Sounds good. I like the trip hop vibe. Adding just a little reverb to the drums might brighten it up just a little.
Thanks, and thanks for listening. Nice call on adding reverb to the drums. I went in and bumped it up a a bit, whuch made a nice subtle improvement.

This is why I appreciate feedback so much. A fresh set of ears will hear things differently.

:hifive:

The reverb comment is only a matter of opinion, obviously. There are plenty of trip hop songs that purposely tone down the reverb on the drums.

GOING DIGITAL

Well it looks like the day has come.  After decades of boutique amps and chasing tone, the guitarists in the band are going digital.  Our two main axe-men are now using Kempers, and I'm on the hunt to adopt a less costly option.  Provided you can find the tone you want, going direct into the board at a live show is just so much easier and gives you much more control over your sound when compared to mic'ing an amplifier on stage.  You have less to deal with in terms of stage volume (no amps interfering with your monitor mix), you don't have to worry about mic quality and placement, and you don't have to haul a heavy rig to the show.  And now that we're getting a PA so we can play smaller private shows, we need to get lean in terms of our gear.

Make no mistake, after years of tube tone snobbery, technology has finally caught up.  The tone on some of these digital solutions is simply amazing.  I'm pretty sure I linked some stuff about the Kemper a couple years ago upthread when it was first entering the market.  This thing is just amazing.  You can record the tones from your favorite amp and it will recreate them perfectly.  But let's say you don't own a bunch of expensive boutique amps (who does?).  There are people out there who have created amazing profiles for those amps that you can purchase for a few bucks and load onto the Kemper.

Side by Side Tone King Comparison

Developing VOX AC30 Profiles

Now Kempers are pretty pricey at around $2500, but the fact that you can emulate pretty much every high-end boutique amp out there is what provides value.  Our two primary guitarists have used the Kempers at our last couple shows and the results have been amazing.  As mentioned above, I'll be going with a less costly option as a rhythm guitarist.  Something like the Atomic Amplifire .

HNGD!  (maybe belated)

What did you get?  Pics?!?
Almost    I got out of there.  I need to be better at this.  Lessons continue to go well, and I LOVE that I'm finally able to work barre chords in without looking like a total dweeb.  So much fun to sing and play.

Tabs app is great, almost ready to go to something like sixstringcountry.com and pay real $

Dammit!  I misread. Keep us posted on the lessons and the search.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, when it comes to acoustic guitars, I really do recommend playing before you buy. You'll be surprised at how tone can vary even between same model guitars. I'd also be open to purchasing used if there is a good music store around that carries highe end used acoustics. You can save a few bucks and they often sound better with the wood having aged.

Good luck!

For sure.  ?

By the way, I've had lots of posts over the years in this thread about rigs, amps and tone. But as mentioned in my post above from February, we went fully digital for the first time at our most recent show. Bass player went direct to PA, our two lead guitarists went direct with Kemper powered units (https://www.kemper-amps.com/) and I went direct with an Atomic Amplifire using some killer after market profiles (http://atomicamps.com/amplifire-pedal/).

Still dialing things in, but the sound was good, we had more control over stage volume, and it was really nice to cut the weight of our gear in half for load in.

Still have my Orange and Blackstar combos, but ended up selling my Marshall rig. Just don't need it anymore.

Thanks. I thought the shape of the case would give it away. We're both in love with it, and she's a girl, who just graduated middle school, with a music award, while having a birthday. I'm pretty sure it's her SG and my Strat clone but that discussion hasn't gone beyond her asking to take it to her next lesson.

In the SG excitement, I almost forgot what I came here to post about. I have a 20x8' room attached to the back of my garage with a door leading to the backyard. Since my mom moved in, it has been storage stuffed with her stuff. Well, mice got in there and did some verminy damage, poop everywhere stuff so I emptied it sterilized everything, moved her stuff to a real storage facility (took apart the old Mahogany dresser) etc. My musician daughter said, wouldn't it be cool if we fixed this up for my keyboards and had a bunch of guitars hanging on the walls...

Well, I need things to do, so with her promising to take both her piano and guitar lessons very seriously all summer, I started prepping and priming.

The room.

Look a gd mouse hole.

Ideas for the space?
Did you ever finish out this space?

A couple months ago, we finally got tired of our cluttered rehearsal space with dingy white walls and crappy fluorescent lights and decided to give it a makeover.  This is the finished product.

I did and it was great for a year+ when a family member needed a place to crash and a bed went in there. Piano, Korg, a few guitars amps etc moved into a much larger space, but not a dedicated music room. More like a family/game/entertainment room. I LOVE what you've done with the place.

Surprisingly fun to play on guitar, Stairway to Heaven.   Never been a big fan of Zep, but liked the way it sounded so grabbed the chords tab.  ?

Just bought an American Standard Telecaster.. One of those bucket list things- always wanted a real Tele.  Fender has discontinued the AS,  so with case I paid a little under a grand-

after 30+ years of playing acoustic, I find myself struggling at times playing on much lighter strings.. I fret like a savage- so this gives me a chance to relearn some technique

I love the tone I can get out of this guitar

You are now officially a guitar player!  Note of caution:  Do not play Stairway to Heaven if you are testing out a guitar at Guitar Center or <insert guitar store of your choice>.  Play anything but that.  But no doubt, it's a great tune to play on the guitar and a rite of passage.

Caution:  Hippling in progress

It's an air conditioner with a vent into the ceiling.  The building's air conditioners are sub-par so we rigged our own.  Kinda ruins the clean lines of the practice space.
I figured.

Space looks sweet, though, regardless of the ductwork.

UPDATE: the mini Orange amp works pretty well with the Telecaster......not so much with the Epiphone acoustic/electric.  Also, my 10 year old was downstairs with me...and I said "I'm gonna see if changing the amp cord really does make the sound better."  Swapped out my "whatever" cord I bought when I first bought a cheap amp and cable for the Tele, and put in the Monster brand cable I bought when I bought my Acoustic amp....

HFS!!  10 year old stands up immediately and says "whoa, dad, that sounds WAYYY better"

I may need to stop being a tight ### with cables/amps.  If I could have a whopper month here in the next 6, I'm going to buy a Martin or a Gibson acoustic/electric too.

there was a dude in GC this last week playing on their pedal demo station....JFC could this guy play.  Nothing I recognized, which was even more impressive, but he was burning the ####### building down.

I only play in the acoustic room, and I bang out vocals too.  Mostly country, so I doubt anyone knows wtf I'm doing.

Teles are so sweet.  Make sure to post a vid at some point!

Okay, so after 7 years of gigging clubs and outdoor festivals, we played our first house party this past weekend.  It's been something we've been wanting to do for a while.  The guys in the band generously agreed to donate a "private concert" for the live auction at our last Chance for Hope fundraising event.  The competition was fierce, and we ended up awarding the prize to the top two bidders.  So the first of our incredibly generous winners had a house party this past Saturday.  Loads of fun.  We played all sorts of stuff we've never played before.

One of the things we decided to do was play a couple Foo Fighter tunes with a drummer who had been invited to the party (the guy is really good).  This is the kind of impromptu stuff you can do at a house party, but not a paid show.  It was a risk - we had never played the song before and just came up with the idea a few days before the show.  Everyone learned their parts on their own and we played it together for the first time at the party.  I'm not talented enough on guitar to pull off something like this in just a couple days, so I only sang on these tunes.  Here's a video of one of them (in portrait mode, alas).  If you watch it, please consider playing it through speakers or headphones - the tiny phone speakers won't do the drums justice.

what a great tune.   You sang a little lower than Grohl....preference or range complications?

Ha, that's pretty funny.  Back in the late 90s, I was part of a coffee shop acoustic group and we probably did 6 or 8 BNL songs.  The name of our little ensemble was even vaguely BNL-ish - Boathouse Hockey.  I guess it stuck.

As a piece of trivia, the guy playing drums with us is the drum tech for Alex Van Halen.

What do you use to get the chords?  App or book?

GL with the Gibson.
App.  Ultimate Guitar Tabs app.   I'm not even good enough for really playing the song, but with the chords, I can fake it pretty well.  Thanks on the GL....I'm really just in a search for an acoustic that feels CRAZY good in my hands.  Someday, it'll happen, and I'll just pull the trigger.  That's something I've never struggled with...saying yes.

I think Gibson acoustics are incredibly beautiful guitars, and I've wanted one for a long time. But friends in the music biz assure me they are behind Taylor and Martin in terms of tone. Between Taylor and Martin, I think Martin has the superior tone generally while Taylors win hands down in terms of playability. If you find a Martin that is easy to play, or a Taylor that has a slightly warmer tone, I think that's the ticket. My two cents.

That's actually where I stand re: Martin is top of list.   There are even two at the GC I go to that are almost perfect.   The only reason I haven't yet is simply that I want MORE guitars in my hands so I can confirm it.   I have a baby Taylor, and the sound that comes out of it is astounding, but the higher end Taylor's I've played...well, not as good as the Gibsons.  I seem to recall reading some NOT so great things about Gibsons tho.

Budget?

funny too, is that a friend GAVE me a Martin D-15 Koa...and I can't seem to fall in love with it.  Never play it.  My 10 year old, Joe, plays the Baby now, so I end up with the Epiphone I bought...and I love it.  If I didn't love it as much as I do, I probably would have already bought a Martin.   I do know that I'll probably never get rid of a guitar...

Anyone played one of these?  They had one behind the glass...I didn't ask them to dig it out.

I think prices on high end acoustics have come down a ton in the last few years.  I'm not really in the market right now but that's the sense I get from reading some of the guitar pages.

I may circle back to the older guy with the high end Brazilian Collings and see if he's willing to deal now.

not really a "budget" guy, for which I am thankful....
well, let me suggest a Martin 000-18 GE..  most versitile acoustic IMO-  Adi spruce top can be strummed hard and has a wider fretboard for very comfy playing (I have big hands)..

If you need a dread, then the Martin Standards are hard to beat--  D-18, D-28, HD-28 ect...

800 Taylor Series are very nice, but are not quite as warm and woody as a Martin.

If budget is truly not an issue- Collings!

Thanks Chet!  If you ever need a band for a party, we're for hire!  (Please note that our rider requires that you send your private jet to pick us up.)

No PJ for me.  Maybe a Netjets share or a Marquis card but I will get out far before I ever get into a position to buy an 8-fig plane.

I think I would drive to Chicago to see this.

You will be on the list if it ever happens, but I'd suggest you shoot the lock off your wallet and buy a plane ticket instead.
