It's not crawfish season, so you might be out of luck on that one...

 
Frenchmen Street for live music?

Also at some point, going to have to check out Pres Hall just because I need to pay my respects. I will buy an overpriced ticket to avoid the tourist trap lines imo.

See the rebirth at the Maple leaf or Walter Wolfman Washington

Find where Kermit Ruffins is playing or Trombone shorty

Go to a show at Tipitinas but not the House of Blues

Ok yall. Its been a few years since i have been to NOLA. Headed down for 5 nights and trying to get my food itinerary in order.

My definite visits are:
Dooky Chase
Cochon
Cochon Butcher
McClure's BBQ
Acme Oyster House
Emerils
Dantes

Also in the running are some of my favorites:
Irenes
Jacques-Imo's
Coops
Luke
K-Pauls


I have a list of restaurants that i haven't been to that i hear are good and this is what i need help with:

Any feedback on these would be very helpful. Of this last group what are must visits? ive heard great things about Clancys and Compère Lapin. Casamentos looks like an interesting lunch visit. Dragos ive been meaning to try for a while now. And Herbsaint and August im hearing great things.

HerbSaint - good, not great IMO....but many people think it's great.

Restaurant August - Would definitely recommend, especially if you're going with significant other
Casamentos - I think it's overrated, especially for being out of the way...can get better food downtown
dragos - would go here over Acme definitely

See above for my opinions....looks like you have a solid list overall.

If you haven't been to http://www.revolutionnola.com/restaurant_revolution_menu.html, I would recommend trying to work that in.

Haven't been to Shaya, but have heard nothing but great things and it's next on my list.

I've been to all those, I will try to post more later but up front I think I'd move Coops and Acme down. Yes on both if you're drinking in Bourbon or lower quarter, but they're not food destinations IMO.

I'd also move Lapin down, it's hot, it's new, it's good, but it's not on the list of pantheon restaurants Im sending people to when they're still diving into NO. I still like Patois as a relatively newer restaurant. And I agree with R'evolution maybe even above that because it has a more inventive menu.

very helpful.  thanks.  Maybe ill just do acme as a pre dinner happy hour thing instead of dinner then.  Will look into Patois as well. 

 
That list needs more Coquette.

And if you do make your way out to Casamento's, the coffee shop next door to it makes the best cold brew coffee in the city, if you're into that.

Good call, they roast their own beans. New Orleans is one of the great US coffee towns, but for some reason few places actually roast their own.

Ha is not a big place though.

If you do Nola Brewery try Friday, it's a free beer tasting, though these days I think they limit you to two cups. Going upstairs is worth it especially this time of year.

They were doing good work with their roaster there.  The seats out front are prime uptown people-watching seats.  A good friend of mine is one of the owners, and I got a lifetime royalty going on out there because I came up with the name for the cafe when they took it over.

Ha, did you now. That's awesome. Very cool, I pop in there every so often when I can, the only complaint I have is the parking but of course the coffee is great.

Not sure I know how to answer this, they're always just around. When you get them might be more important than where you get them. - If you're traveling to NO and are downtown/FQ I think I would suggest giving Mr. Ed's in the Quarter a shot.

If you're talking about boiled crawfish, I've literally never bought them at a restaurant and couldn't tell you the last time I've bought them in a seafood market as we always boil our own.

 
gents.  any suggestions on stuff to do during the day?  Any cool day trips?  was thinking maybe baton rouge or hitting up the abita brewery. 

Also are there any formal festivities for st pattys day?  will be in town for st pattys through the weekend.

Baton Rouge not worth going to IMO. I've heard the swamp tours are pretty cool.  If you're a history guy, the WW2 museum is really great.  Just walking around the french quarter (royal street specifically) is pretty cool.  They have historical bike tours which is nice if the weather is good (like it should be today).  

Abita recently enhanced their tour and I've heard good things, but just know you'd be driving 45 minutes (assuming you're staying downtown) for only about an hour tour.  

 
Just finishing up a short trip to New Orleans with a larger group of guys.

Solid advice in the thread.

Couchon was fantastic.

Bourbon House was good enough for what it is.

Went for some McClures for lunch today. Ribs were great. Sauces were all good. All the sides we tried were good except for the beans. BBQ poutine was also really good. Beers on tap at NOLA Brewhouse were great too.

The wife and I had a great long weekend trip for the 1st weekend of Jazz Fest.  The 1st day, we planted ourselves at the front of the SRO area at the Acura stage all day in advance of Pearl Jam playing.  She held down the fort while I went out for food, drinks and to chat with TF :bye:   I joined her for good halfway through the day as it was getting tougher to get through the crowd back to her.  Thankfully, there were water vendors passing through in front of us at the back of the VIP area.  Despite the crowd, all of those around us were great friendly folks.  I thought it was well worth the effort to camp out there all day, but my wife might disagree given the warm sunny day.  We finished off the day with another great meal at Palace Cafe.  We chose to eat the upstairs bar given the time and lack of reservations.  While the food was as good as expected, the service wasn't quite as impressive.

On Sunday, we wandered around the festival before settling in mid-afternoon in the new bleachers at the back of the Acura stage field.  While locals might be used to bringing chairs, blankets, etc and setting up shop in the field, these bleachers are a great option if you don't want to fight the crowds.  Tip - circle around the track and enter the bleachers from behind.  There were still paths to cut through the field when we did, but I'm not sure about later on in the day.  Easy access to drinks and portajohns behind the bleachers and a nice breeze that you might not feel as much down in the field.  Sound was not an issue either.  People did have a tendency to sit down even during the RHCP set which was odd, but obviously, there were all types of fans there too.  That night, we tried SoBou (ate at bar again).  I had the foie gras burger which was very good if not large.  Some very tasty cocktails there too.  Good vibe.

Finished out the rest of our trip some old favorite meal spots...nothing too noteworthy.  My wife insists on going to Port of Call which is fine with me simply because she's a picky drinker and their Monsoon/Windjammer is guaranteed to make her tipsy which always tickles me.  Only regret (besides having to leave) was not making to Tipsy's, but we didn't venture out of the FQ except for the festival given our short time there.

Thinking about scheduling the next trip down for MG "Lite" next February with the kids.

 
Heading out to New Orleans for Week 1 to watch my Raiders vs. the Saints. Will be flying in Thursday night arriving at 2300 and leaving Monday.

Will be going out there with the GF and it's both of our first times. I haven't look through the thread yet, but what's a good place to stay at? Looking through Kayak and the cheapest hotels within 1 mile of the French Quarter (I assume this is where a couple who wants to party should stay)  are:

Royal St. Charles $107/night

Best Western Plus St. Christopher Hotel $103

DoubleTree by Hilton $105

Hampton Inn & Suites New Orleans Downtown (Carondaelet St) $121

Omni Royal Crescent Hotel $127

Sheraton New Orleans Hotel (Canal St)  $130

Any of these hotels better than the others with primary factor being location and amenities being secondary? Any tips are appreciated. Thanks.

All of these are pretty centrally located...and seem to be pretty good deals.  All of them are an easy walk to the french quarter and a little bit further of a walk to the warehouse district (with the exception of the DoubleTree, which is flip flopped).

With primary factor being location, I would probably go with the Hampton Inn & Suites.  I've stayed there before, the rooms are nice and it's not crazy big where you're going to be in big lines for coffee in the morning, etc.  Not sure if it matters, but there is no bar in the hotel (there's one right next door)....if you want the bar in the hotel,  I would go with the Sheraton.

You'll have easy access to cabs/busses/street car/uber from any of them

Ended up getting a room at Sheraton New Orleans through Priceline's "name your price." Placed a $100 offer and it was accepted.... $488 for 4 nights ($122/night) after taxes and fees. The prices above didn't have the taxes and fees included so this saved me $100 (Hampton would have cost $590 after fees or $627 if I booked Sheraton w/o naming my price). The trip so far is off to a good start.

Does Tipsy still run Dante's?

From the looks of it I want to check out Cafe Du Monde, ACME, and McClures for sure. Either Dante's or Jacques-Imo Cafe, possibly both.

Any more updates from the local folks on good places to eat to "New Orleans" cuisine?

Trip isn't until September so I've got plenty of time ot research.

You are right beside the JW Marriott on Canal where I basically lived for about 5 years.  You are right across the street from the Palace Cafe, one of the Brennan restaurants.  So many places from which to choose - depends on what you really want.  Lots of eating discussed in here earlier.  My favorites:

August - my favorite, is right behind the casino and a 3 minute walk

R'evolution - in the Quarter and a 5 minute walk - really, really good 

Can't go wrong with hitting the bar at Dragos by the river for char-grilled oysters - just a couple minute walk from the casino.

I was actually thinking of updating the original post sometime over the summer.  probably some outdated info...and there's been a ton of restaurant openings over the past few years.

ETA: That's a great deal for that hotel.

Unless you guys are high end cocktail snobs, I wouldn't necessarily schedule the bachelor party around it specifically.  But if it happens to be the weekend that you come, it wouldn't hurt.  I've been to a few of the events before, and they're just ok IMO.  Much more to do around the city.
