Actually, this is thread for the college basketball offseason. I'm trying to hide it from fisherman and people that don't know how to play well with others.

So... Discuss!

Calipari has been hinting he might go superbig at times with Patterson, Cousins and Orton. Could be scary.

He also told Wall and Bledsoe to play with each other as well as against each other in pick-up games in Lexington because he intends on putting both of them on the court at the same time during the season.

2 PG's and 3 bigs would be good shtick.Reggie Redding (Villanova) got busted for dope. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

Plenty of tantalizing combinations for Kentucky

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- As Kentucky coach John Calipari prepared to take a few days off from recruiting in the final week of the evaluation period, one thing he promised himself he wouldn't worry about was how the Wildcats will play next season.

Well, at least he's trying not to be too fixated about it as he cuts away with his family for a brief respite.

But it's hard for Calipari not to obsess over the different wrinkles available to him with the Cats.

"I don't want to create too much anxiety with my own body by spending too much time on this,'' Calipari said, "because you don't really know until you get them on the floor."

But he can't help himself. The possibilities are too tantalizing.

Calipari said he spent time with Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers here at the AAU Super Showcase discussing how Rivers used "two big guys and ball-screening like he does in Boston. I wanted to talk to him about some of the things he did when he went to that bigger lineup with two posts."

Summer Buzz: UK

Kentucky is among the "teams on the rise" in ESPN.com's Summer Buzz series. For a look at the latest in Lexington, check out our Insider analysis.

The focal post player for Kentucky is rising junior Patrick Patterson. The options next to him are numerous, led by high-profile newcomers Daniel Orton and DeMarcus Cousins. But Calipari might not just play Patterson and one of those two.

"It might be Orton and Cousins at the same time to steal minutes for both of those kids,'' Calipari said. "I want Daniel and DeMarcus to get minutes. If we're trying to get them as many minutes at a time when Patrick's not on the floor you may have to play both of them, which is not all bad. But you've got to know how you're going to play with both of them on the floor."

Calipari, who under NCAA rules isn't allowed to watch the summer pickup games in Lexington, said he told incoming point guards John Wall and Eric Bledsoe to not just go against each other.

"I told them to play with each other, too,'' said Calipari, who plans to use a lineup of two playmaking ballhandlers at times next season. The depth on the perimeter with Wall, Bledsoe, incoming freshmen Darnell Dodson and Jon Hood, and returnees Darius Miller (who won gold in New Zealand with the Under-19 team earlier this month), Ramon Harris and DeAndre Liggins gives Calipari a slew of combinations.

Meanwhile, Kentucky got out of a guarantee game against Coppin State and filled its schedule with one of the Big West favorites, Long Beach State. The Wildcats also have littered the schedule with the usual heavyweight names in North Carolina, Connecticut (SEC-Big East Invitational), Louisville, Indiana, as well as a tournament in Cancun, Mexico, that includes Virginia, Stanford and Cleveland State.

"What we tried to do is eliminate any teams that were 250 and above in the power rating,'' Calipari said. "Last year they had a bunch. My teams try not to play any of them. We try not to play any in that box (on the selection committee's cheat sheet that breaks down the schedule in 50-team power-rating groupings). At this point, and you don't know what will happen with injuries, none of the teams on our schedule projected to be in that range."

• Incoming Florida freshman Kenny Boynton was the final player cut last month at the USA Basketball Under-19 team trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was one of two high school seniors (the other was incoming Pitt forward Dante Taylor) invited but his inexperience on the college level likely led to him not making the team, which ultimately won the gold medal in New Zealand. Since then, the highly touted Boynton has been on Florida's campus taking classes at summer school, working out and prepping to be the Gators' lead playmaker next season.

"I thought it was a really humbling experience in a very positive way,'' UF coach Billy Donovan said. "Here's a kid that has gotten so much publicity and so much exposure and all of a sudden he gets cut. I think he would have loved and enjoyed the experience. But since he's been here everything has been going great."

• Rivers was interviewed on ESPNU on Monday and said his son, Austin, has a solid commitment to Florida. He said the familiarity with the Gators (the family has never moved from their Orlando-area home) and Donovan was the reason. Austin Rivers, who played here on Monday night, continued to show his ability to be a playmaker as a wing, bringing the ball up the court, scoring on drives and making mid-range jumpers.

• Siena finally got a high-profile team to at least play in a one-way, guarantee game next season. It took a former Siena coach in Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt to make it happen. Siena coach Fran McCaffery said the Saints will play at Georgia Tech next season. Siena, which should be the MAAC favorite and was No. 20 in my latest top 25 rankings, played at Kansas and at Pitt last season. Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury, still looking for a Dec. 16 home game, said he would consider playing the Saints in a guarantee game as well. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 12 in my top 25.

• How to hold on to commitments continues to be a pressing issue and has resurfaced yet again with the high-profile decommitment of Josh Selby from Tennessee. One idea that circulated Monday night that might be of interest to the National Association of Basketball Coaches to pursue is to get rid of the signing periods and allow a player to sign a binding national letter of intent within 30 days of giving a verbal commitment. The 30-day window would give the player a bit more time to ensure he has made the right decision. The other component that should be included in the letter of intent to get the document up to the current era is an out for the player if the coach leaves the school. Schools are less likely to fight a player's decision to ask out of the letter of intent if the coach is no longer at the school. The most recent example involved Xavier Henry. He signed with Memphis, but once Calipari left for Kentucky, Henry asked out of his letter and went to Kansas.

• UCF coach Kirk Speraw added a veteran assistant on his staff in Robert McCullum, the former Western Michigan and South Florida head coach. McCullum went 40-76 in four seasons with the Bulls, his first two while playing in Conference USA and his final two while in the Big East.

• Tulsa and San Diego State are discussing playing each other in early November, which would be the first leg of a home-and-home series. The Golden Hurricane should be the favorite in Conference USA, while the Aztecs are one of the top three teams in the Mountain West. A game like this is perfect for both schools -- a solid power-rating game that should help each of them toward their goals of reaching the NCAA tournament.

• If the favorites hold out, the semifinals of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas in November could include four top 25-type teams. Northern Iowa is the projected favorite in the Missouri Valley and is in line to play Tennessee, the likely second pick behind Kentucky in the SEC East, in one semifinal. Purdue, a top-10 team and a possible Big Ten title contender with Michigan State, would face Boston College, a projected top-four ACC team, in the other.

The Paradise Jam has long tried to find its niche within the crowded Thanksgiving tournament schedule and thought it had a blockbuster potential foursome last season with Connecticut, Miami, Wisconsin and San Diego. But only two of the four reached the NCAA tournament. UConn was a top seed and a Final Four team, but Wisconsin barely made the tournament. Miami flamed out late and San Diego's injuries pushed the Toreros out of postseason play.
LinkThis is the most positive article Andy Katz has ever written about the Wildcats.

Rivers recruiting was mentioned earlier today. Here is what I found.

The biggest news on the recruiting front to come on Wednesday was from Austin Rivers. The early commitment to the Florida Gators indicated that he is going to see a few other schools. Despite that, Rivers made it very clear that he intends to remain a Gator.

"Yes, I am going to take some visits just to look around out of respect for my father who wants me to see some other places," said Rivers. "I am definitely still committed to Florida, but I want to see a few other schools."

He continued, "I don't know which other schools I will visit yet, but I think I will visit Duke and a couple of other places, depending on what my dad wants."

Ugh. I can certainly understand listening to his dad's advice on this, since he certainly has some experience, but at some point you've gotta be your own man.

at least he's taking advice from a guy who knows.recent events sort of suggest that there is something somewhat flaky going on at UF. Doc just wants the best for his kid and he's obviously qualified to give the advice.

For the record, i still think he ends up at UF. I actually think i might prefer Bradley Beal over Rivers if Duke had the choice. I havent seen Rivers pass or play too much defense and he doesnt have a left hand.

Definitely true, but he makes it sound like his dad is twisting his arm. Maybe there are storm clouds gathering at UF?ETA: The Selby and Knight to UK rumors sounds like very good news for Duke, from what I've heard I'd much rather have Irving than Selby.

Calethes left really early and the Alex Tyus situation was kinda strange. Its hard to believe a program could drop off so badly after back to back titles.

IMO< they're 50/50 to make the tourney this year barring Boyton exploding for 17 or 18 PPG right off the bat (which i dont see happening)

I'm anxious to see how well Drew develops for UNC over the summer. As I mentioned in the other thread, I've been hearing good things. I'm anxious for the year to start, because the Heels will still be good. Might not be that great in December and I have a feeling I'll be disappointed going to the UNC/Texas game in December, but they will gradually improve as the year goes on.

BTW - Great thread!!!

At this point, I am assuming UK gets one of Knight, Selby, Irving and one of Lamb, Jackson.

Some of the Carolina fanbase is getting restless because no one has signed the past year. Fact is there aren't that many schollys to go around for the Heels right now. Although, I really am starting to have some serious doubts about McAdoo. Heard from a couple of reliable sources that he's 50/50 at best right now choosing UNC.

In the "Looking Good in The Off-Season Dept.", Darius Smith (UConn, duh) has been having an exemplary Hartford Pro-Am. Granted, it's a Pro-Am, but he seems like a steal so far.The one guy who's a little further off is Andre Drummond (2012), a 6'10" 250 lb. 16 year-old with a 7'2" wingspan :lmao: and good leaping ability who is from Middletown, CT. Still very early, but I think UConn's the prohibitive favorite, given their reputation.

Cats schedule Long Beach State

Andy Katz is reporting that Kentucky has got out of its contract with Coppin State and has put one of the favorites in the Big West, Long Beach State, in its spot.

Calipari has said he will schedule teams that will help his teams RPI and improve their seeding in the NCAA Tournament. He has done that with Long Beach State.

Other scheduling rumors deal with Duke and Kansas. Supposedly, Kentucky is trying to schedule Duke in Atlanta and Kansas in St. Louis in the near future. Those would be fun games. Let's see if K tries to duck this.

KU freshman Elijah Johnson is rumored to be a redshirt candidate because of the backcourt depth. I hope it doesn't happen, because EJ might be the best all-around athlete Bill Self has ever recruited - EJ hit a between-the-legs 360 dunk during one of the all-star games this spring.

I don't think there are any looming problems or "storm clouds" like shut it down mentioned for Florida, just a couple of very young, flawed teams fielded after the two NC teams. To me Coach Donovan's recruiting effort wasn't up to par in '06 and '07 (that flirtation with the Magic couldn't have helped) and it showed in the talent level on the floor. Pretty embarrassing to get shut out of the NCAAs the past two years - the last two teams lacked team chemistry and heart bigtime. That really reminds me what a special group the championship teams were - their chemistry, poise and balance was so great I think maybe Donovan forgot a little bit what it's like to manage a young team that doesn't know how to play together yet.Calathes leaving early was the capper on a pretty disappointing career for him with the Gators imo - guy was a very good scorer and outstanding passer, but his lack of athleticism really limited his effectiveness as a go-to guy in the clutch. He also was a flop as the de facto leader of the team, he never had the personality to fill that role. Can't really hold that against him though, there was just no vocal upperclassmen presence on the team at all the last two years. The Tyus situation came about because UF played him at center last year and wanted him to play power forward this year and Tyus feels his best shot as a pro is at small forward. Apparently the two sides came to some kind of compromise there.UF should be a lot more athletic this year with legitimate size and lots of depth in the frontcourt, and I think Kenny Boynton's going to be a hell of a player. But not a lot of depth at guard (only three scholarship guys on the roster), and still a roster full of freshmen and sophomores who will play a lot.I think they get back to the big dance this year. Next year though, with Rivers and (hopefully) Brandon Knight, I think the Gators could make some noise.

I still think Rivers is UF bound (and even if he de-commits, i'd rather Duke take Beal) but i wouldn't be counting on just yet (yet alone a year early).

I honestly have no idea where Knight ends up at this point. Being the next in the line of Calipari developed lottery picks at PG ( :lmao: ) is gonna be tempting, but i have to believe this kid and his 4.2 GPA are smart enough to see through his tactics.

I'd actually like to see him at UF. I like Donovan.

yeah I think Rivers is pretty solid. Knight is almost a must-get to me for UF being right in the backyard and I know they're putting on the full-court press, but I have no idea where he goes either.

oh I forgot to mention, look for a little dude named Erving Walker to blow up at point guard for Florida this year. I think he's gonna be a bigtime player as a sophomore.

How many times are you going to repost the same thing? We get it, Cal can't coach PGs.

not saying he cant. Not saying that at all. Just saying that anybody can coach Derrick rose, Tyreke Evans and John Wall. But fair enough. In an effort to keep this thread tool free, i will not bring it up again.

As a fan of Louisville I am biased and hope things don't go well in Lexington, but I have to say I am not looking forward to facing Wall for even 1 year. :missing: I know its just a scrimmage but check out these links from a camp held last week where some of the Incoming freshmen scrimmaged against some of the returning players (not sure who all was on which team but Bledsoe, Wall, and Cousins were all on the same team.

I am not saying I disagree with you, because I think those guys were NBAers before they stepped foot on campus. But, I think the same can be said for many players all around the country. There are very few guys that "come out of nowhere" in the college game anymore. To me, this is because guys like us follow them as soon as they enter high school, hoping they choose our school. Cal probably does not deserve a ton of credit for turning these guys into lottery picks and NBA stars, but do K, Izzo, Roy etc. deserve the credit either?

:football: I certainly agree with this. For the most part, major programs get major HS prospects. With the amount of info out there, guys like us are gonna know about these kids when they're 15 years old. The other day, i was talking to my dad. I told him to watch out for Michael Gilchrist. He's like "who the hell is Michael Gilchrist?". We're from NJ, so i told him he's a stud from St. Pat's. How Old? 15. He can't believe we know this type of stuff. Quite frankly, he's a little concerned about me.

The information age has changed everything.Connecticut began recruiting Kevin Garnett because Ray Allen told the coaching staff about them, otherwise he wasn't on their radar. I am pretty sure that teams don't find out about recruits from a tip from one of their players anymore.
