***OFFICIAL*** Minnesota Vikings 2015 Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Loved Teddy hitting Wallace on the 40 yard pass.. Perfect touch.. It just takes one pass completion like that to make defense's honor the deep play and should open the running game as well as the underneath routes.

Banyard and Bostick Among first cuts

Feeling is Banyard gets picked up very fast.. He has shown enough skills to warrant being on a squad.

Taylor Heinicke played well under the bright lights in Dallas and looks good enough to make the roster. Dominique Williams runs hard and might get the nod over Banyard if the Vikings keep 4 running backs.
I guess Zimmer said that the Vikings are likely to keep 3 QB.

Q: Do you feel like you’re committed to having three quarterbacks on the roster or is that going to be more fluid this year?

A: I assume that we’ll have three quarterbacks, but that’s not set in stone. The roster, when we get down to it in the 53, we’re going to try and keep the best 53 guys for this particular football team. That may be a fluid position.
I agree Heinicke played well and should make the team. Not sure if he would be safe passing waivers considering how many teams need QBs.

How's Teddy looking? Just grabbed him in the 15th as a backup. Going to be a huge jump forward?
He couldn't have looked much better in the preseason. Everyone seems to be predicting a breakout year. Even if that doesn't happen I think his floor is pretty high.

Talking Minnesota Vikings With Football Outsiders

3. Now that the insane brow-beating he took in the pre-draft process is in the past and we can all see how ridiculous it really was, what's the ceiling for Teddy Bridgewater, in your opinion?

The only thing more insane than fussing over preseason is fussing over pro days. Anyways, we can look at Bridgewater from both a numbers and scouting perspective. FO's Andrew Healy came up with a system from projecting college QBs to the NFL
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2015/introducing-qbasecalled QBASE
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2015/introducing-qbase, and his projections have Bridgewater falling roughly between the likes of

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2235/eli-manningEli Manning
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2235/eli-manningand Daunte Culpepper. QBASE isn't perfect (otherwise Bridgewater wouldn't have fallen so far in the first place), but I think that it's about right here: Bridgewater's median outcome is a second-tier quarterback capable of leading his team to relatively consistent postseason appearances. If he wants to raise his ceiling, he'll need to show more consistent accuracy at passes of all depths, in my opinion. Bridgewater may not ever be John Elway with the deep ball given his lack of plus arm strength, but he needs to hit the short and intermediate throws at a higher rate to make up for that. If the quarterback from the last six games is here to stay, I think Bridgewater's ceiling becomes a top-10 quarterback by the time he reaches his prime.

Norv: I Hope We Have Balance All The Way Across

On Mike Wallace Norv is asked if he is worried about the number of touches Mike Wallace has had thus far during preseason.

"We have an advantage in that we get to see him every day in practice. He's going against a really good secondary. Guys who get to see him over and over, it makes it harder to get open, it is like going and playing in your division the third year against teams that you play twice a year. Out here, you know, they see us, and know us, if we show a certain split, they have a pretty good idea of the route, if they hear a call, they have a pretty good idea of whats coming. He has still made a lot of plays out here. He is a guy where if he was a rookie, and hadn't made plays in games, you might say, well we got to see him do it in games, he is not in that category. He has played a lot better over the past two years than a lot of people give him credit for. If we get him to catch 65 balls with 10 touchdowns or 9 touchdowns I think he will make a great contribution and help our entire team.

On Taylor Heinicke.

"He's just getting the feeling for playing, understanding the speed, He's gotten a lot better with his feet, he's getting the ball out quicker. In the second half coverage is not as good, the defenses are not as sophisticated, but he, we can't control that, he has made plays that show he could develop into a guy that could be on a roster."

On Mike Harris.

"He played good for us last year. It doesn't surprise me. He has things he has to get better at, and every game you get on film, people are looking at ya, looking for things they can do to beat ya, so because he's so new to the position, he has a lot of work to do, but we have a whole lot of work that needs to be done with the offensive line before the opener, so he just has to come out here like Coach Zimmer said, and we have got to get better every practice, and we have to get something out of every practice we have."

On TJ Clemmings.

"Well the communication and all that is really good. I think they are two young players, in terms of Mike being new at the position, and TJ being a young player, but Jeff (Davidson) does a good job with them, breaking things down and teaching them what they need to get done. Theres challenges ahead for us, because again, people start attacking you in terms of your scheme and they start attacking personnel, and I don't think we have seen that yet.

He had gotten better in terms of his initial sets and technique, I think he is getting better every day, but like I just said, he has a long ways to go, and we have a long ways to as an offensive football team, as an offensive line, as a team. As Coach Zimmer says we have to get something out of every opportunity we have, whether it's a walk through or practice, pre-season game, because we're trying to catch up in some areas.

I like his athleticism, I like his toughness, his ability to compete, he's got long arms, he's not fazed right now, by the big picture, the game, you know it gets going pretty fast out there, he's not seemed to be a guy who's gotten rattled."

Asked about the running game.

"I think it is really difficult to make an assessment of the running game in preseason. It has not been something that we have gone into any of these preseason games and said, we're going to go run the football, we're going to run the ball 25 times in the first half and you know, get this done. We've tried to do enough things in all areas to evaluate our players, and give them a chance to function in a lot of different areas.

We're going to be a good running football team, we developed into a pretty good running team last year. I like Matt and I like Jerrick, and obviously we're anxious to get Adrian back, we had him for one game last year and we ran the ball pretty good in that game."

Norv thinks the left side of the offensive line has played very well. He mentions Berger being a player they can rely on at a lot of different spots if/when needed. That Davidson teaches the offensive line multiple positions and does a great job at that.

On Kyle Rudolph.

I think Kyle has had a good camp. There's always things that we're working on to get better. He understands what those things are. For minutes played and the opportunities that he's had I think he's done a good job in the passing game, he's working hard in the running game, when you play against some of the big defensive ends, you get some tough match ups, and we haven't really game planned to help avoid those match ups. Kyle has gotten himself ready to have a really outstanding year, and everyone gets caught up with numbers, I hope we don't have a guy who gets a lot of numbers more than the other. I hope we're balanced all the way across, we have a lot of guys who make plays, and I hope they all have a chance to contribute. That will make us a better offense."

Asked about depth on offense.

"Obviously without Adrian last year, that changed the whole running back outlook, we have a lot more depth with our runners, we have depth at tight end, right now we have four guys that we feel can play, we have depth at wide receiver, the area where we are extremely thin is at offensive line. I think we have a lot of positives, we just need to have a little luck up front.

Asked about David Yankey and Austin Shepherd.

"We're working on that right now. This game will be another opportunity for those guys to show themselves playing. I think both of them have had highlights and bright spots and both have had struggles, so we are just continuing to coach them and help them get better, and then continue to evaluate them."

"We're looking for consistency. If they can play well for two or three games in a row, then six or seven, then maybe play well for nine or ten games in a row. That's common, That's what you have to work on with young guys up front. Particularly as I said, those guys have a lot of challenges, with multiple looks, a lot defenses are doing a lot of different things to make it hard for an offensive line.

Duron Carter was cut by the Colts. Funny how we were pumped up about potentially signing back in February. That has to be tough for him to take as only $25k was guaranteed.

I also just saw Ponder was cut loose by the Raiders. I'm guessing someone will sign him as a backup.

I have been really impressed with Edmond Robinson. Very athletic and I think has a future as a contributor after Greenway is gone.

Also great to see the depth in the defensive backfield for a change, especially with the QB/WR in the division!!

I thought both Banyard and Williams looked good and I would have kept either over Zach Line.

Williams seems perhaps a bit more powerful than Banyard, but they played pretty close to the same level from what I could see.

Great to hear that Williams had interest from other teams yet still chose to stay with the Vikings. Another team could still swoop Williams up at any point if they were willing to add him to their active roster.

It will be interesting to see what they do after the first two games when Jabari Price comes back off of his suspension...I thought he played really well this preseason. Of course injuries could happen but assuming all stay healthy...

I wish they would have kept Mauti and cut Line...playing Ellison at FB when needed.
I kinda agree, but it is a sign of how much improved our LB corps are that Mauti was expendable.
Mauti was picked up by the Saints on waivers, so they seem to think he is worth a roster spot.
And just because one team values a player enough for a roster spot doesn't mean he should have stayed on another team's roster. Value is relative to the other players on the roster. I also would have preferred Mauti to Line, but we have to trust the team to know what they are doing. And we don't have access to the same information they do.

Of course they do. :oldunsure: j/k

Mauti was only a special team contributor for the Vikings while Line contributes there as well. Mauti wasn't going to crack the LB rotation at all, so having a special teamer that contributes in another position not as deep as LB makes more sense for the Vikings at this time.

I feel good about this team. Hope they make a statement game against the 49ers.

Vikings are already losing their sleeper status. They are already being picked for the WC spots for the NFC. I know I have drank the purple koolaid, but was hoping the Vikes would stay under the radar a bit longer. I'm really looking forward to this season - I was hedging at around 9 wins, but thinking now 10 may be possible. I thought they might flirt with the playoff spot for a couple weeks, now I'm thinking that last game against Green Bay may actually be a vital game for both teams. I'm not thinking they are a deep playoff team this year, but they are built for it if the pieces all fall right.

Norv: Despite Losses, 49ers Present Tough Test

Norv:

We have a lot of different playmakers on this team and we want to get everyone involved.

Joe had an outstanding camp. He has played guard he has played center. Hes kind of the leader of that group right now, while we're getting Sully ready to go. He's a valuable guy to us, that why we wanted him back and I think he will do well if he has to go.

We have gotten better, a lot better on the left side, those are veteran guys, they are comfortable with each other, and I think we're improved on the left side. The right side is making progress every day, we have a postion change guy and a young guy, but they have responded. We did a good job of protecting the QB in the preseason, we need to continue to be able to do that and we need to be able to run the ball.

Sullivan will not need a lot of time to get ready mentally, it's a day to day thing as far as where he is at physically.

Zach Line is our starting fullback. He showed us he is quick to the target, He's a physical player, and he is a very good athlete, so he stays on blocks, there are not many plays where his guy made the tackle. In terms of what we're doing, we're not a big 2 back, FB in the game team, but it's something we need to be able to do. We need to be able to do it in our base personnel, we need to do it in our short yardage and goal line, theres so many things, that you end up with two TE and 2 backs in the game. Backed up, 4 minute, theres a lot of different times you use that personnel group. So he's valuable to us.

On Zac Kerin - Norv thinks if he is needed to play center in the game, that he is ready to go.

What makes Charles Johnson stand out against all the other WR on the team?

He's a bigger person than people realize. He's a 218lbs hes a long arm guy, he has great reach. I thought he played great in the second half of last season and he has improved a great deal over that. Just being comfortable with what we're doing. And he can run. All the things you can say about guys, defensive backs feel speed. And when a guy can run, he changes the way they defend him.

These guys starting in April have worked as hard as any group I've been around and Zimmer has pushed them extremely hard, we always tell them you do all this stuff from April until when you get going in September for 16 weekends. I think everyone is anxious to get going. We want to be an offense that gives your team a chance to win. Some times that means wide open some times it means being smart and executing your offense.

Can Rhett Ellison be a guy who can step in and play fullback for you?

Yeah. He's played full back. It brings a new dimension when he's in there, but yeah he can do that.

You have had two offseasons with Adrian Peterson to work with him as a pass cather, how would you assess him right now? We haven't had a chance to see that.

I think he caught four balls in that game against St. Louis and he did a good job. The thing that is hard, Adrian can catch the ball really well, and theres certain routes he catches better than the others, it does change when it's in games and everything is 100 miles an hour, but I expect him to be a productive receiver for us and I really think he is going to have the opportunity to make big plays in the passing game, if we're getting the ball spread around to everyone else. It's hard to cover everybody.

Is there one play that stands out from Teddy, as far as the pre snap recognition through the execution?

Theres a lot of plays. It's hard. Probably the deep ball to Mike Wallace in the Dallas game, because we had a lot of different things going on that play. We were on the road and it was loud. He was changing plays at the line, and we come up with a big play. So those are the things he has to be able to do.

MyCole Pruitt.

We're finding that out (big smile). Unfortunitly he missed two weeks, but he started fast in the offseason, and training camp and preseason. I think he's healthy, this is the first week hes been back healthy and he played a little bit in the game the other night, and as I said he was stumblin and bumblin around a little bit, but he is going to be a good player. He is going to add to our offense. How much we can use him, we'll see. But he is a big physical player, hes a good blocker and hes a good receiver. We have a number of good young players and he is one of them.

Asked about Charles Johnson size.

He plays. Hes a lean guy who maybe doesn't look as big as he is. I know some people have described him as not being a physical guy, going to the ball, but I think he does that and I think hes done it better this camp than he did a year ago. He's got a long reach. Like that play against the Raiders where he reached out and caught the ball in the back of the end zone. He has made a number of catches out here where when the ball is thrown you think theres no way he can get to it, but he reaches out and gets it one handed, or gets two hands on it. He does have a good catch radius.

Do you think your catching San Francisco at an opportune time?

The first game of the season is always a challenge. Because they have a new defensive coordinator, I'm looking at it from our stand point, he obviously has a track record in the NFL in Mangini, I thought they played very well in the preseason, they were very sound, they did not give up a lot of big plays. So we have to prepare for what we are looking at on tape. I know people are talking about the players they lost, but looking at them, they still have a group of guys, play at a high level and play extremely hard, and as I said, they don't give up a lot of big plays, so you have to be able to put together a ten, twelve, fourteen play drive and you have to be sharp. Sometimes in the first ballgame thats harder to do, to get into a rhythm, so I think they are a pretty good defense.

Is there any hope for Patterson this year? It seems like his value is hitting rock bottom as I bought him for $3 last night in my auction ($200 total cap). Maybe it's a waste of $3...

I'll tella why you have a chance to go to the SB this year - because you'll have playoff games outside. Get there, and it'll be Bud Grant time all over again. I still say y'all are nuts for building indoors. Good luck.

I think there is some hope for him.

In the recent press conference above, when Norv Turner is talking about getting all of their players involved in the passing game, this was in reference to a question about Diggs and Patterson.

Patterson has been playing at the Z WR position more this offseason, which I think is a better fit for his skillset. Now he still has Wright and Wallace ahead of him in that and the slot WR roles, but I think there will be some plays specifically designed for Patterson and he will get some opportunities. Likely not enough to be worth starting in FF without an injury.

If Mike Wallace does not play well, this could open up more opportunity for Patterson.

Adrian Peterson being back will draw a lot of defensive attention, which should free up Patterson on some of the jet sweeps and other constraint plays. Without Peterson on the field Patterson was one of the defenses main keys. That should not be the case as much with Peterson on the field.

What is Teddys ceiling, compared to say Tyrod Taylor???
Quite a bit lower, I'd say. Not as an NFL QB, of course, where I think Teddy will be excellent for years. But for FF, this year.

Tyrod's going to be a much, much bigger rushing threat, which almost automatically puts you above all but the elite passers. Teddy's very modest rushing should get even more modest with AP on the field. And Norv has shown pretty conclusively over the years that when he has an All-Pro level talent to lean on at RB, he prefers to do that rather then pass very aggressively, which will probably mean Teddy's hard pressed to get to 4k. Should be a super-efficient 3750/25/12 type year, with very little rushing bump, IMO.

But I think he'll be awesome for the Vikes.

FWIW we both projected Teddy for the same number of passing yards Freelove.

Actually after checking I am slightly higher in passing yards for Teddy than you are.

My projection for him on June 25 in the Bridgewater thread.

2015 3555-3634-3719 passing yards 23-24TD 7-9 Interceptions.

257 rushing yard

This assumes 40 sacks. Bridgewater took 39 sacks in 12 starts last season. I definitely can see the sacks being lower than this and there is upside for Teddy to throw for 4000 yards. But for that to happen I think either the defense has failed to improve from last season and/or the running game is ineffective.

I calculated the fantasy points for Bridgewater with the above numbers to be 262 points. Which was similar to what Joe Flacco scored last season where he finished as QB 13. The upside is there for him to become a low end QB 1 level this season.

In 2016 I think Bridgewater will improve again, and will be pretty solidly be a QB1 to good QB2 type value in draft then.

All sounds ok to me.

I think Bridgewater has the skills necessary to be a very good FF QB, but for the time being, I think he's going to be hamstrung a bit by his system...unless something happens to AP. That, historically, would be the sort of reason Norv would choose to start airing it out.

That was absolutely embarassing .. :yucky: :X They got beat everywhere..

OL couldn't stop the rush or open any holes for the running game.

DL was constantly over running the plays.. Lost count how many times Griffen got left in the dust as he tried to go inside to stop Hyde and not hold the outside.

Nice job by Norv on using Peterson.. :sarcasm:

Either Peterson wasn't in Football shape or Norv was trying to be clever and use him as a decoy.. 10 carries and I think each one was up the middle.. Nice job Norv, thinking that OL was going to open holes.

Most Offensive coaches at some point would realize the 49ers are blitzing, and the OL is NOT stopping them, maybe we should roll Teddy out, or call a Screen pass.. But not smart old Norv.. Stick to the game plan..

I thought Teddy did the best he could.. But appartely Zimmer didn't as he "threw him under the bus"

Considering how the Ol couldn't keep the defenders out of his face and how crappy the Gameplan was, he did his best to survive back there.

He showed great accuracy and touch on his deep pass to Wallace in the end zone... How that wasn't called interference I'll never know. Too bad he never had time again behind the OL to try going deep again..

The Defense for some reason was setup to stop the pass and not the run.. I have no idea what they were thinking.. Should have had 7 guys on the line and forced Kapernick to beat us with his arm..

and why was there no spy on Kapernick?? Almost everytime he'd drop back to pass, the middle of the field was open.. no defenders to be seen.

Zimmer has a LOT of work to do as right now 5-11 would be a miracle if they keep playing this way.

I was in no way prepared for them to play this poorly. It's hard to see them doing anything with this o-line. I had high hopes for this season but now I don't know.

Wow. That escalated quickly. I knew the offense might be suspect with our line issues, but the defense?!?! It really looks like this team regressed significantly. Hopefully last night was a one-off event; at least for the defense.

UGLY.

That's all there is to it.

I don't think there was even one aspect of the game that we can come away saying the team performed well there. This was as poorly a coached and played game I've seen in 10 years with this team. Really thought our days of being unprepared and out-hustled were behind us, but I guess not. Zimmer can lay blame all around if he wants, but it truly starts right there with him. This team wasn't ready for the physicality of the 9ers and it showed.

Don't know what can be done for our Oline at this point. Hoping our Dline will play better after Griffin and Hunter are taught to fight through the ####### block on the edge instead of jumping inside.

Greenway needs to retire yesterday. If not, Zimmer needs to have the balls to sit him. He's not fast enough for the game anymore.

The offense put the defense on the field too much too soon and they showed early-season conditioning.

The o-line will be a season long issue (or at least until Sullivan returns) and I hope they don't end up David Carr-ing TB.

1 game, on the road, at an unusual start time which can lead to irregular play. No sugar coating how they looked, but seems too soon to draw significant conclusions. How they respond this week will be telling, IMO.

Maybe, but they looked disorganized and out of synch in pretty much every aspect of the game. It's not like you could point to the offense or defense or this guy or that one. Not hitting the panic button and I'm sure a lot of teams had opening day dysfunction-ality, but jeezo they looked out of sorts.

I'd venture a guess Peterson's lack of usage was a combination of the line not giving him much to work with, his dancing with the stars auditioning running and desperation of trying something that worked in the ground game to take the heat off TB. I didn't recall seeing Patterson in the game plan. I would think in a game where the defense was blowing through their line like that, a few Patterson screens would help/couldn't hurt.

It kind of looked like AP didn't know what he was doing out there. That might explain why he was on the sidelines towards the end of the first half. Teddy kept having to tell him where to line up and they didn't seem to be in sync at all.

Its only week 1... Lets hope they do better against the Lions this week.

I see now where a Vikings fan was beaten and repeatedly kicked while down outside of the 49ers game. Bad night for that particular Viking's fan. I hope he was a san Francisco area resident. Imagine paying to travel to a game, watching that mess, and then getting stomped on top of it all. Tough, tough night.

The defense needs to get off blocks and stop the run. I think the 9ers could have run with Hyde on every single play and they would have been able to sustain 1st downs. No one was getting off blocks and the LB are too slow to react to the play.

I am not sure why Sendejo started or if he was hurt at some point? Because Blanton was in there later in the second half. The safeties were not much help against the run. If they were not covering they were getting blocked.

I saw players give up too much as well, once he ball carrier was past them, not much effort to make pursuit even after getting of a block.

This is the worst I've seen Bridgewater play. He was very inaccurate early on. He seemed to settle down as the game went on but then pass protection broke down causing some more errant throws because of the pressure and some sacks.

Fusco and Berger failed to pick up A gap blitzes. On Teddys first sack Fusco helps Kalil double team the end and Berger blocks no one as the defensive back who was already near the gap before the snap was clearly a threat to rush there. No one picks him up.

Kalil completely missed one block that I noticed but generally he and Harris I thought did ok in pass protection.

Clemmons failed on run downs to control his man, letting the defender play off him too either side pretty well. He also failed in pass protection multiple times. On one play Bridgewater is scrambling Clemmons is standing in his way and caused him to get sacked instead of being able to escape and extend the play.

The way Berger looks before he snaps gives the defense a way to time the snap of the play.

Peterson does not look comfortable running out of the shotgun on draw plays.

Jerick McKinnon had a few good runs after the catch, Peterson didn't do as well in this area with his receptions.

Peterson did look good at times. But they never really committed to getting him going in my opinion. They started off with play action for example.

Because of not stopping the run there were few offensive opportunities. The interception did not help matters either.

Pretty disappointed in the way the Vikings played, especially on defense.

Zimmer explained it in his presser today. Said he started Sendejo because he's usually in the right place and makes tackles that should be made. When Sendejo made some early mistakes being out of place, he figured he'd play the guy who may be out of position but can make big plays.

Bridgewater admitted to be too excited to start the game.. and I agree, by the time he settled down, the 49ers were bringing 6 or 7 and he had no time to set..

Still a :whoosh: to me why Norv didn't call more Screens and draw plays to slow them down.. The best "defense" against a rushing defense that the OL can't stop are draws and Screens... yet Norv was insistent on keeping to the Game Plan..

I thought the Lions played into the strength of the Vikings defense that was able to use different variations of nickle packages most of the game.

Occasionally they deployed a 3 lineman with 3 linebacker look that had Robison, Joseph Griffen Hodges Barr and Kendricks. I somewhat wonder about this because then Floyd is off the field in exchange for Hodges. I think Floyd provides some of the best pressure from the defensive line.

More often they were using 4 linemen.

The Vikings got to the QB a lot hitting Stafford early and getting in his head. The Vikings had 8 QB hurries and also 8 passes defensed. A lot of those came at the LOS, Robison had two and there was the interception by Justin Trattou.

Peterson did well aside from the fumbles. I think he is still a but rusty and getting the feel for the offense.

The offensive line played quite a bit better. Clemmons was mostly used to help double team Ngata leaving the DE for a TE to block. There were a few plays where they had swing tackle Austin Shepherd in as a TE and a few with MyCole Pruitt as well.

Happy with the improvement. I think Peterson really wants to score a TD after having a couple opportunities stolen from him.
