Official Great Works Draft (6 Viewers)

Songs - 2 Points

Atmosphere - Tried to be objective here, but I never liked Joy Division (I'm sure this will successfully disembowel me of any remaining iota of coolness factor that I might have managed to cling to in here - meh). To be honest, I had never heard this song before and I gave 'er a listen. Was okay, but pretty ordinary and reminded me why I never like Joy Division. Were they pioneers? Yes. Were they groundbreakers? Yes. Did they pave the way for all the moan and drone™ bands I despised in the 80's? Yes. Yes. Yes.

Purple Rain - Was way into this album when it came out. Unfortunately, there are at least 1/2 dozen cuts off the album that are better than the title track.

Red House - Another illustration of why I probably should have added some credence to performance. Remove that though, and you get Hendrix's approximately 43rd best song.

I'm not a fan of Joy Division either, though there was something strangely melodic about "Love Will Tear Us Apart." There's a British folk group called Oysterband which takes that song and really fleshes out the melody in a marvelous live acoustic version.

New Order wasn't much better, though "Blue Monday" is probably one of the great dance songs of all time, and "Love Vigilantes" remains a great antiwar tune.

I say let 'em fly MfB. Been about an hour and a half since UH posted the 2 pointers.

Ohio - Was probably too harsh on the 2-pointers. They're all good songs (okay, I still hate Joy Division). Reason I bring it up is that I like Ohio. This just re-illustrates how ridiculous this category is to judge :wah: Very emotional song. Seems like I should give it's historical significance more weight than I am doing. Don't know what to say. Tough category and I much prefer Long Time Gone. Caveat emptor (aka: cya [m-o-u-s-e]) - all the songs from here on out deserve a higher ranking than I am giving them. Hmmm. Might have to pull a Spinal Tap (criminally under-represented in this draft) and just move the scale up. "Ours goes to 30!"

Smoke on the Water - Way iconic riff. Maybe the most. Can't think of the song without thinking of Beavis and Butthead though. Major negative points.

Welcome to the Jungle - Another song I actually really like. You say it's not high enough? Welcome to the Jungle indeed . . .

eta-> Okay. Weak writeup. Let me add that Welcome got major bonus points for being the anti-moan & drone™. Unfortunately, the same number of points were deducted due to GnR's get-up being too similar to my 2nd most despised 80's genre - hair metal.

I have the Compositions ready to post. Should I wait for UH to finish his or let 'em fly?
My rankings are going to be the Gonorrhea of the draft (coming out at a slow trickle).Go for it.

Just a note: If Stars & Stripes Forever had been picked in the song category, it would have got a 20, I mean, a 30 . . .

Just to be clear...these three were already ranked as 20s by wikkid earlier in the draft and I agree they are all worthy of 20s so that is where they shall remain.
I think you did a bang up job.

Selfishly, I'd like to see The Moonlight Sonata ranked higher. However, I can't really name anything above it that it should definitely be ranked higher than. Nice job here, MfB.

Will Krista be ranking MfB's three compositions?

Carmina Burana - Carl Orff

Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd

Romeo and Juliet - Tchaikovsky

Songs - 4 Points

Hallelujah - More fess up time. Only became aware of this version over the last few years (muchas gracias nerdosos musicos de FFA!!!) Fantastic cover, cept, I still like the original better :excited: LC, and, okay, this won't make me any more popular around here (it's not like I got a lot to lose), but I'll say it, death can sometimes be a great career move . . .

Oh Pretty Woman - This one takes over the spot as song I most would have liked to give a higher ranking to. No one could top Royo's tiger growl (mer-say), but this song is so good, that polar opposite takes on it are both deliciously awesome (Van Halen & Al Green).

Wish You Were Here - I used to be a pretty big fan of Pink Floyd (back when I had the time and ability to get stoned and listen to entire albums with headphones, uninterrupted, and forget not minding it, actually actively sought to explore the dark side of the unc). The key point here is that most of Pink Floyd's greater works needs to be appreciated in the context of their entirety. This is a great song. But is even better in the context of the entire album.

The Alphabet Song - Makes the list due to ubiquity (who cares if it's a Wolfgang rip-off. [Has anyone ever had a cooler middle name? Only one that comes to mind would be my avatar (look it up)]) I mean, who hasn't sang this song at some time in their lives.? Let's see a show of hands of all the English speakers on the planet who have never sung this song. Tides? Okay. One.

Minnie the Moocher - Cool enough song to be included in The Blues Brothers movie. Fairly iconic, but not one of the truly greats. Actually, it's also a rip-off (Willie the Weeper). It does get bonus points though for being a 1931 million seller rolled with references to ug-drays.

No Woman, No Cry - Move over Pretty Woman. Pains me to not rank this higher mon, but I and I think there are better, and (arguably) more important Marley songs. Even so, my favorite song ranked so far.

Al Green covers are a thing of beauty (see also: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, The Letter, I Can't Get Next To You, My Girl, I Wanna Hold Your Hand etc).

 My personal favorite is For The Good Times (Kris Kristofferson).

One of the greatest freaking break-up songs of all time.

I love Minnie the Moocher. Years ago, I saw Cab Calloway live at the Hollywood Bowl (opening for a film there.) He was in his late 80's, but he still had it. But what's really cool, at least to me, is that the song was used for the sound track for a great early very advant garde Betty Boop cartoon by Max Fleischer:

Big Bad Voodoo Daddies do a nice cover, as well.

Lili Marlene - This is the other song drafted that I had not heard before (I get to mention Joy Divison again! YEAH!!!) After reading up on it, I'm kinda surprised I haven't. (Then again, dad sat out WWII with a hernia, so wtf do I know). eta -> After giving the German version by Marlene Dietrich a listen, turns out I HAVE heard it before. Just didn't know what it was. He likes it! Hey Mikey! I'm at the point of my music explorations where old-time songs from foreign countries are really freakin' cool. Turn up that Luna Mezzo Mare sheet and pass the fiber. Whoopie!

Moanin' - LOVE. THIS. SONG. It is one of my favorite jazz standards, as has been mentioned numerous times in assorted and sundry music threads over the last few years. It's not quite iconic enough (have I set a record yet for use of that word in my rankings) to get a higher placing though. This is getting tough.

Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing) - Okay. I'll try and be honest. I probably haven't given this song the credit it deserves. As far as swing era songs go, it's probably one of the most, let's say it all together, iconic. (But wtf, so are a lot of light weight pop songs - not that this is light weight, cause it does have a certain edge to it, in no small part due to a certain master of the traps). Gene Krupa and the Louis Prima connection aside, I'll take The Count's One O'Clock Jump, or anything by Louis Jordan (not to mention the Duke) over it in a drumbeat.

Real Funny, huh??I would have thought that a song which.........................

Has been learned and sung by countless millions, maybe billions

Is still remembered by those Billions

Influenced and helped those Billions learn

Deserves far better than a bottom 1/4 ranking

An out of the Box pick, which raks of brilliance, deserves justice

Chill out there, GB. It wasn't the ranking that was funny it was the comment at the end. Geez, enough is enough. Take it down a notch.

 I don't know what I was thinking.

This is definitely the most brilliant pick of the draft.

I give it a score of eleventy-five bajillion.

Seriously, I actually think you ranked The Alphabet Song far too high; it deserves a 1, IMO. This draft is supposed to be about the greatest human achievements. This category is designed to be a compilation of the greatest achievements in popular music, in the form of the popular song. The Alphabet Song is the least sophisticated song drafted, in terms of melody and lyrics. It has no depth or real musicality. Not trying to rip on Tides of War here; I just think that nearly every other song drafted is about a thousand times more of an achievement.
