***OFFICIAL*** Guitar Guys Thread -- all axes, all the time (1 Viewer)

The color is gorgeous. Just give it a finish and be done with it.
Not sure what my camera did there, but the color is misleading, still unfinished white hickory. Maybe yellow-gold is the way to go though!

I have decision paralysis on pots and pickups. I'm so novice I don't want to screw this up, but everything to finish it will be ordered today. I've spent an hour or so reading wiring diagrams this morning. I've wanted an SHH Tele all along to preserve the vintage bridge look and have a little something extra, but there's almost no info out there on them. This morning I found this 14 year old kid who built one and had it played at a Petty concert. Pretty cool read.
That is a great story. Campbell is awesome.
Video of this on the Petty Website. Fantastic story. And the kid handled himself better than I would in Campbell's company, and I'm a grown ### man.

While I lately haven't found time to add much to . . . well, ANY thread in the FFA . . . I just wanted to say that this thread in particular is an absolute inspiration. CC & BB: your guitars are each gorgeous and I hope we get in-concert pics and/or vids of you rockin' 'em sometime soon. For the last couple of years, I've been giving serious thought to taking a few classes here. Scheduling hasn't permitted yet, but this thread really makes me want to sign up for the winter. Or start stockpiling parts in the meantime. Hell, after playing for 26 years, it's about time I at least learned how to do my own setups . . .

Keep up the great work, people.

I've opted to use this thread to inventory my gear. Don't ever delete it, O.

In the pedal listing above, the three starred items are things I don't use anymore. The DS-1 is at least 15 years old, but still in good working condition. The Power Stack pedal is in mint condition. Sweet pedal, but just not quite as good as the overdrive on my tube amps, so it doesn't have a role in my rig. The Behringer DI/preamp is good if you're amplifying an acoustic, but it duplicates my LR Baggs. If any of you guitar guys who have been contributing to the thread have a use for one of them, let me know and I'll pop them in the mail to you. First to post gets it, but offer only open to past posters in this thread. Guitar Guys unite!

BB, if nobody else wants it, I'd love to try out the Power Stack pedal.

I also buy pedals from time to time on CL, so next time I recycle I will pay it forward in here.

It's yours. Just PM me your address and I'll drop it in the mail this week. I like the excess gear pay it forward idea.

PS, that is an extremely impressive list.
It's been a lifetime of collecting. But other than perhaps a couple items, this is a fairly pedestrian gear collection. A buddy of mine has a '55 Les Paul Goldtop which is worth more than every piece of gear I own combined.

Awesome! Thanks for posting the step by step photos. Very interesting. How are you doing the burst?

Thanks. The holes aren't perfect, but the bridge will cover a minor flaw on top and installing ferrules in the back should give me a chance to make it look perfect. A drill press is really the way to go, but there's something about this first build that makes me want to do it the hard way.

There must be 2 dozen youtube how tos on doing a burst. I'm trying different methods on both sides. The one in the pic is good quality hunter green acrylic high gloss with drops of blue food coloring (haha) to get my own custom shade of teal. I used a rag dipped in paint and rubbed three thin coats into the edge about 10 minutes apart. It's so hot and dry here the paint was drying on contact. I did this in the garage about 2am. With each coat I moved a little further into the body trying to create a fade. I then sanded it into what you see in the pic. There were some unsightly edges prior to sanding. Because this is a learning experience, I'm going to try three tone bursting the back before moving to the front. Tonight I'll fade a lighter teal towards the center, and probably a bright yellow green for the center burst effect. This method works from the outside in, and I like it for hand rubbing.

The decision to finish it this way was partly dictated by a glue stain running along the edge of this body. It is two slices of an oak table leaf pancaked together. I can't hide the seam where the glue was pressed. A translucent dye or stain would show it. So I needed paint to cover that. For me the burst is preserving the remaining wood grain.

The other side is being done center first.

I'd have to add on a room.
By the way, isn't this precisely what you're doing? We have an extra bedroom that I took over to store all my music stuff. With my younger son finally getting a drum kit, the two boys and I worked on the room this past weekend. It's gone from my music storage room to our brand new rehearsal studio! It's not soundproofed, however.

Well, not precisely. I'm trying to keep 14 year old strathead and 87 year old chemobrain happy at the same time. My gear collection fits in a broom closet and mostly belongs to the 14 year old. Very cool that you guys have your own dedicated music space. I did run AC into the room but other than covering the walls and doors with heavy blankets, no further soundproofing or room enhancing has been done. Just too hot for that kind of work and we kind of like it in there for now.

I added the green and yellow dyes to get the burst look. It reminds me too much of the Packers.

By the way, I can't get over how fun these Baby Taylor guitars are. It plays like butter -- so easy and fun to play. I guess it's the short scale and the nut width, but it's just such a pleasure to play. Sounds great for what it is. Has to be the best $150 you can spend on a used guitar. Anyone looking for a great little acoustic, I encourage you to check one out. I'm really considering picking up one of the limited edition versions too (rosewood, koa, maybe others?)

So sweet.
Did you buy it used at that price? Have been thinking about getting an acoustic for my 13-year-old and that might be just the ticket.
Yup, used price. They're small. You can pick them on on Ebay.

There are a couple sizes up that may be better as starter guitars -- this thing is really small, like ukelele big. There's a Big Baby and I think a Mini GS. Both relatively in expensive guitars, and if the Baby is any indication, I bet they sound and play great.

Ah, I didn't realize they were that small. Maybe the GS Mini is the way to go, but they look like they go for around $400 used, which is more than I want to spend.Have you been able to get your big Taylor more to your liking?

Okay, I can't resist. My two boys were messing around this past weekend and I took a video of them doing a modified version of Sunshine of Your Love. They are very much beginners, so I'm posting this more for fun than for constructive feedback or anything. My youngest just turned 11 and this was only his second day on a real kit. Just thought it might give you guys a little smile.

Actually, decided to list it on AGF for trade. Have a few feelers out already for some smaller guitars offered in trades that will likely fit the bill for me better. One is a small mahogany parlor guitar by Santa Cruz that has gotten incredible reviews. Supposed to hear back from the guy this afternoon. I'm super psyched about it, we'll see...

And of course, last night I sat drunk on eBay and started making lowball offers on a couple of guitars. I woke up this morning and one had been accepted. :bag: Wife> hi

It's a stunning Taylor of the type I've wanted for a while -- a sinker redwood type (which is super rare, and Taylor is now officially out of) and amazon rosewood back and sides. It's one of the built to order guitars from the Taylor road show.

:bag:

So, so, so awesome.

Can't wait till my kids are this age. Great that you got them started young, and an awesome thing to do as a family.

Great stuff, BB.

What are those little electronic units in front of each of them, with the displays?

(Jesus you have a lot of gear)

Really awesome stuff here, BB. They sound great... definitely better than the "beginner" label you gave them. You should be really proud.

The one on the kit is the brain for the Roland V-Drums. The one on the mic stand by my son playing the guitar is a Bose T1 four-channel mixer (the drums and the mic are going through it into a Bose PA - the tall skinny thing in the corner).

 great stuff there. I have the most fun when I jam along with my son (he's a wiz on the piano/keyboards). Truly cherished moments.

Holy shot I want to be your son!!!!

This is by far turning into my favorite thread.

Very inspiring to see stuff like BBs video, the guitar builds, etc.

I have a little son now and really only in last couple years have I started playing guitar with my dad. Really makes me wish I started earlier and also makes me think about when my boy is older how much I would love to do stuff like that with him. I think I've told some that my dad is having health problems so mortality is a bit more on my mind lately, but seeing this stuff really strikes a chord with me.

Great stuff in here.

Absolutely my favorite thread. I'm vacationing on the east coast for ten days starting tonight, and I try to use these summer trips to stay away from the internet, so you guys play nice while I'm gone.

I feel like a dope for not getting actively involved in my daughter's musical efforts years ago. I have consistently encouraged her, paid for lessons, camp, whatever; and been happy to teach/share what I know about the topic (I am great at listening to music and that's it... haha). She's had piano/keyboard lessons or classes for 8 years now.

Now with this guitar obsession and me trying to learn with her, we're having more father daughter fun than just about anything since she was bouncing on my knee. We worked on Pipeline together for a couple hours last night. Hard to explain, but you know how teens hit a stage where it's uncool to do things with parents... sort of? Whatever. I felt that awkward stuff a little last school year, but not now. Blessed.

Also BB, she wants to play with your boys. She really got a kick out that vid.

Here's the new Taylor, came in today:

The sound is more like what I like -- I think it's the rosewood back and sides. Has a deeper, punchier sound. Could use a setup, the action is slightly higher than my tastes, but otherwise love it.

It's a sinker redwood top. Sinker are redwoods that were felled and left under water for many years, absorbing the nutrients from the river. Taylor is reportedly completely out of this wood -- makes these even harder to find and more unique.

The back and sides are Amazon rosewood. Looks and sounds great. Probably not quite a match for brazilian rosewood, but better than the east indian counterpart.

This was supposedly a custom guitar from Taylor's road show.

Overall, very unique and great sounding guitar. Very psyched.

As to the Walnut Taylor, rather than return it, I've found some trading partners on Acoustic Guitar Forum (AGF) -- my new favorite forum other than this one. Very close to a trade for a Santa Cruz 1929 OOM mahogany parlor guitar -- classic 1920's style guitar and very different from the Taylors I've been playing. Perfect for my quiet playing in my living room at night, which is pretty much all I do. Very curious and interested, we'll see if the trade pans out. Overall it's a great forum for swapping gear, I've had some good experiences there.

By the way BB, I've been keeping an eye out for acoustics for your son at AGF. It's a great place to research and buy used guitars from trustworthy guitar guys at a fair price. Highly recommend.

That guitar is freaking gorgeous. Green with envy here. GREEN! And it's a cutaway! Very nice. Will definitely have to check out AGF, but I worry that my acoustic IQ is not up to snuff. All the sinker rosewood talk is Greek to me.

Thanks for keeping an eye out. Given the money I shelled out on the build and the drum kit, I'm not looking to spend more than a couple hundred. Need to give my wallet a rest. And I'm not in a hurry at all - can definitely wait until the right deal comes along.

I liked that video you posted earlier. You need to get some video of you and your dad playing together if possible. Great moment to capture.

That's awesome that you've found something to bring you and your daughter even closer together. If only our kids would never grow up! As for playing together, I wish my boys practiced as much as your daughter does on a daily basis!

Can't wait till my daughter is a little older. Totally getting her into music. And the other kids too.

Sweet... I have that same Drum kit - got my 5 year old on it kinda keeping a Beat and that alone gave me goose bumps to play along with...

Cool! How do you like it?

Speaking of pedals, does anyone know a site that would give some suggestions on how to order and adjust the pedals you have to get unique sounds?

I have a few, and have bought and sold some in the past, but really have no real clue what I'm doing and I usually only turn on one at a time because I don't know really how to play them off each other without sounding like crap.

I'm not a big pedal chain guy, but here's an article that talks about pedal sequencing that might be helpful to you: http://www.bossus.com/boss_users_group/article.php?ArticleId=1322

Excellent, I see they even have "the Bigbottom" listed.

Do you just use a single effect when you play? Just the amp?

I'm a low profile rhythm guitar player in the outfits I play with. So my goal is to find a nice tone and stick with it while the other players handle the primary guitar work. 90% of the time I only use the overdrive on my Orange or Marshall amp. The other pedals I use in my rig are a Super Chorus and a Big Muff (for stuff like Black Keys). And my Marshall has serviceable on board reverb which I use for a couple tunes. By the way, here's a good video on the Power Stack to give you an idea of how you can use it: http://youtu.be/Fg5HLdYBskM

I received a box in the mail today and sure enough, its a Power Stack pedal!

I can't wait to try it tonight, I think it's going to fit perfectly on my pedalboard, because it even has bigbottom's Velcro on it!!!

Thank you so much for sending it. That is really awesome and I hope I can repay the favor somehow.

Ok I recorded a crummy video with my phone of my crummy guitar playing. Here comes the interesting part where I must upload it to YouTube. Pray for me.

Never realized how many stupid faces I make when playing the guitar. At least I hope it's just when I'm playing guitar.

Oh, also forgot what chords I was playing for a second.
