I read somewhere online that you can dodge a blue shell if, and only if, you have a mushroom. Right before the shell hits you it comes on-screen and hovers above you for a split second before slamming down. You have to shroom out of there right when it comes on-screen and hovers in that split second. I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. Sounds tough to do though. And a lot of luck involved.
Yeah, I have to figure out how to unlock more. I saw somewhere that Funky Kong is the fastest character.

Does the invincibility star protect from the blue shell?

I would think so. However the problem is that's probably a very rare occurrence. They only hand out stars to people who are near dead last. So for you to have a star and also be in first place would be hard to do.

What about Bullet Bill? If I'm in 8th, activate Bullet Bill and start shooting past folks then the blue shell comes from behind me as I take the lead while still in bullet form, will the blue shell knock me out?
i've unlocked all those listed above and just unlocked Bowser Jr too.
i think Dry Bowser, Daisy and alternate Mii's are all i have left to unlock...
...i don't recall where or when you get Birdo out, but i think it was during the 100cc races.
I know i made sure i got one star on every 50cc and 100 cc races and i'm now on the 150cc races...otherwise, i'm sure you can find how to unlock on the net somewhere...

I think you unlock Birdo by doing a certain # of time trials.I usually play between 10 p.m. - midnight CST.
Cool....that link says that you can unlock all of the "special" characters after racing so many races. So I'll get them all eventually!Any word on the characters abilities?
I heard that Funky Kong is the fastest but I haven't seen him yet. Also, I think when I racing someone with the King Boo character, his symbol disappeared at times on the map so you didn't know exactly where he was.

Thanks for the link. I may switch to Funky off of Rosalina. I like driving a heavy cause I hate getting bumped around so much by other racers. Though it's nice to be toad once in a while as long as nobody touches you.
Yeah, I've been killing it lately with Rosalina on a bike. Up to about 6700 rating.

Yeah, I use the top bike (can't remember what its called). Im somewhere in the mid 6000s. Intrigued by Funky though - I'll give him a shot tonight.

I would play but LOST is on tonight. I still have the mirror courses to gold and am working on starring the 50cc cups. My time has been spent releasing the staff ghosts and starring the lower cc's. I race with Daisy and the Mach Bike.

I've noticed that in online races, I can knock someone off the course and just as fast as they drop off, they pop back up slightly ahead of me!
Anyone know how to do this???

If you hit the #2 button right as you hit the ground after you reset, you will get a boost. Maybe that's the reason?

Does anyone else have the following problem?
When playing online my first race may start off with 9 or 10 other people and we will race a few races. Than after so often the people will dwindle to 7 than 6 than 4 and rarely go back up to 8 or 10 even. Where do the people go?

Honestly, if I'm playing on-line and I'm consistently getting beat by a couple of people who have scores over 7000, I'll leave and find new people.It's no fun seeing them take the short cuts, using the faster unlocked carts, etc.I'll be on a little bit if anyone is game.I was suspecting this to be the reason. Today I played so much I moved my rating from 5500 to about 7100. I use one of the unlocked bikes but it is actually the 4th fastest of them all. The Mach Bike is quicker and another one is as well. I use the Dolphin bike.As far as short cuts go. I know of the two on Delfino Square but you need a mushroom to use either of them. The one shortcut on Daisy's Circuit works best with a mushroom as well otherwise you need a power slide before the shortcut. Those are the only two I have been able to see people using. I've just started playing. I've never played any version of MK before. I'm currently using Automatic, but I understand you really need to use manual to get faster scores. Using automatic, sometimes I get the drift boost, but I can't seem to do it on command (I understand with auto you can't get the mini turbo).
What is the rating people are talking about? Is it only generated once you play online? I'd like to play online if anyone is interested, I'll post my user id shortly.

I added a bunch of people just now. I did ok in my first online venture, I won the first race with 8 people and added 70 something points right away. Raced about 6 more times and ended up +170 something I think.Using automatic, how can you make it do the drift thing? I also need to figure out which character and vehicle to use, because everyone leaves me at the start. the boost start can be obtained by holding down the gas when the 2 is on the countdown and the dudes arm is about the 11 o'clock position. thats my cue anyway.
on Automatic, it drifts automatically. you dont get any boost though like oyu do in manual if you hold the drift for a while.

Played tonight for about 2 hours trying to star all the 50cc and 100cc grand prix races. Checked online about 9:30 CST and no one was on.Still a lot of fun but it gets more frustrating the deeper you get into it.....darn blue shells.

I bought this the day it came out and I've played it a few times. My nephew has unlocked some things for me. When we race, I always beat him, but he knows how to unlock stuff. I didn't even bother to ask him how he did it. I raced online once and got tooled. I guess I'm just not that into it :(

I really hate Rainbow Road and Wario's Gold Mine. Trying to star the last of the 150 cc cups and those two tracks fubar me every time so far. Get 45 points going into each of them and I cannot even get 2nd place to try to get at least one star on those cups. Ugh.

My least favorite is the new Bowser's Castle. Blue shells always come in right as I'm approaching an area where I can fall into lava. Wario's Gold Mine unnerves me, too.
I think the initial boost is overrated - you end up getting crappy items, and then you get bombarded from the other racers. YOu never jump out to a big lead - especially in 100 or 150 races. I try to hang back at the start and get a good item - Bullet if you can, or a golden mushroom to take a shortcut, then race your way towards the front before using the item. The downside is hanging on to the item too long, and getting hit by lightening. But, if you time it right, you can jump out to a good lead by the end of the first lap, and then hold on using the bananas as defenses.OK This makes sense, someone else mentioned 11 o'clock, but not his arm, I hit the gas when the entire light deal was at roughly the 11 position. Thanks for the help

Unlocked everything. I have starred every cup except the Mirror stages. Have not read up but does anything else get unlocked after starring the Mirror stages?
Oh well, still a great game. Next challenge is to pick another racer and try to go through the game with him/her. Daisy with the Dolphin bike is awesome.

Which races constitute the 50cc Retro races? I thought it was the first 2 of each row. I starred all those expecting to unlock the cheep charger, but no go. Do I need to star all the 50cc races to get it?
