***Official 2012 Milwaukee Brewers Thread*** (2 Viewers)

The hitting has fallen off a cliff. The starting pitching has been terrific. The hitting is the biggest letdown so far this season.

Trade and retool is something I was hoping to avoid but that looks the route they will have to take.

The Brewers need to do whatever possible to resign Greinke. The guy is money.

The only alternative is trading him for a king's ransom and I doubt any team is going to do that.

Posted this in FFA but no responses. Going to a brewers game for the first time next week looking for suggestions on best seat locations and things to do before and after the game. Anyone?

Just about anywhere in Miller Park is a decent seat. I personally don't care for the Terrace seats (upper deck) but they are cheap seats. If you are going to be in Milwaukee the week of the 4th check out Summerfest. Can be a bit crowded at times but a good time and great music.Summerfest

As long as Roenecke continues to run Ransom, Loe and Veras out there, I am firmly entrenched in the DONE club.

Are you effing kidding me? Runners on late in a tie game and you pinch hit Ransom for Morgan? Fine if you want a rightie why not use Gomez. Ransom???? Eff that guy, he couldn't even start in AAA.

Seems to me this is a Doug Melvin EGO trip. The guys they are running out there, Ransom, Veras, Loe, Parra etc, make me puke. You are telling me you can't bring up guys from the minors and let them learn on the job? They can't, CANNOT do any worse than what we have now.

Didnt know about summerfest, we will have to check that out! Thanks!

The squeeze play is one of the awesomest things ever when executed properly.

snore > There will be plenty of people scalping tickets outside of the stadium. Or you can walk up to the window. There should be plenty of seats available. Grab a cooler full of soda, beer, sandwiches etc and enjoy the tailgating before the game. Summerfest is a "must-do" for any visitor if you like food, music and beer. Bring plenty of Gold Bond to keep the bag nice and dry, however. It's steamy in Milwaukee this week.

And they're shutting Greinke down for the next 2 series. They're saying they want him to "recharge the batteries".

Interesting strategy with the trade deadline looming and while in the middle of 9 games against the 3 teams ahead of you in the division.

Where did you see/hear anything about "next two series"? Supposedly just not making normal start this Wednesday

Greinke supposedly also will skip the upcoming series in Cincinnati and return to the rotation in Philly. That would give him at least nine days off, so this sounds like more than just needing a bit of extra rest. You have to wonder if something more serious has happened.
Edit - Roenicke talks with the media around 4:30 central. I'll update if I hear anything of note.

We just met with Brewers manager Ron Roenicke to ask why Zack Greinke's next turn is being skipped and Roenicke basically said they messed up by pitching Greinke in three consecutive games -- two before the break, including a four-pitch effort before being ejected, and again Friday in the first game coming out of the break.

"We tried to do something with Zack that I think Zack thought was kind of neat and we thought would work," said Roenicke. "And it didn't work. He didn't pitch well that second day after he was thrown out and he didn't pitch well the other day.

"He didn't feel the same; he just didn't feel right. We kind of got him out of his routine. The all-star break didn't help because he also didn't have a bullpen in between that start (Friday). So, to try to get him back on track for the second half, and we know it's important for him to pitch well for us, we bumped him a start.

"Hopefully, we can get Zack back on his routine and pitching the way he can. But we felt this was the best way to do it, talking to him and talking to (pitching coach) Rick Kranitz about doing this. That's why we're doing this."

Roenicke noted how well Yovani Gallardo pitched Sundaty (one run in seven innings, 14 strikeouts) when given nine days between starts and hopes for similar results with Greinke. After being ejected in the first inning on July 7 in Houston for spiking a ball at first base near the umpire, Greinke said he'd like to start the next day but had an onerous first inning (three runs) and exited after throwing 66 pitches in three innings. Greinke then came back on regular rest Friday and allowed seven hits and six runs (five earned) in five innings against Pittsburgh.

Roenicke said Greinke wouldn't return until the second game in Philadelphia on July 24, which means he'll have 10 days between starts skipping the full turn. This is a costly lesson because Greinke won't pitch against St. Louis in this series or the upcoming series in Cincinnati, which the Brewers have said is important to trying to get back in the NL Central race.

Asked if Greinke approached him and said he wasn't feeling right, Roenicke said, "No, but when I asked him about his last start, he said he just didn't feel right. Whether it's fatigue from trying to pitch him that back-to-back day -- that first inning his second day back was a long inning -- and I think that inning messed him up a little bit as far as feeling good to go through that game well. He only went three innings.

"We still thought he would be fine coming back after the all-star break and we probably put too much on him, thinking he'd be fine, and he wasn't. This is our best way, after talking with him, on figuring out how to get him back on the right track. I think this is the right way to do it, just give him that start off and get him right again."

As for why skipping an entire turn for Greinke would help him get back in his routine, Roenicke said, "Because he can get the bullpens where he's lined up and rested, and then will start again. We didn't do that with his last one because of the all-star break. He played catch with his father-in-law in-between.

"It's really to give him a rest going into the second half. Obviously, we need this guy. We need all of our starters to pitch well."

We also requested to talk to Greinke about this situation and he obviously didn't want to say much about it. He kept asking what Roenicke said and said to go with that, almost giving the impression he wasn't on board with this decision.

"That sounds good with me," said Greinke.

When asked if he asked for more rest, Greinke replied, "Did he say I said that?"

When told that wasn't made clear by Roenicke, Greinke said, "OK, then that's what I have to say, too, then. I don't really have much to say about it. I'm just going with what they say. I'll hopefully come back pitching good, whenever I pitch next."

Asked how he thought the three games in a row affected him, Greinke said, "I don't know. Like I said, I don't have much to say about it. I'm just trying to get back pitching good again, help us win some games. Pretty much we talked about it and I said I was just going to go with what (Roenicke) said, so there's no mixed words. That's about it."

Asked if he thought it was a good idea to take the extra time off, Greinke said, "I don't know. I'm fine with it. I'm just going with whatever he said. I don't know why you've got to ask me. I say the same exact words that came out of his mouth, came out of mine."

Asked if he feels OK physically, Greinke only said, "Yeah."

This situation is damaging to the Brewers on two fronts. First, Greinke misses an entire start during a crucial part of the season, including one at home, where he has never lost. Second, it probably harms his value on the trade market, should the Brewers fail to get back in the race, because interested teams will wonder what's going on with him.

"These games are important but the more important thing is we need to get him pitching right," said Roenicke, who indicated the trade situation was considered. "He didn't pitch well that second day after he was thrown out and he didn't pitch well in his last outing. That's unusual because he's been really throwing the ball well. The longer range is more important than just bringing him back against St. Louis."

Bullpen has cost them how many games this year? Might very well be in first place with 50% of those wins. UGH!!!!

Grienke offer of 4 years/100 million is what I have heard.

I believe the stat is that they've lost 17 or so games on the opponents last at bat. Not to mention the 1 run deficits that turned into 3-4-5 run deficits. The bullpen has been awful. And that's probably being kind.Heyman had an article that the offer was 5/$100M or possibly even up to $112M, which is what Cain's extension was for.

Grienke to Angels for Segura plus some young pitchers.
John Hellweg 6'9" RHP 1.38 WHIP, 4.5 BB/9 & 6.6 SO/9 at AA ArkansasAriel Pena Dominican RHP 1.20 WHIP at Arkansas. Looks like he's been working on his command this year. Walks are down from nearly 5 per 9IP to 3.3 but he's been giving up over a HR per nine. Both are 23Segura isn't a bad return for two months of Greinke, particularly if he can field the position at SS. Melvin definitely gave up more to acquire Greinke two offseasons ago but the Brewers got their playoff run out of the deal as well.

What is the record for most blown saves in a season from a reliever? What is the record for most blown games from the 7th or 8th inning on? Brewers could be in first place with an average bullpen. Just sickening.

LOL, apparently you haven't watched the Reds play much this year, and yes, I'm well aware of the Crew's bullpen problems.

Hey, in case you haven't noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven't, the Brewers have managed to win a few here and there...

Don't think they have the horses to pull it off but they're only 6 games back in the wildcard.
