Official Great Works Draft (2 Viewers)

' said:
just to get an idea how ridiculous attempting to judge the greatest novels of all time is, just have a look at these completely differing lists compiled by "experts"

Observer

Modern Library

BBC's Big Read
Those are some awesome lists. The one that lists Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as the #5 best novel is MONEY. There's nothing like a phone vote to determine the world's greatest achievements.
What a crock. Everyone knows that Order of the Phoenix is the best Harry Potter book, I've lost all my faith in self selected public opinion polls now.
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Damn it, I wish you'd been in this draft.

Songs - 17 Points

Johnny B. Goode - Chucky manages to rip-off Johnnie Johnson, T-Bone Walker and Louis Jordan in one fell swoop, thus taking the thievery of Elvis, Bill Haley, et al. to a new level and setting the gold standard for rock 'n roll.

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Poor Mick Jagger. He just can't get laid. This of course, was before he was rolliin' in it (to quote John Madden - winning is a great deodorant). Keith Richards comes up with the perfect 3-note rock riff. It comes to him while he's asleep. He wakes up and sings it into a tape recorder so he won't forget it. How could you forget a 3 note riff?!? gb kr. (On a side note: McCartney did the same thing with Yesterday, which when combined with Keif's efforts, planted the seed for one of the greatest revolutions in entertainment. The bed-side recording. I've heard that there are now a myriad of websites dedicated to these type of efforts.)

Take the "A" Train - Not enough people appreciate the greatness of Duke Ellington. Go. Wiki. Google. Read. Listen. This was his signature tune. Of course the great irony is that he wrote 1000's of songs. But not this one (Billy Strayhorn).

I'm heading out here shortly and will be away from a computer until later on tomorrow night. As such, I won't be able to add any new rankings to the site that are posted here nor give standings updates. TTY all later.

Could I get the updated list of who loves and hates each other here? My notebook is down. All it says is El Floppo = enemy.

As far as I know, we don't own the Bloom book. There are a lot of books around here, though; maybe I've missed it.
Meh, you both mentioned it, you're married, I made the connection. The Western Cannon is a widely read (and owned) book. Coincidences happen.
Bit surprised by the Postradamus meltdown.
I'm not. Come now Krista, you're well aware of my internet superpowers. I'll admit I barely understand them myself, yet I possess the incredible ability to provoke total meltdowns of vitriolic hate when I don't even mean to. Some say it's my good looks. Others say it's my innate sense of timing. Personally, I think it's my people skills. I'm so god damm suave (feel free to hear the last three words in the voice of Frank Booth) that the wannabes meltdown when I call them on their crap. Rejected, they explode into ranting. It's my lot in life. I'm a victim of my own complex superiority (feel free to invert the last two words).

I'm not sure, but I've managed to steal the Official FFA Draft Villain title from Larry_Boy and Misfitblondes. By my count, I've managed to provoke 2 total meltdowns, 1 i-suicide threat, 1 attempted slapfight, drew out an alias pile-on, was invited onto 2 teams, tentatively made both and worked my way off each. One former partner hates me, the other probably doesn't care. And I did it all without getting a single time-out.

How can I not be proud of that?

Anyhow, update your notebook accordingly. My name is flysack. People hate me.

Ah crap, I was wrong. We do own it. I knew we'd both read it but forgot it was on the shelves. :bag: Do you have a newsletter on internet superpowers to which I could subscribe?

Yes. There's a sign-up website somewhere but I can't remember the address...I'll get back to you. I know it's in my bookmarks somewhere.

Blood Meridian is one of maybe 4 novels published in the last 2 decades that Harold Bloom includes in the Cannon of Western Literature. It is certainly better than anything Stephen King ever wrote. It is an awesome work, and by awesome I mean that it inspires actual awe. Give it 25 points.
You have to be Krista's hubby right? That Bloom book must be bedside material. :)Just messing around. I have a copy of Bloom's pronouncements on my shelf too. Every once in awhile I amuse myself with its tidy lists. He has several Delillo novels there and would clearly suck Pynchon's knob if Tommy ever showed up at NYU. So I'm more with Bloom than against him.

Krista, I had no intention of rubbing you the wrong way (bow chika wow wow) but honestly, though I hate to admit it, the remark you made really got me. It's as if you felt that by one simple ranking the rest of my efforts weren't even worth a look. I put hours into that garbage, and for you to simply write me off like that surprised me especially since I feel you are a good person and I respect your opinions. No hard feelings from me.

Songs - 18 Points

Over the Rainbow - Glad to see Israel Kamakawiwo'ole get some love. Also, if not the inspiration, this song at least shares a common theme with a certain 70's album cover, serving as yet another cosmic link for the greatest mixed media mash-up since the invention of the hash pipe.

Summertime - A couple of Jewish brothers (siblings that is, as opposed to Sammy Davis Jr. and Lenny Kravitz) pen an African American folk song (i.e. Negro spiritual) based on a Ukranian lullaby. The result is one of the most important and endearing songs ever written. At last count, it had been recorded by eight million, three hundred ninety six thousand, four hundred forty two and a half artists.

White Christmas - White Christmas is a sweet dessert dish made from the combination of Copha, icing sugar, sultanas, glazed [bing] cherries, dried apricots, desiccated coconut, milk powder and rice bubbles. It is cooked in a deep pan, and cut into slices for eating. It's well known in Australia, less so elsewhere.

youtube blocked at work :blackdot:

Damn, I am not going to be able to catch Genedoc/Bonzai. Unless there is some sort of miracle with inventions, buildings, and technology, I may have to settle for 2nd place (or 3rd place if UH catches me.)

So did I kill it with my novels? Saw the rankings are in... Did I win?

To Kill a Mockingbird as a 20 pointer is absurd.
