***Official Pearl Jam Thread*** (3 Viewers)

Reading all of you talking about these upcoming shows, I am seriously Jonesing to see me some PJ live. How much do you have to pay a scalper at a show? I've always gone with my fan club tix, but I'm seriously considering driving to one of these shows and taking my chances. It'd be a huge chance considering I'd be driving from MN.

I'm hammered ,but last night was ####### incredible. Best show, for me enyway, so far. Vedder and the rest of them were in great spirits. stone was in his own world. so fun to watch. Stone on rvm lost it. on his knees, falling back just ripping. he's letting go and it s fun to watch. they said something about the tour starting tonight, and they're right, it was different, awesome show

I'm looking for a single for Wednesday just FYI. If nothing else I'll just pick one up on the way in. Locked in with Tupside on the other 3.I was talking to my dad in St. Louis on the phone the other night.. he was talking about me possibly flying in for Thanksgiving, because my 90 year old grandmother has suddenly decided to fly in unless she changes her mind because of swine flu.. I told him, well I'll see how the money falls together.. right now I've got plans for the last week of October, I'm going to see 4 Pearl Jam shows in Philly. He paused and said, "well.. that sounds like a good priority." I said yeah man, it's history you ####### hippie.
Zilla, There is an outside chance that I may have an extra for Wednesday. I will let you know as we get closer. Wouldnt hold my breath but will keep you in mind if need be

Not a huge fan of Backspacer, but it's not bad. Reminds me of the Ramones for some reason. As mentioned, missing some Mike and some Eddie anger. I liked them better with Bush in the White House. Interesting review on AllMusic saying that this is their "party" album and they're having fun and letting loose. Probably true, but I like them better angry. :D
What songs remind you of the Ramone's? I'm not big into them really, so I don't know for sure, but I have a hard time imagining the Ramone's on about 3/4's of this album. I'm also enjoying the shortage of political lyrics for once. As I believe TU mentioned, at times in the past it seemed forced.
Not sure, just the beginning. The Ramones make me think of three things: fast pace, lots of repetition and short songs. So maybe that's why I thought of them. :goodposting:
I can easily see "Supersonic" being a Ramones song if you took all the harmony and complexity out of the vocals.
LOL, just calling it like I see it. It's growing on me, but I still don't think it's even close to self titled.

I gotcha.. I was just weighing in on what song(s) I found Ramones-ish.

In case people looking for tix haven't done so, check out the the forums on the PJ website. There are always folks posting singles there and, on the rare occasion I haven't gotten 10c tix, I have always been able to find a hookup there.

Right now, only doing the latter 2 in Philly, but, if a job comes my way, all 4 is a definite possibility.

Another nice setlist last night in Salt Lake City:

September 28, 2009 Salt Lake City, UT, E Center

Set List: Of The Girl, Breakerfall, Hail Hail, Severed Hand, The Fixer, Low Light, Marker In The Sand, Even Flow, Unthought Known, Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town, Got Some, Given To Fly, Immortality, Satan's Bed, Amongst The Waves, Do The Evolution, Blood

1st encore: Bee Girl (Fan brought on stage for wedding proposal), Just Breathe, Red Mosquito w/Ben Harper, Daughter, Supersonic, Spin The Black Circle

2nd encore: I Believe In Miracles (Ramone, Ray), Crazy Mary (Williams), Alive, Yellow Ledbetter
The Ben Harper Red Mosquito has been sickHere's nice vid/sound from the Portland show:

sick how good the vid quality is these days with the new cameras

Good to see they finally are playing SLC again. There was a lot of vitriol against PJ when I lived out there because they postponed some outdoor show and never came back to play the "postponed" show. A lot of people had trouble getting refunds back too, and my explaining to them that PJ had nothing to do with that did little to placate them. I don't think they played out there for at least 4-5 years afterwards either.

I just got the first two.. whatever... I know I've heard all of the 06-08

The message pit nerds are going ape#### over the T-shirts  I think PJ just did that to mess with everybody. Of course I drove half an hour to try and get one.
Can somebody list these out? Can't view that from work...tia

I still have 0 complaints except that the two ballads are a bit dull to me. Not horrible, just dull. Rest of it roxor IMO.

They haven't made a flawless album since their first one, so yeah a couple flaws are to be expected. Like most of their work, this one mostly kicks butt. Can't see how anybody who's a Pearl Jam fan could be disappointed, other than in the length.
I think it is solid the whole way through. My only complaint is there are no real "great" songs in the group, though.I rate PJ songs on a 4 point scale.

4-Great songs that never get old and I can listen to at anytime without needing to be in a PJ mood (Alive, RVM, etc etc). I put 2-3 songs from each CD on this list.

3-Good songs I thouroughly enjoy, but either I can hear them too many times, or I have to be in the right mood (Daughter, Once, Market in the Sand, I am Mine). A little less than half their catalogue I'd put in this category.

2-Songs that are OK, I don't hate them, but I'm not putting in a CD to listen to this song in particular, but I won't skip it either (WMA, Whipping, just about everything on Riot Act).

1-Filler that I don't really enjoy. I'll skip this stuff, and don't really need to hear it again (Rats, foxymophandlemama, etc.).

For Backspacer, there are a lot of 2s and 3s, but I haven't found any 4s yet. That's my only complaint.
My 4s on Riot Act are
and Save YouI also think Riot Act is Pearl Jam's best album of the past four.

Without delving into it, and without knowing what songs you prefer, I would say Chile, for one. Those fans go crazy down there, and if they picked that as one to be on the list, it must be good. I think the crowd interaction alone would be worth it. Crazy, how they know more of the words than fans here do...I tried to see if the Grand Rapids one was the one when Peter Frampton and Neil Young joined McCready in the most memorable guitar jam I've ever seen, but it doesn't say as much on the setlist. ####, was that Toledo?

Anyway, Chile, that's all I got. Maybe make the other selection one with the most songs you like...

How were these boots selected, by the way, anyone know?

The Grand Rapids show is tremendous

Great setlist, awesome crowd

Think it's my favorite boot from the US tour that year

FWIW Sonny, not the Rock the Vote show from 2004, which is the one with Neil and Frampton

I got Grand Rapids and Hartford. Liked those setlists the best...and they had alot of songs. A few of those shows were around 21 or 22 songs because of all the covers they removed.

You will certainly be in the minority in most places regarding your last statement. Suprised you don't have a few more 4s though, cuz I have three of them.I think the 4s on Riot Act are Can't Keep, Save You and LBC.

I liked Ghost alot when I first heard the album but I still have yet to hear a live version I like, so that sorta downgraded the song in my books.

I like those as well. They'd just be a notch below the others. Plus I like I Am Mine at that level. I'd even rank 1. Ghost, 2 Save You, 3. Can't Keep as the best three songs overall in the past four albums.

Unthought Known will likely definitely crack the top 10....I wanted to put Arc on there, but I guess I consider that an EV song more than a PJ song

Its funny how music is so subjective. I started listening to all PJ albums since the show is about one month out. Listened to No Code two days ago and thought that the album was not great. There were only 2-3 songs that I liked. I think part of the problem is that I am pretty sure none of the PJ albums on my ipod are in order of the songs on the CDs. Not sure what happened there but there was 5 slow songs in a row on No Code and I know that is not how it is in the studio cut

I agree. Ten, Vs., Vitalogy and Yield are all so close to me, it constantly changes which one I like best at the time. I love Hail, Hail, but No Code isn't up to par with the other CDs. In fact, I'd rank Riot Act above it.

It's funny, I really like your ranking of the CDs, but I think only two of your top ten songs would make my top ten.It is hard for me to rank the albums though. Riot Act and Binaural would be at the bottom for me as well, that part is easy. The rest I like too much. Ten is a classic. While I think it is overproduced, the songs are still great and never get old. It's hard not to put it number one. vs. is just solid straight through. It has a couple of tracks I could drop off, but again, so many great songs. Vitology? When that came out, it just hit me what a great band they are. Betterman and Corduroy are definitely in my top ten. I can't make an argument for this being a number one album, but it has some great songs on it. No Code is my sentimental number 1. When it came out, I realized that each new album meant more than just getting some new songs to listen to. It meant I was going to see a new side of the band, and I had a project to sit down with the CD and really dig into it. I never see Yield at the top of anyone's list, but dang if I can't put that CD and an love every minute of it (except for Pilate, hate that song). Riot Act and Binaural were down points, but then Pearl Jam comes out and I think this could be their best ever. Still love it.A lot depends on the mood, so if I was ever to rank them, it would be a very fluid ranking, easy to change from day to day.

Me too!The Tremor Christ at Detroit 10/07/00 was a highlight that still stands out in my mind today. Ed's intensity was near peak during this tune imo. It was 5th out of the gate that night. I was going nuts, people probably thought I was too. Not to mention, the start of that show was ####### awesome! :GoCorduroyGrievanceState of Love and TrustTremor ChristThis is one song I'm really hoping for in Philly.

Acer's right. Can't believe the LA crowd, didn't expect that. They were way into it. Vedder's demeanor was different from the start. He came out with this swagger last night -- feeling "cocky and strong" I guess. Why Go and Animal set the tone for sure.

Maybe it's the album at number 1, which he brought up, I don't know. Said something about how it's not the biggest thing, but that at least he can tell his kid, because "he's at that age now", that the old man's number 1, laughing. Or, maybe he knows he's gotta bring it here, to the fickle masses. Either way, he was really into it and fired up.

Of all songs, Big Wave was disappointing. Might be that it's a song I want to like too much, but I just didn't feel it last night and I didn't hear anything special in it. Finally got Force of Nature, my favorite off Backspacer. Really dig that song. But then, there I am listening to Unthought Known a few songs later, and I can't get over how good it was live. That's the one. And Present Tense, man that was awesome; what an incredible song. I kinda forget how good it is. My third favorite of the evening would be the mosquito w/ Ben. They are nailing that.

Mike did the Even Flow solo from behind his head. I thought he also picked it up last night. He hasn't gone nuts like he does, not that he hasn't had his moments. Can't believe I didn't see any "No Even Flow" shirts, weird. What's up with that?

I might have been too high for the string quartet session but it was cool nonetheless. On Black, Vedder really strung it out on that one part, longer than I've heard him do in some time. That was cool. The crowd finished and he was still going.

Speaking of still going, picture an LA crowd that didn't stop, even when <gasp> the lights came on (for RITFW)! Shocker. Good stuff.

I had so-so seats towards the back and it didn't matter whatsoever. Great place to see a show, once you get by Disneyland. Sound was excellent and all seats have great views/vantage points. Whoever built that joint thought more about the people/experience, than how many seats they can stuff in -- good for them.

Last two that stick out for me were Life Wasted and Down. Love Down.

Oh, and I had to get a Dodgers/PJ shirt so I can wear it to the World Series when we beat the Yankees. :lmao: TU

looks like i may have stumbled upon a San Diego ticket, although it's gonna cost me $80.

Any of you fools making it down this way? Maybe a brew at setbreak?

guys i have 2 tickets for the 27th in philly.

i can't make it and just looking for face value.

can i sell these or is anyone interested in them?

i'll be there the 31st.

You dont know how bad I want to tell you I will buy them and then sleep over for the show on the 28th. However, with a 8 and a half month preggers wife and a 2 and a half year old, no way that is happening. Thanks for offering it up here first. Part of what makes this place great IMO

Also, listened to Yield and some of Vitalogy today. I like both albums infinitely better then No code.

But I havent heard Yield in a while. WTF is up with Push Me Pull me. Could be one of the worst songs I have ever heard. I did rediscover Low Light which I really enjoyed.

I love Vitalogy. Great album. Might be number 2 for me.

I feel like I cant count Ten and Vs because that was the height of my adolescence and you remember things differently. Ten did not leave my CD player my entire freshman year and Vs was a continuation of ten for me

It's funny, I really like your ranking of the CDs, but I think only two of your top ten songs would make my top ten.
I guess it's what you're looking for in a song. I'm a huge fan of PJ songs that really explore Vedder's voice, hence the 10 songs on the list (and Unthought Known & Arc). But it's weird, sometimes you never really get a true appreciation for a song until you here it live. This happened to me with Indifference.....was always my least fav on Vs......and then I heard it live. Same thing with Oceans (even though the live version happened to be my friends PJ cover band). Anyway....I really can't think of an PJ song that I truely dislike (sans Stupid Mop).....I think No Code will always stay on top for me, and the rest will always change depending on the mood.

Same thing happened with me and Smile. I always thought it was decent, but nothing spectacular. Then I heard it live at the "Ice Bowl" show in Wisconsin. He told the story about the song, and it was a perfect timing for it. We were all freezing and huddled together in the GA section, it had a very communal vibe. The song just seemed to fit perfectly. Loved it ever since.

Binaural

Backspacer is growing on me and may eventually pass No Code. Never liked more than a handful of songs on Riot Act and Binaural. The top 4 are all fantastic.

Adding my top 10 songs in chronological order:

Porch

Black

State of Love and Trust

Rearviewmirror

Small Town

Corduroy

Hail Hail

In Hiding

Come Back

Inside Job

I'll take my stab again. Not sure it changed must from the last time we did this with self titled.

Ten

Vitalogy

Vs.

No Code

Backspacer

Pearl Jam

Yield

Binaural

Riot Act

With the new album soaking in (and with Philly on the horizon), it's time once again for me to run through the entire catalog and put down the booters for a while. I don't expect many changes to the above....5-7 might be the only place where it's possible.
