I Hate the Phillie Phanatic

by Tommy Lasorda

I hate the Phillie Phanatic.

In fact, I am not very happy about mascots in general. I think they take away from the game on the field.

One of the worst incidents was perpetrated by the Phillie Phanatic. The Dodgers were in town to play the Phillies and somehow, it got ahold of one of my jerseys. It took the jersey, put it on a dummy and ran over the dummy again and again.

That type of a display should not be shown in ballparks, especially in front of children. It exhibits violence and disrespect.

I pulled the Phanatic aside and said, “Why don’t you run over a dummy with a Phillies jersey?”

I called the front office of the Phillies and told them how I felt. They can play with kids in the stands, but running over the dummy was simply wrong, and that kids would get the wrong impression. Apparently, they didn’t care.

The next time we were in Philadelphia, I confronted the Phanatic. I told it not to use my jersey anymore, and so the next time he did, I was forced to act. I went right up to it and body slammed it to the turf.

I often wondered how it got my jersey, and then I found out how. Steve Sax would give it the jerseys because my players thought it was a funny thing to do.
Is this for real? This is great. :lmao:

Looks like Hamels for game 1, hope he's getting enough rest with that new baby at home.

Too bad we don't have Cliff Lee available for games 1 or 2 in LA, would have given us a better chance to steal one on the road.

I think Hamels will pitch a gem.

You'll be fine, I think. You just gotta keep that fan from giving him pitching advice.

I had a vision that came to me in a dream that the Philberts would win the WS last year, that came true. No vision this year and I think the Doyers present righty batter issues that Colordao didn't. It was ugly last year, Phillies dominated and the very same could happen again but my heart and brain agree that the Dodgers are World Series bound. Doyers in 6.

Looking forward to this one. Hopefully our guys can build off the Rockies series win & get back to the Series.

My girlfriend wants to go to the WS if it's Phils-Yankees. She's a Yankee fan, and I'm not sure I could tolerate being there with her. She can get loud & rowdy, which is fine at home, but not so good at the stadium. :) Just hoping the stinking Yankees don't make it.

Whether or not the Yankees make it won't be a concern of yours in two weeks.

I would be very very concerned with what the Phils bats are going to do to that Dodger's rotation. I hope I'm wrong because I want the Dodgers to win but I think the Phils bats explode in this series.

Crazy that the Phils have been in 7 NLCS and have played the Dodgers in 5 of them.
Those were some good match-ups in '77, '78, and '80. The Phils had some good players - I remember fearing Schmidt every time he came to the plate and Carlton was great. I remember being shocked when Garry Maddox blew those plays in Game 4 in '78. He was such a smooth centerfielder that it was bizarre to see that happen.Hoping the Dodgers can get revenge this year. All I know is if the Phillies throw at a Dodger, there better be retaliation in the next time Philadelphia bats. Billingsley's wussing out still bothers me.

Fixed. Phils played the Astros in '80 - best 5-game series of all-time.

Brett Myers' wife better duck. Todd Zolecki twitter:

Pedro will start Game 2. Myers, Kendrick off NLCS roster. Park, Bruntlett are on. Myers is not happy about being left off, either.

Totally unsubstantiated conjecture on Mike & Mike this morning that perhaps the ALCS series would cause a change in start time for Sunday's NLCS Game 3. Rain could force ALCS game 2 to Sunday at 8 on Fox, and baseball might not want to compete against itself with NLCS on TBS. The conjecture was that maybe they would move the NLCS game to 4:00 Sunday on TBS. Philly fans would have the Eagles (in Oakland) and Phillies on TV at the same time. Only one is playing an actual pro team, though.

MLB will do whatever it takes to accommodate the Yankees. There are no teams with equal pull. Dodgers are the only team left with a big national following, and the Angels still alive segments that market.

Last year Manny hit a ball about as far as you can hit it in Philly, to dead center, and it missed leaving by about a foot, instead hitting off of the elevated section of the outfield wall. I thought at the time and still think that that had a greater impact on the outcome of that series than most people seemed to think, at least in terms of what was discussed anyway.

Utley's 2 run homerun in game 1 sticks out to me as the biggest play of that series. Lowe was dominating up until that point. Things could have gone very differently.

Over/Under on innings till a Phils player gets plunked, or theres an incident? Dodgers have admitted they will look to "pitch inside."

Can't wait until Kershaw gets to throw again @ Philly in Game 5 (if necessary). Despite being a lefty, he has been overmatched every time he has faced the Phils. Look kids, this isn't the dregs of the NL West. It's the big boys.

More brilliant handling of the pitchers by Torre. Game 1 last series, he yanks Wolf in the fourth inning with the scored tied 2-2 despite Wolf being a veteran with a reputation of recovering from tough innings to pitch well the rest of the game. But he stays with the 21-year-old who has completely fallen apart in the fifth inning so he can throw the only pitch he can manage to get in the strike zone, the fastball, against a good fastball hitter.

Dodger fans complaining about Torre pitching decisions. Shocking.

Carlos Ruiz having a huge postseason. Who knew?

You don't think he should have removed Kershaw earlier?
Oh yeah. He's always been terrible with pitching decisions, you know this as well as anyone. Luckily he had a guy like Mariano to hand the ball to all those years taking hundreds of probable bad decisions away from him.

For sureI misinterpreted your commentMy BadI shudder to think about what would have happened with Torre at the helm witbout Mariano

Sherrill is a very good pitcher that just cracked under the pressure. He is sick vs LH hitters, what a change of events.

Time to get in your cars Doyer fans.

George Sherrill wait....

Lets get a couple more so the 85% capacity-filled stadium can beat the traffic.
