That's more than just a Mankind feeler...that's the Mankind riff! Stone stole from...himself!

LOVE Supersonic! Slammin'!

Yep. Good. Loose. Fun. Kinda like a better Binaural. Greatest band on earf does it again. Stoked for the Spectrum.

To make it not a complete fellatio fest, "Just Breathe" kinda bores me.. cookie cutter Eddie ballad.. seems like they said, "We gotta put a slow one here, go write something"

After two listens, the only "dead spots" for me are "Johnny Guitar" and "Force of Nature". Just kind of by the numbers stuff. But, I'm sure a few listens in, it will shift around.

Agreed with JZilla...sounds like they are having fun again. Bodes well for the future, as, hopefully, the quick sessions for this album will become the norm, along with the new distribution making it "easier" to get things out, rather than waiting 2-3 yrs a disc.

Since outgrowing childhood (at least in age... :lmao: ) Halloween never seemed so far away

Thanks BBWC! Awesome cd so far! I already knew I loved "The End" and "Speed of Sound", but all songs are very listenable and I know after more times though I'm going to love them that much more.

really liking Gonna See My Friend, The Fixer and Just Breathe so far. Not so big on Johnny Guitar yet, but I bet it'll grow on me like Big Wave did.

About 6 listens through the new disc now. Love it but have a few beefs I suppose...

1) Tempo: There's not many tracks that sit nicely in the middle. Seems that most tracks are either loose and fast or tight and slow. One of pearl Jam's strengths has been to write tracks that rock but are tight. I'm missing that in this album.

2) MISSING : The Master of Animal Sounds - Where's Mike? I imagine a lot of the songs will be fleshed out a bit live, but this album is conspicuously absent of much musicianship (aside from Camron's rock solid beats)... most notably their signature guitar-work. There are some good spots but as a whole I find myself wanting to hear more of Mike and Stone's work.

3) Overly repetitive Chroruses - Not sure if it's just perception, but I'm finding them to be a little over-repetitive with some of the choruses....

The album is growing on me and tracks I just liked are starting to move up the charts.... but this album is lacking true "great" PJ songs in my mind. There's not anything that can hold a candle to a lot of the classic stuff just yet.

Just my 0.02...

Regarding the tour. Is this it? SPectrum then off to europe? They 100% skipped the Southeastern US eh? Any rumors of another leg anytime?

Is our track order the way it will be on the album? I got another copy from a local buddy and the track order is totally different. I'm assuming ours is right just because "The End" is at the end. The sound is much different too....ours sounds much cleaner, different things stick out....maybe his was a shotty burn.

Re: guitar workLOVING the guitar work in Among the WavesSupersonic also FWIW
No doubt there are some bright spots but as a whole it is less present than in previous efforts (and lacking overall IMHO). I'm not a guy who demands they shoehorn a solo into every song but they missed some spots where it would have added a bit to the song. As a whole there's not enough overall. JMHO I know... but figured I'd throw it out there

the assumption is they'll tour normally in 2010,, but no guaranteesDoubt they'd just not tour behind a new album, though
I kinda was hoping this was the case (suspected it a bit as well) but didn't know if anyone heard anything. Would hate to hear this was the extent of the US touring for this album. Would seem silly.

Per the PJ website, the track list of the download posted is correct.

FWIW, the opening trio of Gonna See My Friend/Got Some/The Fixer is up there with any PJ album opening trio IMO

My opening trio rankings:

1. Ten : Once/Even Flow/Alive

2. vs: Go/Animal/Daughter

3. Backspacer: Gonna See My Friend/Got Some/The Fixer

4. Vitalogy: Last Exit/Spin the Black Circle/Not For You

5. Pearl Jam: Life Wasted/World Wide Suicide/Comatose

6. No Code: Sometimes/Hail Hail/Who You Are

7. Yield: Brain of J/Faithfull/No Way

8. Binaural: Breakerfall/God's Dice/Evacuation

9. Riot Act: Can't Keep/Save You/Love Boat Captain

Flip flop 5 & 6 and maybe 3 & 4 and I'd agree with this list.

I think of this mini tour as the yang to last summer's east coast yinI think the 4 Philly shows is the "one off" here, a goodbye to a legendary building in a city where they have always been big favorites

Probably so.The problem with the Backspacer trio for me right now is The Fixer. It's not that I hate the song, it's fine, it just is the 6th best out of those 6 between Backspacer and Vitalogy. Same with WWS on PJ....it's the worst song of the 6 between PJ and No Code. So for me, the toughest decision would be between No Code and Backspacer for 4th....and The Fixer might be last there as well.

I really love the "rebirth" (probably a horrible word) of Pearl Jam (the band) now after self titled (Pearl Jam/Avocado) and now Backspacer. I'm glad for the self titled album in the middle (hopefully) of their existence. Vitalogy was the perfect bridge into No Code and Yield, and actually lays the groundwork for everything post Ten and Vs if you look at the grand scheme. But Riot Act is looking more and more like a letdown if they keep this up.

Hope that makes sense. LOL

Not bein' the post police, but No Code's third track is Who You Are, not In My Tree. For some, that could make a difference. Always tough to do these posts right after a new album. One move for sure, for me, is the swap of 8 &9. Really loved the opening of RA, but know it gets the least love of all PJ albums. Will have to give more thought.

Good call on No Code....and Riot Act...that actually is a better start than Binaural.

Whoah. Me likee. Eddie really fleshing out some vocals up in there.

Also think I prefer the demo version of Speed of Sound without the backing music

Still really digging this album
:lmao: Completely different song on the CD. It sounds too cluttered. The demo is so much better IMHO.
I don't recall hearing the demo....but Speed of Sound is pretty easily my least favorite song on the new disc.
TU had posted this a while back. I hope it still works:http://www.sendspace.com/file/6rlnci

Saw this on another board, so posting for the Chicago PJ fans here:

"For those of you living in or near Chicago, we're having another Pearl Jam party at the Ashland (2824 N. Ashland) to celebrate the release of Backspacer. It's this Saturday, September 19 from about 7 p.m. on. We'll be spinning the new record, raffling off some Pearl Jam goodies (including a Chicago '06 poster), and mostly just enjoying some drinks with fellow fans.

If you can, bring some nonperishable/canned goods (proceeds from the evening will benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository)."

Ya I think that's the link he PM'd me. I do like the demo a bit more.

To me, it sounds like the music is straight out of Into the Wild, where the lyrics are complete opposites. Loving Johnny Guitar...almost feels like it belongs on Vitalogy, not this album...but a very cool song nonetheless.

This is what I've thought all along too. And I love that tune...

I'm a wuss. I'm holding off until I get mine in the mail.
Same here. My PJ moratorium is about to be lifted and I can't wait...especially after accidentally  seeing some of the early returns (in here).I have an itch, to go to Seattle on Monday... :lmao:
Come to Philly instead

Can't figure it out, but there's a very specific musical reference point that the line:

"Now Johnny he be havin' lots of women..."

hits for me in Johnny Guitar, but I can't figure it out

Driving me nuts

First I thought Ramones but that's not right; then maybe Lou Reed, but that's not it either...My latest idea was that it was actually Jim Caroll-esque, but I don't know if that's just because he's fresh in my mid due to his recent death

Anyone hear another artist in that line's delivery?

Tom Waits?

Whatever happened with last year's Christmas single? Wasn't it supposed to be two new tracks? Were they crap or what?
