***OFFICIAL*** Guitar Guys Thread -- all axes, all the time (1 Viewer)

I bought a Kemper a couple of weeks ago. Sounds awesome through headphones, but not so good through my guitar cabinets. Anyone have experience or can recommend some kind of FRFR system?
What kind of cab are you using?  You can’t use a standard guitar cab with a Kemper.

Edit:  I see from your question that you already know this. Both of the main guitarists in my band use Kempers, but they play direct through our PA and stage monitors for our practices and through the House PA and monitors for our live performances. We use these for our rehearsal room stage monitors and they work quite well with the Kemper:

I know that one of our guitar players bought two high end FRFR speakers and installed them into a vintage 80s-era Marshall cabinet shell so that he has a more traditional looking rig option.  I’ll ask him what speakers he bought, but going that route will require some wiring on your part.

What pedals are some of you using these days? Especially overdrive/distortion, choruses, delays, and weird stuff?
Always been a tone chaser, but not much of a pedal guy. Currently use an atomic amplifier for effects, modeling and cab sims.  Also use a Boss Chorus Ensemble on a couple tunes with my acoustic. That’s it. I have a number of pedals that I’m happy to sell (see page 1 of this thread).  You might like the OCD drive pedal.

My insurance company is giving me $1,430 to replace a 24-year old Seagull acoustic that I've had since college that received water damage over the summer.  I don't have to buy the same guitar... I just need to buy something of the same replacement value.  I don't play much any more, but I would still like to have a decent acoustic around the house.  I'm looking for something with nice overall tone and relatively decent playability.  Any suggestions in this price range?  Are there any national retailers that have good Black Friday deals?
A Taylor is probably going to be your best bet.

By the way, for our Chance for Hope live auction coming up in April, I have secured a 2015 Gibson Les Paul (alpine white) autographed by Joe Perry of Aerosmith specifically for our event.  A friend of mine works for the band and helped us get the guitar autographed. It is easily the craziest most one of a kind signature I’ve ever seen on a guitar.  If any of our more well-heeled FBGs ( @chet ) are interested in the item, let me know and I can send photos.

I should add that I don't really have any desire for an acoustic-electric, so I don't necessarily want to pay for the electric pickups... I'd rather spend the money on something that is the best pure acoustic that I get in that price range.

Hoping you all can help a non-musician out. Is THIS A  "performance worthy" guitar for my son who plays semi-professionally? He's mostly into prog-type rock out of a Champion 100 2x12. He currently has a stock Fender Strat MIM, Fender Teleacaster MIM, a 1976 Korean Squier with SDs,  and a lower-end Ibanez (250?). believe it or not he still plays the Ibanez and it drives me nuts. Was thinking this might be a good option for him to achieve a more professional sound without breaking his old man's bank. As always, thanks in advance.

Other actual performing musicians can chime in here, but achieving a more professional sound is on the player, not the guitar.  Especially with an electric unless he is currently using junk.  To my ears the best "sounding" electric guitars I have are a modded Epiphone LP Junior (originally $80) and a modded Squier Strat (original craigslist $40)  You might want to look on the amp/effects end, but it is all subjective.

That being said, it never hurts to add to the collection.

I have a Les Paul Studio and it plays and sounds great. But it is a much different sound than the guitars your son currently owns. Adding a Les Paul to the mix is good in terms of versatility, but it may not be the right guitar depending on the tone your son prefers.

You’re right. Talent matters most, but gear still matters.

I’m loathe to start a PianoGuys thread, so I’ll do this here...

Bought a nice pre owned baby grand piano for our living room. Figuring we will get the girls lessons. That said, Otis is a bit of a jazz lover, and always wanted to be able to play me some jazz piano. I doubt I’ll have the time or ability to stick to lessons, but with YouTube and the internet being what they are today, figuring I can self teach some. Any recommendations for books or music sites online to accomplish this?

TIA

I played piano from ages 5 - 13. 20+ years later, when I wanted to revisit and relearn the basics on it, I knew I wasn't going to stick with lessons or bother with a step-by-step book that'll start with me playing Hot Cross Buns, so I got this book to help me out again. Most of my keyboard stuff was to accent what I was already doing on guitar, so it was useful enough. It may help get you going. Good luck!

Sorry, but that's just not true. Yes, you have to be able to play but the instrument makes a big difference in professional settings. In your living room or garage, it doesn't matter but on stage or in a studio, low end instruments don't perform well.

In what ways did you mod the two guitars?  New pickups? Bridge?

New pickups.  Fret level and polish. One has a new bridge and on one I changed the pots and caps.  I did all of that just for the experience of doing it.  :)

And now is when you tell me I wouldn't have had to do that if I would have gotten a better guitar to begin with.  I understand that, but that wasn't the point for me.  I wanted a couple of projects.

Do you think that Gibson is what it takes to help the OP's son sound "more professional"?

I don't disagree.  My previous post mentions, "unless it is junk".  I don't consider what he is playing as junk, and he must not either.  What is the MOST important?  Do you think that Gibson will help the OP's son sound "more professional"?

I will never sound like a professional musician no matter how high-end of equipment I have.    Unless we are talking about auto tune.

That’s super cool, and I definitely get why you went through the process you did. What I would say though is that if you buy a cheap guitar and replace the pickups and bridge and pots and caps and fret level, it isn’t entirely accurate to suggest that achieving a more professional sound is not on the guitar. I’m sure your guitars play and sound a whole lot better after all the modding.

Perhaps I misunderstood. I'm not calling his current guitars junk. I was just commenting that a professional musician needs a professional guitar.  I do agree though because I have 2 top of the line guitars (Ibanez Jem and Les Paul Standard) and I sound like crap these days.

My cousin had a Larrivee years ago and I LOVED it.  And you can’t go wrong with a rosewood guitar.  Great call here.
I have the Mahogany version of this guitar (L-03) and it plays and sounds beautiful. I like them better than similarly priced Taylors.

I agree.  And didn't realize they could be had in this price range.  Really nice guitars.  Zed, you'll love these.

Never seen this thread! Sweet.

My favorite acoustic which can be purchased used in the $1,500 range is a Gibson Advanced Jumbo. Someone who got insurance money was asking for suggestions. Not a Taylor fan myself, they’re too bright sounding. If you like lush rich bass tone you will love the Gibson AJ.

My electric is a RARE Martin electric. F-65 is the model. It’s awesome

Oh man, if we're posting links to great guitar playing, I have a treat for you guys.  Here's the best guitarist of all time in rare live footage.  This might be the only footage captured in his prime. It's the only one I could find.  This link should start at the 1:30 mark which is live footage from 1939 but his soloing begins around 2:10 but the other soloist in the band is also legendary and worth listening to.  This is just incredible footage.

Thanks... life has been extremely hectic in the past month, so I haven't been able to really shop around for the new acoustic.  I might put this on the back burner until the new year, but this is one I'll keep in mind.

ETA: Also thanks to the others who posted their suggestions as well... This is a decent amount of money to spend on a new guitar for me, so I'll take my time to find something I'm really jazzed about.  I'm kicking myself for not getting a pass into NAMM this year.  That would have been a perfect place to try stuff out and maybe get a deal on Sunday.

Aside from my acoustic search, my insurance company is also giving me money to replace/repair my old Johnson Millennium 150.  This was released back in the late '90s and was the first tube integrated modeling amp.  The preamp tubes really did make a huge difference in the warmth to the sound and the effects/customization options were really impressive.  Anyways, all of the presets still work, but the encoders are totally shot on it which prevents any tweaking on the sounds.  Most amp repair techs I've talked to won't touch it because of the digital components.  I found one guy who is taking a look at it, but he thinks it will likely cost more to repair than it's really worth at this point.

The other amp that I'm finally getting around to fixing up - and which I'm really more excited to get back in service - is my Mesa/Boogie Studio .22+ (note my version does not have the EQ sliders, but the tone is otherwise the same).  I picked this up used in a small guitar shop in Greenwich Village back in 1999 and it's been pretty much sitting idle along with my guitar for the last 10 years.  It needs a new output transformer and some new power tubes... my guy quoted me $445 for the repair job (which also includes a separate lead drive control mod) which is otherwise a bargain to get this back up and running.  It really is a fantastic little tube amp.... great M/B tone on both the clean and drive settings, enormously versatile and more than loud enough for home and small gig use.

I’m sure this has already been discussed in here, but what are some FBGs favorite YouTube guitar channels?  This would include everything under the sun... gear reviews, lessons, guitar talk, etc.

Some that I’ve enjoyed watching lately...

That Pedal Show - Very pedal driven (obviously), but they have a lot of general gear talk.  I like their banter and discussions on a lot of the vintage stuff (including amps) they bring on the show.

Paul Davids - Plays a bunch of different stuff and talks about a wide range of topics.  His Dutch accent is a fun, robotic bonus too.

Marty Music - I don’t tune into this one much, but I like the huge variety of content.  My buddy knows this guy too and always says nice things about him.

Anderton’s - I used to watch this one a lot, not much anymore.  I dug the “Sounds Like” series they did for a bunch of artists/bands.

I’m not a big sit around and watch YouTube guy, but there is one guitar player on there who I absolutely love.  He’s not a shredder or some superhuman dude, but he is EXACTLY the way I would ask to be able to play if I had a genie in a bottle.  He’s a jazz player, and just has the tastiest licks and sound.  Just gets me.

Not the best recording and not my favorite of his, but timely for the season and a little sample.  Jeffrey Matt, Auld Lang Syne: https://youtu.be/GrXPDWpumPk

Ok one more for the season: https://youtu.be/iIBpRvqQJ4Q

Seriouysly, it just goes to my gut.  This is what I feel like resonates inside me, but I just haven’t ever been committed enough to make my hands do what I hear in my head.  If I could play like anyone in the world, it would be this random dude.

ETA he has some cool instructional stuff too if you’re looking to learn jazz guitar.
