I actually would have agreed with you had Wilson not done what he has done at his size and skill set. Manziel does not have to be Wilson (one of top young QB's in the game) and still be a decent starter if he can learn to play like him.

The difference is above the shoulders, and I can't quite imagine Manziel making that leap.

That is the million dollar question.

Manziel has/had a lot of growing up to do. He ate a big piece of humble pie last year. He has since checked himself into rehab, made a move in location of where he lives for a better balanced life, and has been noted by countless individuals within the team and around the NFL that he is doing all the right things to become successful.

I really don't know how intelligent or not Manziel is. He scored extremely well on the wonderlic test which I am not so sure is a great indicator. He could be highly intelligent but perhaps was just making some poor choices. Time well tell if he can put it all together.

Manziel would have been 10-6 on that Seahawks team. A real QB like Luck or Rodgers would have gone undefeated.

interesting

This was significant IMO. This offseason we've seen everything play out perfectly for him, this is another. The hardest part will be succeeding in live action practice and preseason games but...kudos to him for getting this far.

Eli was the worst rookie I ever watched and Manziel could have been if he played more. His 7-8 month transformation has been commendable.

I thought the part about having a WR that could play QB would (possibly) edge out the other 3 if in a numbers crunch was interesting. "He's gotta make the team, gotta make the team, " but that sounded like a plan to me.

He will be cut around the 3rd week of training camp.
No way, not happening

One sided grudge articles are out. Find some even keel type articles

McCown left the sideline to run into the huddle to congratulate Manziel on a sweet pass. Some good is happening and you wouldn't know it from some of these articles

Turned himself around, showing signs, he'll be on day one roster.

Whether it's enough to be a good NFL QB is highly debatable, but it's surely enough to be a backup

Local beat writer said today that McCown is well ahead of everybody and the gap hasn't closed. I can't say for sure that Manziel won't be cut, but it doesn't look like they've given up on him. On the other hand, McCown WILL be the week1 starter -- written in stone.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Cleveland says there's "tangible evidence" of Johnny Manziel's improvement through four training camp practices.

Manziel became the butt of (more) jokes when he bungled his first few camp reps. But the Browns appear pleased with their backup quarterback's progress, as he's gone 43-of-62 (69.3 percent) in camp drills while showing improved accuracy. Starter Josh McCown has gone 54-of-75 (72.0 percent).

Rotoworld:

Johnny Manziel will receive reps with the first-team offense in a Friday scrimmage.

Coach Mike Pettine continues to insist Josh McCown is "firmly" the starter, but firm starters don't cede camp reps to potential challengers. Manziel's camp got off to a rocky start, but ESPN Cleveland reported Tuesday that he's made "tangible" progress. Pettine and the Browns desperately want McCown to start, but he simply might not be good enough.

9 for 11 is outstanding, if Haden was on the D opposite him, then I'm even more impressed.

I expect he will be super nervous his first preseason game and will give him a mulligan for the first few passes, otherwise I'm very curious.

The Browns have curious depth at WR with a few small very fast shifty WRs. I don't think it's fair to say who can cover those guys and not give Manziel credit.

Haters are really feeling almost threatened and grasping at anything on twitter. This last fact might have even more weight than above. If you're a Browns fan and you hate Manziel, you've got the preseason to change your mind. Quite frankly, this is wayyyy earlier than I expected this to happen.

Million miles to go, hasn't played in a preseason game or another NFL game. Johnny's got a head of steam though now

He's doing what a QB should do right now. Still not a good QB but he is at least showing improvement. Nice to see him focusing on football. Could be hope for him yet.

You can tell he has grown up a ton. The way he answered those questions and is carrying himself he realizes this is a job he has to take serious. Very nice strides in the right direction for Manziel.
Saying the right things is not a new thing.Doing? That would be.

"He's really proved to a lot of people that this is important to him and he's ready to be an NFL starting quarterback,'' the offensive tackle said Friday, via the Northeast Ohio Media Group. "Playing well in the scrimmage tonight and looking like an NFL quarterback is another good step in the direction that he wants to go. He's just earning that trust of his teammates that he's going to need to do if he wants to be that starter. He impressed a lot of people out here tonight.''

Thomas' comments sit in stark contrast to his previous criticism of Manziel, including saying in April the quarterback "lost a lot of trust" by how he conducted himself after being named the starter last season.

It takes more than one data point to create a trend. I'd like a better data point than a scrimmage too.
When his biggest critic and teammate pulls a 180 on his opinions, and you can't budge an inch.. we won't hold our breath.

eta - If you had read, Joe Thomas's comments reflected on the entire off season and camps.

Im a Browns fan, I'm well aware of all of the details of the last year, Thomas' comments then, and now, and their context.Cases like these are usually more short term correction and long term regression to previous habits. Hope he's an exception, not expecting it though.

The guy checked himself into rehab, moved his place of residence to get away from night life, as ways to become a better person so he could become a better professional football player. He is not just saying the right things, he took the initiative and has already done things to improve himself.

In football world he has been studying harder, getting help from coaches like Gruden and has shown a commitment to things he did not show last year. I would say he is not just saying them, he is doing them.

Is there still a long ways to go? yes. Will there be some bumps in the road? yes. However, there should at least be some optimism with this recent trend.

I'm a believer. Camp reports sound 180 degrees from where he was at last year this time, when he was floating on inflatable swans holding bottles of bubbly. He looks humbled, and ready to overtake the old veteran journeyman QB in front of him. I've been one of his biggest critics, but you'd be blind not to see this coming. Manziel show coming soon. McCown won't start 16 games for Cleveland. No way...no how.

I am hoping he doesn't need to play this year. I am thinking a year out of the limelight and learning will help him in the way that it has Tebow (who looks night and day from the last time I saw him).

In fact, he accomplished this with the 2's. He would have been going AGAINST the D 2's, except the starting CB's sat, making the 2's starters & the 3's the back-ups. Be that as it may, you still have to make the right reads, the right decisions.

Today (Sunday) coach named him firmly entrenched as #2, meaning he is well ahead of the other two, and well behind McCown.

That's fine. It's progress. Million miles to go to the top, but the guy is doing OK climbing up the mountain.

(USA Today) Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown had some real nice passes during practice Monday, Aug. 10, but QB Johnny Manziel continues to look more focused, and he also saw some time with the starters Monday.
