This is what it's all about. If you don't enjoy this, you're not a sports fan.

Irvin's speech is long, but damn is he ever emotional, nice to see another side to these players.

I missed the earlier speeches, but good God, Michael Irvin can talk. ...and talk. ...and talk. and I have NO problem with it whatsoever.

Good for him - and congratulations on an excellent college and professional football career.

I love the Hall of Fame Induction Speeches!

Never have been a Michael Irvin fan, on or off the field. But during his speech I was pretty proud of the man.The best moment off the field that I've ever seen from him.Id

I agree. I had no problem with Irvin taking his time. and I'm grateful he didn't have a yellow derby or a scepter. He showed a ton of class and reverance tonight.Quick question - did the guys in the back (Hall of Famers) seem a little light in numbers?

:( I have an even greater respect for Irvin than I've had in the past. Just an awesome speech. That was a fantastic induction ceremony and one of the things I most look forward to each year. Boy do I love football. :goodposting:

I always love when players bring up their pee wee and/or high school football coaches. That must just make those guys and those towns so proud. It brings everything back to it's basic elements. Youngsters playing football. I love it.

I've never particularly liked Irvin but his speech tonight thoroughly humanized him to me. Hats off.
:goodposting: I think there are tons of people in that group, Keith. It struck me watching him giving a speech that great was that this was just one extremely talented guy. Not just in football. This guy was off the charts in pretty much every area of his life. Some not good. But he was humble and he was real.As he talked about the peaks and valleys of his life, I agreed. And this was a peak for sure. Very cool.J

Michael Irvin didnt leave a dry eye in the house. What an inspirational speech from a guy thats made more than a few mistakes in his life. I hope he stays the course and cleans up his act because he made a believer out of many people today.

HOF induction day must be a very humbling experience for these players - even moreso than the Super Bowl. Its a chance for them to speak to the world about anything and everything theyve ever felt. These guys can address anyone - people from their current life or their distant past. They get an opportunity to make amends for past transgressions and show a much more personal side of themselves. The speeches are much more than just being able to play football.

Im genuinely happy for all of these guys. :wall:

Heh, my buddy (A Cowboys fan) told me: "He spoke for like 25 minutes." I said: "Did he? He started, I went upstars for a bit. Worked on teaching my dog to roll over. I came back down and he had tears flowing, and I was like WTF... I left it on mute and worked on the site..." :wall:

despite never having been an Irvin fan, and despite feeling that if he carried himself like Art Monk, he'd also be on the outside looking in (in other words, self-promotion played a role here), I'd rather not turn this into a Monk-Irvin debate. They both are worthy of the HOF. And Irvin truly is a gifted public speaker. That was a hell of a speach.

did Irvin even have speech cards? man that guys is a GREAT public speaker, unlike Jerry Jones who was introducing him.

Anybody else feel like Jones was going to say:

"And you can get all this for one simple payment of $19.95. But wait, we won't send you 1, but 2 for $19.95"

Completely agree. Nice to hear a guy admit he's not perfect -- none of us are. It really struck me when he said that he made it a point to show his kids who he felt "better" role models for them would be. That and the Bjornson story posted above have me respecting Irvin a lot more tonight. I'm pretty certain a few guys we see as "better role models" could learn a couple of things from the Irvin's speech. :bs:

....and for a guy that was a bit marble-mouthed on ESPN when he worked for them, WITH NO SCRIPT, Irvin only had two grammar slip ups during his 25+ minute speech.

impressive speech by irvin. i understood what he was doing in acknowledging his sons - challenging them vs thanking them - but i did feel bad for the "emphasis" they got over his daughters. girls can turn into bad role models, too.

and, for those drooling over mrs thurman thomas  , he said they met 20 years ago when she was a freshman, so she's probably just under 40.

Well you know, I think those guys actually know English. It's just a matter of when they want to use it.

They're about to re-run Michael Irvin's induction on NFLN. The intro film and Jerry Jones will be coming up first so it will be probably 10 minutes or so before his speech begins.

Well, when he said he hopes his two sons don't grow up to be a father/husband like him, it wouldn't have had the same impact if he was looking at his daughters saying it.Mrs. Thurman and Mrs. Irvin looked rather thick in and around the waist too btw.

"Parent" would have worked. "Spouse" would have worked. "Husband or wife" woud have worked. And, i may be misunderstanding what you mean by impact, but I'd personally put acknowledging and mentoring all of my children ahead of impact.
