she said but I still cringed. It's not the time or place for a political statement. Even worse were the adoring looks from all of her peers, some of them teary eyed. These people think they are in a higher class of human being because they can act, it's so weird.

Not for nothing, but Trump himself is a "billionaire" who sits high atop a tower in NYC filled with gold everywhere and fancy furniture and is talking about looking out for people in middle America.

Oh, no question about it.  The whole situation is ridiculous.

I will say that trump is at least making a legitimate sacrifice to try and work on the problems.  No matter how you feel about trump, he's giving up a pretty stress free and great life in order to take the most important and stressful job on the planet.

Don't get me wrong...I think he's pretty darn awful. But at least he has put himself in a position to actually help these people he claims to care about. Most of these pampered actors do nothing but talk  (or maybe throw some money at the problem). Is Meryl going to make a legitimate life changing sacrifice to help anyone? (Maybe she is and I don't know it. Don't follow her charitable activities and don't have time to research at the moment)

.@KellyannePolls: I'm concerned that somebody with a platform like Meryl Streep's is inciting people's worst instincts.

Man that chick has some BIG brass ones. Makes bagdad bob look like a piker.

And our little boy president feels obligated to answer on Twitter.
Yeah,  this really doesn't help him. If he doesn't respond,  he almost sort of has the moral high ground  (against a bunch of actors that just come of whiney to someone like me).

But he just can't help himself.

Nothing screams president like no self control, GBA.

Back to the GG, most things that won I never heard of and everything I like lost.   No GOT love, no Mr Robot love, no WW love......... :kicksrock:

No Deadpool love too.

Streep has been a progressive for decades, and has monetarily backed and been an advocate for many causes such as equality for women, human rights, children (she co-founded Mothers and Others), the environment, poverty, healthcare, education, the arts, etc. Do I think she truly cares about helping people, yes. Do I think Trump truly cares about helping people, no. I think Trump cares about power and his brand. If an actress can get under his thin skin, just think what world leaders and enemies can do. I'm sure he'll tweet about it. For the record,I am not a democrat. I'm an independent.

so courageous of Streep to use her platform (and several other people's platforms, as noted earlier) to express the only view acceptable in her profession.  what an hero.

One from the "shut your mouth" squad. Can you please let us know what form of dissent is acceptable to you?

Everyone who publicly questions or criticizes him gets under his skin. The guy loses it over Saturday Night Live impressions. I've seen toddlers with fewer behavior problems.

I always wonder about whether awards shows are the right platforms for actors to air political views. Part of me believes it isn't but another part of me understands they aren't going to get a bigger platform to air their beliefs so I can understand why they do it. As you posted Streep is hardly some liberal tool. She's been advocate for equal rights and other causes throughout her career so I'm far less inclined to criticize her for what she said last night than many other actors who do the same.

this form of dissent is acceptable (aside from taking 5X the time you were allotted and torpedoing the schedule for everyone else), and I never said it wasn't.  what's not acceptable is acting like this is some courageous, heroic act.  it does not take guts to get up in front of a choir and preach.  this notion that Hollywood elites are somehow marginalized or outsiders is ridiculous at best, offensive and enraging at worst.

They typically give people who are getting a life time achievement award more time to speak so are we sure she took more then her allotted time and messed up the schedule for everyone else. If they were worried about her time they could have played the music clue to stop.

I don't like Meryl Streep a little bit and think it's kind of dopey when celebrities speak out like this for something as trivial as not liking the guy who was legally and righfully elected POTUS......but I do find it funny that those who criticized "snowflakes" for their need for safe spots need a safe spot from Meryl ####### Streep.

Streep in 2003 stood up and cheered for child rapist Roman Polanski at the Oscars. Polanski drugged and raped a 13 year old female,

Mark Wahlberg recently spoke with Task and Purpose, a publication aimed at veterans, about celebrities and politics. In his opinion, they should keep their mouths shut.

“A lot of celebrities did, do, and shouldn’t [talk about politics],” he said. “You know, it just goes to show you that people aren’t listening to that anyway. They might buy your CD or watch your movie, but we don’t put food on their table. We don’t pay their bills. Hollywood lives in a bubble. They’re out of touch with the common person, the everyday guy out there providing for their family.”

Well, that's kind of his job, or the job he was campaigning to get.

I youtubed the Streep speech and didnt hear anything particularly objectionable to it. Her personal & professional style is to reduce issues at hand to their personal basis and it seems she did little more than that. Maybe it didnt fit the context of the show and i know from tuning in after Sherlock (oy) everyone was having to hurry, but it didnt appear conspicuously indulgent.

Ali, Brown, Jabbar, who needs their opinions either and Lebron, you can #### too.   'Merica!

I agree with Marky Mark that most people don't give two chits what celebrities say politically because their words have no direct bearing on our lives whatsoever. It's funny, though, how the country's next President cares so much.

Funny in a sad and pathetic way.

I've said it a million times, not sure why anyone cares what actors/athletes/celebrities think about politics.  I like when they use their influence for specific causes (cancer, animal rights, etc) but I don't care what they think about candidates, good, bad, or otherwise.

I may have overestimated how much she messed up the schedule. It did seem rushed for a time after her speech, but probably not as bad as I made it seem.

I'm guessing they didn't play the music so as not to be tacky and interrupt her given the serious subject matter.

This thread is exactly why they should just ####. No one cases. People watch tv/movies and shows like this to distract themselves from the nonsense of the world.

I'm pretty conservative and I don't have a problem with Streep's speech.  I don't agree with all of her stances, but I'm fine with her using that platform to say what she wants.

Trump is a pretty awful dude and we should expect to see a continual stream of criticism toward him from left leaning institutions.  Hopefully it will embolden some of Congress to keep him in check, because his cabinet won't.

Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him.....

"groveling" when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!

Now you want the orchestra members cars to be vandalized?

" Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood..." Perhaps the most outlandish thing he's ever said and he's said some whoppers. Might as well call Michael Jordan overrated.

He can't even retort intelligently. Everything is hyper-emotional and has no foundation in truth. A junior high school debate team would eat him alive.

turn off the tv when she comes on

don't watch her movies

don't post in threads that talk about her speech

Might be a good starter kit.
