*****Official Keith Olbermann Thread***** (1 Viewer)

Just what we need, another political TV show that focuses on the negative
That was the title of a daily segment of his MSNBC show and it was not literally the worst person in the world, just someone Olbermann thought was worthy of scorn.

Yes, it focuses on the negative as does most criticism of the other side by anyone involved in political commentary. However, I doubt few would watch any political TV show entitled "The Best Person in the World"

How can anyone like this guy
Well, he does have 980K followers on Twitter, which indicates some people must like him. :hophead:  Although take that with a grain of salt as I don't honestly know what having that many followers really means outside there is an interest in seeing what he has to say - perhaps it is in the watching a train wreck category.

He remains really popular in liberal, progressive and Democratic circles, since he is regarded by many as the best TV commentator since Edward R. Murrow (please refrain from using the rolling laughing emoji, TIA).

So he's Jane Fonda?

No, she has only 869K followers :hophead:

And as I said in Joe's now disappeared Jane Fonda thread (where did it go?) it doesn't really mean much of anything as we don't know why people are following anyone...do all of Trump's 87.2M think of him as "Father Trump" like many in the Trump HQs Thread do? (I hope not as I follow him and certainly don't consider him a father figure).

Some of you guys wait for his every word as if he's Father Trump

Like a lot of people on this forum, I've sort of had a front row seat to Olbermann's career.  As others have mentioned, he and Dan Patrick were the GOATs of ESPN.  Of course, that was a different era, before you could go on the internet and pull up highlights of whatever game you wanted whenever you wanted.  SC was an institution was in college, but highlight shows are basically irrelevant now.

When Olbermann was on MSNBC, he was obviously kind of unhinged.  Again, though, that was a different era.  Cable news -- Fox and MSNBC in particular -- had a sharply negative effect on people's ability to connect with reality since this was really the first time that folks had the ability to live inside a little bubble.  The fact that people took this guy seriously should have been an early sign that intellectual bubbles can cause brain worms (along with Hannity, Rush, etc. -- toss in all the usual suspects).  But cable news networks still need to appeal to a broad-ish audience which limits how nutty they can be, and Olbermann eventually managed to get himself fired from MSNBC partly as a result.  (And partly from being an O'Reilly-level jerk, which is kind of ironic considering how much those two feuded).

Now you have Olbermann -- in what history suggests will be a very short-lived rebirth -- arguing in favor of imprisoning the president's supreme court nominee for no reason other than the identity of the president who nominated her.  That's banana republic Trump-level rhetoric that would normally destroy a person's reputation, but when you live on the internet you can build an audience from the most fringe-oriented and intellectually unwell people in a country of ~350M, which apparently is around 900K or so.  This is the sort of thing I tend to think about when I think of how the internet poisons peoples' brains.  If you decide to seek out crazy people who confirm your priors and pull you off even harder on the fringes of rational thought, those folks exist and are pretty easy to find.  Diving into the internet is about as healthy as diving into an open sewer and seeing how deep the sewer goes.

If my life were a novel, Olbermann would probably be a symbol of of the media: harmless entertainment (ESPN) transforming into worrisome partisan propaganda (MSNBC) transforming again into feverish tribalism (whatever this current thing is).  That's basically the US media landscape in a microcosm over the past 30 years.

I'd like to add that I remember not liking Olbermann, even at ESPN, from the jump. He and Patrick, though required college viewing, were hardened cynics, steely-eyed and relentless purveyors of sarcasm as fun, pain as humor, you get the picture. A hoot with the college kids of the nineties.

I watched Sportscenter as a teen and loved it. Not so much in the mid-to-late nineties. They set back sports highlights thirty years by being the spawn of the mugging (largely, male, white, and educated at least as selective a school as a Patriot League school) "personalities" that then saw fit to comment on sports in that way -- you know that way -- that became all too-familiar and blurred the line between telecasting and radio shock jock. Indeed, Olbermann and Patrick found their various niches on talk radio or cable news, which are almost one in the same aside from the televisual aspect of one.

That Olbermann's career wound up this way is unsurprising to me. He covered politics like he covered sports -- nastily and with menace. To him, good riddance from the public sphere.

I read this and I was like "Yeah, I remember that too -- that was great!"  :lmao:   Of course I'm also a walking stereotype of Generation X that way.

You raise a really good point though.  It's probably one thing to talk about sports using pitch-black irony, but something else entirely to approach government the same way.

My friends loved it. You aren't alone. I felt like the lone dissenter. I didn't hate it all. But it almost even seemed like they were mocking guys that were succeeding. Like when a string of highlights made a basketball player look unstoppable, a phrase like "en fuego" would break out and send those two into titters of mock derision. And there wasn't a real delineated tension between their deconstruction of sports highlights as show and that of sport itself. I remember the scorn in their voices and completely not digging it. And I'd played the sports at remarkably high levels for a college kid who wasn't a Division I athlete, so I had no illusions about the athletes themselves. It was...just an interesting shift in tone in coverage, that's all. Probably to be expected in the modern world of doubt. And it wasn't always P.C. No, it tread upon the lines of racialism (not racism, I'm speaking of different things) often, that kind of commentary and its lineage.

Jorge (Horhe, they'd prononce it) Posada. Home (they'd pronounce it in a Spanish accent with that little trill) Run.

As for your latter point, I don't think I was consciously doing that, but I'll certainly take your distinction and nod along. Then again, I really just used the phrase " there wasn't a real delineated tension between their deconstruction of sports highlights as show and that of sport itself," so I'll stop and plead the case that where Olbermann has wound up really makes sense when you think about what they were doing, though.

And forgive me for sounding a little overly analytical, but one thing Gen Xers specialize in is media consumption and the parsing of truth that comes with that consumption.

That’s nutty but not surprising from him.  Also, he looks really old - guess I haven’t seen him in a while.
Dam..Keith has aged in dogs years.  Was shocked to read he is only 61 as he looks 80.   Looking like Andy Rooney and acting like a grumpy old geezer.

I like his social media support of adopting dogs who have been deemed “problematic”, but that’s all.

Why are we wasting vaccinations on Texas if Texas has decided to join the side of the virus?

Ugh. What an appalling tweet. Nothing can be said in defense of this.
I have to admit I opened this in expectation of a full-throated defense of what Olbermann was saying. I am pleasantly surprised. There really is no good defense or reason for saying this other than it is the knee-jerk reaction of a seventh grader who hasn't gotten his way with the sporting equipment that the school provides. Personally, I always thought Olbermann was like this and I think blinders were on when it came to tone. Same reason I always hated O'Reilly. Rude to guests, no civility toward opponents, incorrigible, ostentatiously (un)learned. A miasma of things that tended to blind me to their particular points on a given day.

“Miasma” is wildly underused. Gracias.

Many thanks in return. I was busting it out and had to double check to see if I'd gotten it right. A little more along exhalation lines than I thought, but still good to go about an impenetrable fog, or something which corrupts, in this case, the corrupted fog around the atmospherics that prevents the recipient of a point from focusing on its correctness rather than the manner in which it is doled out.

Olbermann explains his controversial tweet:

S.E. Cupp @secupp 6h

Olbermann to Texas: Drop Dead
Keith Olbermann @KeithOlbermann 17m

No.

GREG ABBOTT to Texas: Drop Dead

What I wrote here was a question: if the authorities in Texas are clearly and belligerently siding with the virus against humanity, why are we sending the vaccines there now?

Vaccinations cannot, by themselves, overcome a Governor advocating for mass suicide.

This is the state’s less-insane-Senator’s attitude towards this. It’s not fixable.

Keith Olbermann Calls for Dissolving Supreme Court, Says States Should Refuse to Comply: ‘#IgnoreTheCourt’

The reactions to the Supreme Court’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen have been strong and in some cases over the top, but former sportscaster and former cable news personality Keith Olbermann took it to the next level when he called for both dissolving the court and ignoring it at the state level.

In a 6 – 3 decision the court struck down a New York state law on concealed carry, prompting strong reactions from both Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) and President Joe Biden, as well as other officials.

But where the governor vowed to take her state’s fight into legal and legislative directions, Olbermann advised a more anarchic approach: just don’t listen.

“It has become necessary to dissolve the Supreme Court of the United States,” the former lots of things Olbermann said. “The first step is for a state the ‘court’ has now forced guns upon, to ignore this ruling.”

The added “Why and how do think you can enforce your rulings?” was a nice touch, totally ignoring the structure of government and the Constitution which both grant the court the authority to make such rulings and the executive branch of the federal government the power to enforce them.

Olbermann is behaving like a jerk and an idiot. He’s not stupid but he’s sure acting like it.

I disagree.  I actually think Olbermann is legitimately a stupid person who happens to have a pretty good sense of humor.  He parlayed a successful run on SC to his journalism gig, which flamed out because, as I mentioned, he's too stupid to practice journalism successfully.

The worst kept secret in media is that Katy Tur literally broke him.

Watching her get married and have kids with someone else drove Olby into the deep end. He was warned. People told him, this is a Hall and Oates moment for you, just walk in the other direction.

The network media industry is also extremely incestuous. Long hours and high stress coupled with constant gamesmanship. If I was Sean Gilmartin, I would just save the heartache and get divorced right now.

 I have trouble picturing Krysten Sinema and Keith Olbermann dating.

Keith Olbermann - 3h

When we dated, in 2010-11, Kyrsten was a legit progressive, far to my left. Now she has embraced the Political Industry where there is only process, not policy, and never people. Perfect solution: she can be the next host of @MeetThePress

Olbermann solidifying his status as the #1 Preeminent Douchebag. He'll throw anyone under the bus if it gets him another like.

There's a reason no one listens to him and he can't hold down a job.
