**** OFFICIAL **** LOST - The TV Series (4 Viewers)

The name of the ####ing episode was "?". All the conversation led was centered around a question mark. Seriously people, I don't know if you guys are drunk or high or an alias of beagle, but you don't have to be Columbo to figure this out.

We do not necessarily know for sure that the Pearl hatch equals the middle question mark on Locke's map, correct? I do think a monitoring station makes sense to be in the middle of all the other hatches though.

Well, Eko did see the ? around the hatch from up above....

I thought that the clearing (remember Eko said the ground was salted to prevent growth) was shaped like a ?. It wasn't until Eko had climbed up the wall that he saw that shape. Also, all of the talk about the ?, makes me 99.9% sure that the Pearl hatch is the question mark on Locke's map.
For everyone using he lost.cubit.net image of the "question mark" as evidence, take a look at this. Somewhere between 3 and 4 o'clock is "The Pearl?", nowhere near the center ?. Couple this with the actual Eko quote (he said CIRCLE), you cant help but "question" if he and Locke found the "?" or something else.

God I hate this thread.
The squiggly line led them there?Ive been wrong before and admitted it (Michael), but couple the black light map with Eko's quote, and I dont think you need to be special to question whether or not the Pearl is the "?".

Maybe that's being harsh, but the whole freaking episode centered around the question mark. It looked clearly like a question mark. Why make something out of nothing. There are a million other mysteries here, why focus on something obvious?Like most shows, the producers are hoping the audience is capable of handling the most basic stuff. And we've spent 3 pages doing everything but that.

Normally, Id agree with you, but something seems wrong to me here. Eko spends half the show obsessing about a question mark, then sees something circular on the ground and calls it a circle, not a semi-circle.Locke sees a map with a "?" "bunker" in the center and "The Pearl?" written off to the side, far enough to idicate that this label [The Pearl] applies to the bunker closest to it, not the "?".

Just saw the episode and some thoughts:

1. Helluva episode. Major plot points revealed though at least one (the button pushing being a psychological experiment) was pretty easy to spot.

2. If the producers really did plan on killing off Ana-Lucia and Libby the entire season why introduce a significant aspect of Libby's character (her being in the institution at the same time as Hurley) that will never be resolved? They could still have developed her character as someone Hurley was falling for only to die and have the same emotional reaction. They didn't need to introduce something of extreme significance that they knew they would never resolve -- unless it wasn't always the plan all along to kill off both Libby and Ana-Lucia or either one. Yes I'm being cynical. :)

3. I really have enjoyed watching Locke turn on the island this season. He and Walt were the two characters who really felt like the island was their new home last season but this season it's been all about Locke losing his faith and sense of purpose on the island. And he hit absolute rock bottom in this episode.

3a. The role reversal of sorts between Locke and Jack is also interesting. Where Jack doubted the need to keep pressing the buttons and it was Locke's faith that pushed him; now it's Locke who's doubting and Eko whose faith is guiding him. The depth of character on this show is fantastic.

4. Michael has to die. I don't mean that because I dislike the character (I don't) but how many characters on a TV show can be viewed as heroes who killed two innocent people in cold blood? That's a pretty tall order for the writers to try and swing Michael back to the side of the good guys after what he's done. I haven't read any spoilers and don't want to but I think it'll be a very tough sell to try and reform Michael.

5. I like the fact Jack can be a ruthless SOB when necessary. Using Libby's suffering as a way to find out where Sawyer hid his stash was brilliant. Yea it was cold and nasty but it was downright brilliant.

OMFG WE ALL HAD IT WRONG!!! IT IS A...

Seriously: for the DHARMA folks it was a salted circle. For Eko and Locke its a question mark. The true purpose versus the symbolism parallel the story line of the episode. Hence why I said it can be seen as both. Now, if folks would like to quite being so obtuse, we can carry on and get back to the "Apollo" or "Paulo" (or something sounding like that) ferry that was supposed to carry them back to their barracks before they received their next "mission/assignment." (No I didn't hear either, but they both seem logical)

Also, we could discuss the time stamps from the log print out and how the chinese year for them is roughly 4749 or 2052 to the Western world.

I tend to agree, but they could also have shot a bunch of scenes for next season(s) with Libby to answer the question about the insane asylum. They already did this to some extent with Boone showing up in flashbacks after his death.

The part of the "experiment" that bothers me is the camera in the Pearl hatch. This "experiment" has to have more layers to it than just one group watching unkowing others. Also, the nature of the experiment is such that no one who ever participates in the button pushing role can be used in the observation role.

Good point. If the map is correct, they are not at the ?

Hey, Hulk, I don't normally do the Spoilers pre-episode. But after last night I went back and watched the ones you posted a couple days ago from You Tube. Are they always completely made up or was it a joke week? Or was that a new source being tried out. If anybody hasn't checked them, its worth a chuckle how far off they were. I was just wondering if I missed something on that.
That was my first time with those spoilers.Turned out to be total BS.

I took them as solid spoilers since they were posted on the fuselage, which is normally on point.

Its fine by me though, it was nice to be suprised for once.

In the past episode, entitled "?", apparently a giant circle guided Eko and Locke to a new hatch.

In next weeks episode, entitled "3 minutes", something crazy will happen, and it will take exactly 4 minutes.

:loco:

Seriously. Those examining the black light map... it says, "The Pearl?"

As in, the map maker was uncertain if that is where the pearl was.

The whole episode, Eko is having visions about getting to the question mark. He tells Locke that he needs to take him to the question mark. When uses the copy of the map to get to the question mark, which is in the middle of the map that Locke made.

And then, he climbs the cliff, looks down, and along with 99% of people who don't have copious ammounts of free time, Eko sees a question mark.

Furthermore, the LOGICAL spot for an observation post that oversees all of the other hatches is in the middle of the hatch network. It would save on cabling costs, among other things.

But it sorta kinda looked like a circle!

Just noting that with the plane covering the Pearl Station it would seem that no one was watching the losties since Boone died. Possibly why Henry was sent in.
This may end up being the same thing you said, but the Pearl hatch had to be deserted since before Boone died. With the plane on top, and the door latched from the outside, noone was getting out. Unless, there is another exit we didn't see.Boone also died a while before we met Desmond. This means that Desmond was not being monitored, at least from the Pearl hatch. Why is that? Because he wasn't an original DHARMA experimental subject?

This is probably obvious, but whatever the catastrophic failure was, really threw a wrench into the DHARMA initiative. Perhaps someone didn't enter the code at 108 minutes which resulted in disaster, and now, as Eko alluded to pushing the button is VERY important afterall.
We're thinking along the same lines. Just to try and make some connections...I think the blast door map had multiple creators/contributors who became aware of the observors and their own role in an experiment (hence quotes like "A mouse does not rely on just one hole"). Their knowledge lead to an incident. The notes on the blast door seem to indicate multiple incidents or failures though.

Also, Eko swiped a massive pile of log printouts. I'm hoping he and John pour over them and find some numbers not in the proper sequence -- because the ones present were all 108 minutes apart.

Was there any way to tell if the logs were recent or old? If the printer was still working, that has to mean somebody was in that hatch fairly recently to change the paper and ink cartridge.

I guess it depends on your definition of "recently" I don't think anyone could have been in there since Locke and Boone found the plane and it fell over the entrance.

It was a dot-matrix printer.....those cartridges last forever!

Well, every hatch so far has had another entrance.....I would guess the same here.

The only hatch we've seen with multiple exits is the Swan so far. The smaller one the Tailies were in, either didn't have one, or it was blocked off. We didn't really get to see all the medical hatch, so there could be one there, but the Pearl seemed pretty small. Perhaps Eko and Locke didn't fully explore it, but they seemed to take a pretty good look around the place.

The medical hatch had the main entrance, and then there was writing on the wall over a tunnel that said, "Escape Hatch", so I'm guessing there was another way out.

The Arrow, I don't remember noticing more than 1 entrance.

The Swan obviously has two.

The Pearl, it could have two, but we didn't see another one.

Maybe the experiments were all still in full swing when Flight 815 crashed. And at that point, the others decided to break all of them off, and concentrate on messing with the Losties full time?

Some great new finale pics here if you are interested. If you know anything about the finale, this doesn't really spoil anything....just something to think about.

If you know NOTHING about the finale, don't click.

If it was a circle and not a question mark the episode wouldn't have been called "?". It would've been called "o". Let's not be stupid.

And who ever said the Psychic lying or Desmond lying to us would've gone against the way the writers bring the show to us, because they haven't told us any straight up lies or something? What was Henry Gale doing for like 4 episodes? To say there is no deception in the show is ridiculous. And to say those lies weren't effective would be terrible, because boards like this filled pages arguing how they believed Henry Gale's story.

Happy Thursday.

:banned: :banned:
You misunderstood my point, not speaking for other folks who have said the same thing. I said that as of right now I do not believe that the any dialouge we have seen has been an outright lie that hasn't been resolved right away, i.e. that episode. For example, in Henry Gale's case, we were told by Danielle that Henry was an Other and that he would lie to us. We also were told by Sayid that he felt no remorse and he knew he was an Other.

That is why I said I made a mistake trying to out think what we were told right after we met Henry and I thought maybe he was actually not an Other. That is also why I am in the camp that Desmond was not lying. I think he was told stuff by Kelvin and is not an Other trying to deceive Jack et al. Now we don't know what has happened to him since, but I think he was truthful.

Good call on the emergency exit. It could be that the medical hatch has 3 exits, but that's just presumption. As far as the experiments being in full-swing when the plane crashed, I don't know. Desmond doesn't appear to be an original DHARMA subject. Considering how important the DHARMA initiatve deems their work, it would seem odd for them to completely abandon the other experiments, full-stop, to mess with the Losties. UNLESS, part of the overall experiment is to mess with the newly "attracted" people to the island.

Barring my last statement, this leads me to believe that everything went awry and/or stopped before flight 815 crashed.

However, this doesn't explain why there was a food drop made to the Swan. IRRC, Desmond was scared to death to leave the hatch, appeared to have been in there for at least a couple years which would seem to indicate that there should have been other food drops, yet the Losties have found no evidence of them.

There's no question I think there are more layers involved. Those who are watching are being watched as well. It's all part of a giant experiment. What needs to be answered is whether the survivors were brought to the island as part of that experiment or whether it was just a stroke of fate.

Maybe fate has brought us all to the FFA to discuss it......

DESMOND: It was 3 years ago. I was on a solo race around the world, and my boat crashed into the reef, and then Kelvin came.

Oops, also forgot to mention, did the psychic guy tell Claire her baby can't be raised "by another" or "by an other"?
The title of episode 1.10 was "Raised by Another"And in the text of the transcript (which, admittedly, is "official" as far as I know) is:

MALKIN: It can't be another. You mustn't allow another to raise your baby.

Let's lay out the "obvious" timeline. This is assuming that everything we've been shown has been straightforward. Once we lay this out, then we can figure out where its wrong:

1. Dharma set up the hatch system on this island to run psychological experiments on people. The subjects were unaware they were part of this experiment. We know this from the video found in the swan hatch.

2. The experiments were evidently abandoned in some sort of panic, as no-one even took the time to clean the ashes off the table in the swan hatch. Its like they got up and scrammed.

3. They have been abandoned for many years, perhaps 15-20.

4. Flight 815 crashes on the island in two parts. They find the swan hatch. They find Desmond still engaged in one of the experiments.

5. There are "others" on the island. They wear costumes to fool the losties, complete with make-up and fake beards. They appear to know more than the losties, but also do not seem to have full control of the island. They have to infiltrate the losties to try to get information. They have to use an abandoned hatch as a makeshift hospital, then quickly abandon it. They make lots of mistakes. They could be part of Dharma. Dharma could be experimenting on the others as well. Or perhaps they are people who escaped from the Dharma experiments.

6. Dharma does regular food drops, demonstrating they are still active and in some position of control.

7. There's some french lady who claims to have been on a ship that wrecked here. She looks for her daughter who apparently was taken by others and is apparently still alive and has been seen with others. She seems to be a part of their group but also disobeyed them by releasing the young mother. This demonstrates again the lack of control and possible conflict within the group of others.

I thought they abandoned it because Claire escaped. I think we can all agree that the Others mission isn't just to kill the 815 survivors, otherwise they would have done/tried that already. The Others still want to hide their actual identity, so I think they left the medical hatch (they did take the supplies) because it would have blown their cover since Claire obviously knew where it was.

The Others do want to hide their actual identity. Why?

For what purpose?

This is one of the most interesting topics on the show.

Absolutely and I have no idea. I keep thinking that they are the remnants of the Dharma experiments gone bad and that the Hanso foundation bolted after the "incident."The previews Wednesday night showed Michael getting captured by Zeke and ending up in that camp he described. After a discussion with a friend, he made me realize that that could just be a flashback of how Michael was initially captured, not getting captured after shooting AL.

If that really is the Others camp, then they have created their own little society post-incident and are still beholden to some remnants of the experiments (i.e. grabbing good people). Not sure why they don't want to interact with the other survivors, but they still send spies.

Here's a way-out-there thought on what they are all staring at in the water (that we saw in the preview)

another plane crash?
