That's a crazy trade.  That Calgary was able to come out of this with a legit MVP candidate and a top young defenseman, plus a 1st round?  Jeebus.

they kicked the can a bit.  weegar and huberdeau are both UFA, so if they aren’t signing long term, they are gonna be trade dead line fodder.

Huberdau is going to be a 30-year old UFA in a year. That's not going to be an easy contract negotiation. They may need to flip him at the deadline to avoid another Gaudreau scenario. I wonder how much teams will pay for him as a rental.

Weegar is a legit top-pair defensemen. I assume he'll be easier to sign to an extension.

The 1st round pick is in 2025.

It looks good now, but it's risky given the limited control they have.

But then they pile up 4/5 more first-round picks then. Seems like a total win to me for the Flames.

This could backfire for Calgary if they are cruising along again all season, don’t trade the players because the team is so good and then get trucked in round 2 again and then can’t sign these guys but otherwise this is an excellent get for them.

Calgary was willing to pay Tkachuk though, it's just that he didn't want to sign there.  Maybe Huberdau will feel the same way but I would hope Calgary was able to talk to him/his agent and at least get a feel for it.

Giving an 8-year deal to a 24yo is different  than giving one to a 30yo.

I imagine term will be a sticking point. If they give him what he wants, not sure it will end well.

Sure, if they give him a max deal the last few years are probably not going to age great but that's going to be an issue for any team that signs him imo.

I agree, which is why I'm not sure it's an easy decision for them to make. They will obviously have a lot of pressure on them to keep him, but they may wind up paying him a ton of money on the downside of his career.

It's a risk worth taking for them and they obviously have a ton of space for him after losing Gaudreau. I'm sure the fans there are more excited about this than if they packaged him for something like the Eichel deal. Also makes sense to try and keep their window open after the great season they just had and how weak the West seems overall. Still looks like a deal that could quickly turn into a problem, but main thing is seeing how the new guys fit in.

Kaapo Kakko signs for two years at $2.1M AAV. Things have not gone well for Kakko in NYR. Safe to say he hasn't been what he was expected to be. No F that made the NHL right away and looked similar from their D+1 to D+3 seasons has ever turned into a star later down the road.

Untouchable

Klingberg to the Ducks.  1 yr. 7mil

So happy about this.  Perfect fit.   If we suck again, flip for another prospect and pick at deadline.

If it works well, a shot at the playoffs.  Verbeek has said he wants to sign one more forward.

NEWS:

@NYIslanders

have purchased $50,000 in Mega Millions tickets for the drawing. If any of the 25,000 tickets hits the $1.28B jackpot, the net winnings will be shared by Islanders full-season ticket members, suite holders, staff and Islanders Children’s Foundation charity.

I still don’t understand what the bruins are doing

Are we trying to win now or tank for Bedard?

It’s great krejci is back but I don’t think we’re close to being cup contenders.

tough break for Getz, he’ll have to replace that Zegras fathead on the ceiling above his bed
If it's about the 46 to 11 change, the new board allows you to request a name change and I did that like two hours ago. Waiting for approval here on that. Also waited until number change to buy any Zegras merch. Changed profile pic after last post.

hahah... Just got an email from Ducks that they are having one-day sale 9/18 and if you wear your #46 jersey, you can get 46% off on a new #11 jersey. Zegras and Drysdale will be at the store all day.

Nils Lundkvist (NYR) to Dallas for a top 10 protected pick in 2023 + conditional pick in 2025. Nils had requested a trade, blocked on the right side by Fox, Trouba, Schneider. 2023 draft has been talked about as being deep. like the move and wish Nils luck in the lone star state.
Another untouchable

watched the ducks-vegas rookie game today. It's hard to believe Olen Zellweger just turned 19.. Him and MacTavish, also 19, dominated the game.

Olen's skating and game sense are off the charts.

Happy retirement to Big Z, Zdeno Chara. Glad he is signing a one day contract to retire as a Bruin. Great leader.

What's a bit crazy is now that Z is retiring, the highest active player on the NHL all-time penalty minutes list is now Corey Perry at #232 with 1285 PIMs. Tiger Williams' 3971 PIMs is a sporting record that will never be broken.

nice return for a guy that quickly got leapfrogged by schneider. it was brief, but nils wasn’t big or strong enough to compete. not his game, but then you better be elite offencively. pick is likely 20ish and will be used as trade capital i guess.
