Right? Lack of communication in such a critical situation.

Has Roberts EVER gone to the mound and not removed the pitcher?

Send the pitching coach out like every other time you need to have words.

.... or give Hill the wait signal (index finger or "stop" hand) as you approach the mound.

or put your arm out to prevent him from walking off the mound.

I think that Hill handing him the ball signaled to Roberts that Hill was tired (when he was not)

Although I hate the Red Sox it was good to see a pair of Gamecocks win the ALCS MVP and the World Series MVP.

In game 2 of the 2013 ALCS Leyland took out Scherzer after 7 1/3 up 4 runs, in a 5-1 game where he was awesome.  Bullpen loaded bases and Ortiz hit the grand slam to tie.  Tigers would have gone up 2-0 headed back to Detroit and that series was over.  That is the most painful game ever for me, this game had the same script.

Only thing I can think about being pissed about is the fact that Dave Roberts' contract is up, so the end of his employment with the Dodgers won't be a proper firing. 

 
I know Kershaw showed up small again but in reality how much does this guy even have left in the tank?  I believe his fastball was down significantly this year (at least after the injury) so he’s relying on off speed stuff.  Now he’s a master at his craft so he will probably still last a while but I’m wondering if he’s still an ace next year.  I think we are seeing the beginning of a decline.

I didn’t watch last night but it seemed like in his first game he was topping out at 91. I thought he looked awful. Was just tossing junk up there. 

 
Dont really understand the Roberts hate - after all, an NLCS & two World Series in a 3-yr career is nothing to sneeze at, especially considered against the ups & downs of more talented NL teams in Chi & Wash - but i know the syndrome all too well.

My first (and what i thought would be last) year taking care of me Ma was John Farrell's first season as Sox mgr. I'd watch the games - she never misses one - with her to give her solace and just could not believe how insufferably inept Farrell was and that feeling never changed thru winning it all that year. Ma got better and neither baseball nor senility hold up well thru extended exposure, so i stopped watching every game with her and frankly got tired of explaining that her team wasn't living up to expectations because of the bum running it all, so no one was more thrilled than i when Farrell got his walking papers. Our reward was finding a guy who knows the zone in between making players do stuff and letting players do stuff under which everyone can flourish and it was an honest-to-God pleasure watching the Sox find strength in their weaknesses that turn the daily grind from burden to opportunity. We Bostonians have it better right now with our coaches/mgrs than any sports fan ever has and i hope you Angelenos find the same, tho i fear we'll dispatch you as summarily next time too. See you next year -

Probably the best Red Sox team to win a World Series this century, and certainly an impressive playoff run, but they probably weren’t even better than last year’s Astros.

Stats can be somewhat misleading at times (shocking, I know). With a month left to go in the season, they had an 11 and a half game lead against the Yankees and I believe a 10 game lead on Houston for the league's best record. At that point, they led MLB in run differential.

Boston really had nothing to play for and come September, they started giving guys more rest, playing bench players a lot more,  inserting a couple of minor leaguers, etc. They finished the year 10-10. Houston, on the other hand, faced a charge from Oakland right up until the last week of the season. They had plenty to play for and ended up 21-6 in September to hold off the Athletics.

I never figured out why computer projections and probabilities don't factor in any of that. I remember at the time that BOS effectively had put away the AL East and were going to win home field advantage, they were decent favorites to win the WS on sites like 538. Then they took their foot off the gas to rest players, tinker with their rotation, etc. and the Astros suddenly became the team to beat based on recency bias in the computer models, algorithms, and formulas. Not sure why they do things the way they do them, but so be it.

As you said, their Pythagorean win total was projected at 103 wins. Houston's was 109 wins and the Dodgers at 102. In the end, Boston went 119-57, HOU 107-63, and LA 98-78 including the post season. None of that matters at this point, but interesting to see in hindsight the difference between the regular season and the post season. Certainly no one could have predicted that Boston would become uber clutch as a team with 2 outs, nor could people have expected their bullpen to turn into one of their biggest strengths (and David Price would turn things around).

 
I just find it amazing that a team that won 108 games and beat two one-hundred win teams in the post-season isn't "one of the best" ever.

IMO the 2004 team was more talented but this team played better. Played well from the start of the season to the end. Dominated in the playoffs against the toughest competition. Any time the opponents made mistakes they'd take advantage. Played solid fundamental baseball, were clutch, and even smartly managed which has certainly been uncommon in the 50+ years I've been a fan.

Seems pretty simple.

The tanking culture that is prevalent in the current MLB environment makes for inflated win totals. The bottom half of the AL was particularly awful this year as 5 teams dropped 95 or more games. That's one more than the total of AL teams with 95 loses or more from the 2014-2017 seasons combined.

Depends on what you mean by one of the best ever? I think you would be crazy to argue they were top 5 all time. Just like I think somebody would be crazy to argue they aren't in the best 30 all time. So what threshold we talking here?

Likely yours. No way are they top five. No way aren't they top thirty. That's a double negative, for sure, just like baseball or Linus. You can "not not" be something. This year's Red Sox are not not one of the best teams to ever exist.

Not sure what's so difficult to understand. He's saying they should be ranked somewhere between 5th best and 30th best all time.

He's closer to a JAG now than he is elite.  Not being able to go upstairs and overpower guys with his fastball really hurts him.

I agreed with him. "Likely yours" meant likely your scenario. I think he's correct. I think the '27 Yanks, etc., were better, though no all-white team could ever be better, frankly.  But that is a different issue for a different day and why we wear pins with "42" on them. 

And, yeah, it needed to be said.  

 
Yeah I’m not pissed the Red Sox won, they have a bunch of former Tigers. Plus Dave Roberts cost me $$$ in fantasy baseball this year with his stupid lineups and the Dodgers have a ridiculous payroll. 

I only said they weren’t one of the best teams ever, because they aren’t. But they were the best team this year and the AL had 4 really excellent teams, just winning the pennant was quite an accomplishment.

The Dodgers' payroll was under the CBT threshold this year.  Boston had a pricier roster even excluding Rusney Castillo's millions who isn't even on the 40 man.

The Giants' payroll was higher than LA's but since it's the off-season, I won't go on about that.

According to 538 and their ELO ratings, the 2018 Red Sox rank as the 18th best team since 1903.

Licensed Sales have been horrific...much worse than any in recent memory and the ‘13 Sox.

Multiple titles certainly an influence...boring win too though, as similar Pats and Bama Champs have been strong after dramatic wins. Also, retail landscape is different...no TSA, no Bobs...but other retailer or online sales just aren’t picking up the difference in this case.
