4 injured starters might sit; Utecht out

By Mike Chappell

mike.chappell@indystar.com

Five starters missed a third consecutive day of practice Friday afternoon, and Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy didn't offer much hope that their status would change for Sunday's game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"I would say it's unlikely many of them will play,'' Dungy said. "We're going to have some game-time decisions.''

The front-line players whose availability probably won't be determined until sometime Sunday are wide receiver Marvin Harrison (bruised left knee), safety Bob Sanders (bruised ribs), running back Joseph Addai (bruised chest) and weak-side linebacker Freddy Keiaho (concussion). All are listed as questionable on the NFL's injury report, which means there's a 50 percent chance they will play.

Tight end Ben Utecht (concussion) also missed Friday's practice and already has been ruled out, along with strong-side linebacker Rob Morris (season-ending knee surgery) and rookie wide receiver Roy Hall (shoulder).

Also questionable for Sunday are wide receiver Aaron Moorehead (back) and kick returner T.J. Rushing (hamstring). Rushing told reporters earlier this week he planned on playing, and Moorehead told Dungy on Friday he expects to be available.

Rookie offensive tackle Tony Ugoh (right ankle) and cornerback Marlin Jackson (team decision) were held out of Friday's practice, but each will play Sunday.

If there's any question regarding a player's health, the team likely will err on the side of caution. After Sunday's game, the Colts have their bye.

"If they're really ready to go, if they feel good mentally, (they) will go,'' Dungy said. "But the other guys have practiced all week and if there's any doubt, we'll go with the guys who have practiced.''

Keiaho sustained a concussion against Denver. Dungy said he didn't know if Keiaho had yet taken his required neuro-psychological test.

Addai is dealing with a bruised chest, similar to what he dealt with during last season's playoffs. He also sustained a bruised shoulder against the Broncos, but the chest injury is what kept him out of practice this week.

"He said it's better than it was in the playoffs,'' Dungy said, "but obviously the playoffs were a do-or-die situation and not Week 5 of the regular season.''

I hate trying to guess coach speak, however DUngy is a pretty straight up guy. IMO, he really would like to just rest the guys that are borderline this week as they have a bye week next and he can get them healthy. He is thinking long term because he knows the Colts are lilkly going to the playoffs. I also believe that part of him knows that for the Colts to be successful this year they must try and lock up home field advantage...Colts on the road in the playoffs, no good. So New Emglnad is likely to put together a 14-2 type record, Dungy cannot take weeks off like he probably could afford to do in years past.

Even if Addai starts it is hard for me to believe he will see a large share of the action. KK looks like an awful sneaky play...I just question how effective he is going to be with Ruud, Brooks, and Cato June chasing him down all day.

TB is only 20th against the run this yr. I would think Keith is a must start if Addai is out.

Yes, but let's break it down beyond just looking at stats in a vacuum...week1: Shaun Alexander 27/105/1...Pretty nice stats for owners but from an NFL POV...the Bucs were fairly solid. Shaun didn't gash them or anything.week2: Deuce 10/49, Reggie 10/27...20/76 combined...Bucs really shut them down.week3: SJax 30/115...for all those carries he did very little damage on the Bucs.week4: Foster 15/64...Bucs wrapped up the Panthers all day. They have really only had 1 week where they allowed anything close to top10 stats for a RB and that was on the road in week 1...I would argue they are a lot better even now. And with Harrison OUT, they can likely double team Wayne, play whoever with man on the other side, June can cover Dallas Clark with Safety help if need be sometimes...they should be able to keep their LB on the field and at times put 7 in the box. I want to believe KK will do fine in relief as I have a chance to play him in many leagues...but at the end of the day we have to be honest about the match up, and I don't think it is as good as you think it is.

But can we agree none of those teams compare to the Colts offense??? The starting RB in Indy is Gold, Peyton would make me a great player if I was on his team!!! :D

All of this info would be great in a Kenton Keith thread, not an injury update to J. Addai thread.

Oct 6 Addai will be a game-time decision Sunday against Tampa Bay, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Advice: Addai left last Sunday's game against Denver with a bruised shoulder, but a bruised chest has kept him out of practice this week, according to the Star.

And we can agree the Bucs catch a break if HoF WR Marvin Harrison is Out along with Addai, right? The Colts didn't exactly tear up the Titans a couple weeks back.

With the game being a late afternoon game, are we really going to have some definite news in the next 1-2 hours? I doubt it and for a lot of owners including myself in certain leagues, by the time we get news at 3:00-3:30, it's too alte to do some of the things we would like to do now. Really stinks too because we all have great info from these boards but if we don't know if a guy is playing, what good is it?

I still go back to Dungy saying that Addai could have gone back in the game last week...have to think he kept him out of practive this week to keep him fresh...but again all that is just speculation on my part.

Ministry - In your opinion IF Addai does play what would be the best case scenario. I see something like 12 carries, 50yds and maybe a TD. Thoughts?

Lets please limit these injury update threads to only injury updates, and not discussions about how they will do. Threads about how the players will do can be made in the shark pool.

Thanks.

The Titans > Bucs. And look at the past few years...Fisher knows how to slow down Peyton and the Colts.

No. I don't. Outside of the TB game the seattle offense has been very productive. The struggles of both the NO and St Lou offenses are real head scratchers. IOW, the TB Bucs have done well against good offenses. Plus, if Harrison, Utecht, and Addai are hurting and are not playing, the Indy odffense probably drops to about the Seahwaks/Rams level. That said, Keith would probably produce good fantasy numbers replacing Addai and is certainly worth a fantasy start. But, like MoP pointed out, it will probably not be a great day from an NFL POV, but wil be a good fantasy day,

Here's my opnion: Forget Addai and start Keith.

At a minimum, Keith for sure is going to get a lot of carries. Addai hasn't practiced all week, and it makes no sense to play him and risk further injury when he could have another couple of weeks to heal.

I look for the Colts to try to build a nice early lead by winging the ball and then use Keith down the line to just pound the ball and chew up clock.

 agree, even if addai goes i think keith gets the bulk of the work

For some worthwhile material...Clayton reported yesterday on SC that Addai would probably not play.
Clayton also said last week right before noon that Ward was going to be inactive for the Giants that night, but lo and behold, Ward started and played well for the NYG that evening. So, you will have to forgive me if I do not trust anything that comes out of John Clayton's mouth.

I agree that Addai won't be playing and you should forget abotu him but disagree that if he did he would not get the bulk of the work. Don't ever underestimate the impact of the bye week coming up. If Addai is not 100%, which it sounds like he is not, he won't play. No way would they play him this week if he was so sore that it required them to limit his carries. He's either good to go or he won't play.

Any updates on whether Bob Sanders will play?

I know this isn't the Bob Sanders thread, but this is the best I could do. ;)

Don't have the link handy, but last I heard, Sanders was a pretty sure scratch for today. That was early yesterday though.

Thanks for the info.It sounds like the Colts are pretty reliant on Sanders to stop the run... So with him out, I'd probably upgrade Graham and Pittman a bit.

No, man. I'm one of the original members. I was a Joe Bryant loyalist since before there was a footballguys.com.I would die on that wall for that man!

FWIW, the"Start/Sit" ESPN guy just said Keith's a "sleeper" because Addai's out.......
I heard - Dayne and Keith are sleepers and that Green is out. I didn't hear him say Addai (Addai owner).
He did say Addai's out. Keith's not a sleeper if Addai's playing.Regardless, this guy's hardly the best resource for info, especially four hours before the game starts.....

Yahoo's Live Fantasy Football Show says Harrison & Addai should play.
Did they give any indication what their conclusion is based on??? Gut feeling? Inside info?
No. They started the show with updates on the main injured players and just mentioned in passing that both "should play."I'm waiting for more info and have Keith pencilled in until I hear otherwise.
They just discussed addai and harrison again and said they are "questionable" and that they "don't know what the situation is there". very helpful
