***Official Milwaukee Brewers 2011 Thread*** (1 Viewer)

I was headed up to Wisco tonight for some weekend festivities.......I think I'll be pushing this out until tomorrow to avoid all of you drunken sconis on the road. I figure a good 65% of you will be done celebrating this by about 10:00 AM when I'm coming through. So at least I'll have a chance then.
Might want to push that back until 11:00 AM . . . . . . . . . . . Sunday

That didn't end well. In the end, the Brewers didn't play well enough to win a 3-game mid-summer series in Houston, much less the NLCS. The back end of the bullpen performed well and Wolf had a great outing but everybody else was inconsistent at best. There will be a lot of second guessing of the Lawrie-Marcum deal over the next seven years, but I think it's defensible for an organization to make a run when their window is open.

The expected loss of Fielder will hurt and the minor league cupboard is pretty bare, but there's still a decent core for at least the next year or two. It'll be a very interesting off-season to say the least.

Is the Plan B for 1B to give Mat Gamel a full-season look? He has been mashing here in Nashville the past few seasons.

He's 27 next year and has nothing left to prove in the minors. I have to assume he'll be given a shot at Fielder's job. The FA class for corner infielders consists of Pujols, Fielder and a bunch of nothing.

I still think Gamel can hit, even though he struggled this year when he was called up. The problem for Gamel is he's actually a downgrade in defense vs Prince. They really need to shore up the defense.

What are the odds the Brewers land Reyes? With the money freed up from Fielder (most likely) and not signing K-Rod (most likely) with the prospects of a cheap replacement in Gamel coming up, do the Brewers go after Reyes big time to get a lead off hitter? I don't know who is all up in free agency and such but going hard for Reyes seems like the best play, no?

Reyes' injury history makes him a high risk pick. I think he's a better fit for a higher payroll team that can withstand having a $20M guy on the DL.

Reyes/Weeks would make the most awesome dread-wearing double play duo in Major League history.

Brewers have several holes that need to be addressed

According to Michael Hunt of the JournalSentinel all they need is a new 3rd baseman, new SS, new 1st baseman, and new centerfielder. That's all. Only 4 of their 8 position players.

Scary thing, he's right.
On the flip side, how many MLB teams can say they're all set with a solid 5 man rotation + closer for next season?
That's true and because of this IMHO you'll see the 4 positions mentioned above filled with an emphasis on defense more so than offense. It will be an interesting off-season to see what Melvin and Roenicke do.

A local radio guy says the Brewers actually can afford but are intentionally not offering Fielder market rates because he's a risk for a long term contract due to his weight. Then the radio guy turns around and says don't be surprised if the Brewers sign Reyes. Funny thing is Prince never seems to get injured, while Reyes seems to always be injured.I tend to agree with Eephus. While the Brewers with their 3+ million attendance might be able to afford more than they let on, they cannot take the risk that 1/5 or their payroll is spent on a guy who misses a lot of games.

:goodposting: They're ok financially for 2012 but it starts to get tight in 2013. That's when some of these contracts start kicking in. Braun, Gallardo, Hart and Weeks will be pulling over $36 million alone in 2013. Hart's contract is up in 2014 and the other 3 then pull over $32 million alone. LINK

It will be interesting to see how Melvin approaches this offseason and how they build for the next few years.

If they get rid of Hart now... that is money saved. I think they can afford Prince but for the last month the announcers and Prince's demeanor all point to him leaving. Which is sad because I think that affected the way he played. I would like to see the Brewers go small and fast however that can be done. Get a quick infield with good defense but the base paths would be something to see. If they can get 3 or 4 guys that could come close to stealing ~50 or more bases next year that would be something. With the pitching set, go the way of the dodo and go small and fast. Braun, Weeks and someone else that could comes close to 30 HR's with a bunch of quick guys around them. Ah, dreams.

I also think that if the Brewers are no where in contention next year around the trade deadline, Marcum (if he holds up till then) and Greinke will be on the trading blocks. Not sure about Gallardo but I could see two getting traded especially if the Brewers do not resign them for a couple years before than.

Did Corey Hart poison your dog or something? He's been about a 4 WAR player and will cost the Brewers $20M over the last two years of his current contract. They could trade him and get value in return but that just opens up a different hole in the lineup.Milwaukee has been below NL average in SBs for the past three years. The last year they were above the mean was 2008; their top base stealer that year was Hart.
