***Official Post-Pujols St. Louis Cardinals Thread (3 Viewers)

Rumor has it the White Sox and Yankees have scouts in Cincinnati this weekend watching the Cardinals. I know they can't be sellers at this point, and I would assume the Cards are looking at pitching. The bullpen is their big weakness. Wonder who the Cards are looking to trade?

6-1 on the homestand! Maybe they are finally turning things around. Although I don't think they will beat the Reds out for the division, I would be happy with the wildcard again.

do you know how sweet it would be to land Grienke - now I know that won't happen - but that would take care of one of our biggest needs. Also would be nice to have an additional decent lefty in the bullpen. Oh and while I am dreaming up the wish list, maybe we snag a decent 2B option.

Of all the pitchers the Cards could trade Shelby Miller for, why is he only linked to James Shields? Has his stock fallen off THAT much?

They are starting to play a lot better (minus the Cubs series). Garcia should be back soon, which I think will send Kelly to the pen which is their weak link. I think they have a great shot at making the playoffs again.

By the way, I knew Carlos Beltran was good, but not this good. He threw Belt out at 2B with a great throw, then homered off Cain in his 1st AB. He has really taken the sting out of losing Pujols.

Cardinals need to just do the same thing as last year: keep it close, get hot in September and then win it all in October again.

It's all about keeping those cranky knees happy. So far, so good.

Yadi got pulled from the game tonight after a collision while he was blocking the plate. Hope he is OK.

They are starting to play better. I was hoping for a 6-4 road trip, but they have already won 3 of 4. They may actually gain ground on all the teams ahead of them during these 10 games!

On a side note, who are they going to call up for September? Mo acted like he wouldn't call up Taveras during an interview I heard a few weeks ago. Shelby Miller perhaps??

Unbelievable game 5 Friday night. I didn't think they could top game 6 of the World Series last year, but Friday's game was even better. Looking forward to the series with the Giants.

New rumors:

Benji Molina will be named the new assistant hitting coach.

Dodgers are interested in Schumakr.

Mo is looking for a middle infielder, lh rp, and right handed hitting OF

Cards sign Wiggy to a 2 year deal for about 5 mil. Um, yay?
Really not a fan of this off-season so far. I knew it was going to be quiet, and I knew that LH reliever and RH bench hitter with some pop were the top priorities. I'm just completely underwhelmed with the multiyear contracts given to crusty old players to fill those roles like Choate and Wigginton. With no Pujols contract, they shouldn't be in position to be settling on these contracts. There is no reason they couldn't match the commitment the Angels made to Sean Burnett, for example.

Well, Choate is darn solid against his own kind (you can argue one of the best in baseball), but he's going to be a LaRussa-type specialist where he gets murdered against righties. Not a whole lot of bang for the buck, IMO and I agree, they should have pushed for Burnett, who is younger and isn't completely useless against righties.Wiggy...whoopie. If he performs to even 2009-2011 levels, fine. If he matches 2008, fantastic. If he matches 2012, ####.My guess is they're really worried about what they're going to have to pay Waino. But still, Berkman is gone too, and he made a pretty penny.

Not spectacular moves, but they should both help the team. Especially Choate.Kind of bummed to see Skip get traded, but there wasn't really a spot for him any more.I'm hoping they are going to acquire a 2B/SS with the $$ the aren't spending.

One of my pipe dreams has been Cards landing Tulo...that will never happen, but sure would be nice.

Dan Plesac brought up Tulo to the Cards no less than five times during MLB Network's Winter Meetings coverage. I don't know if he was making that up because it was just something that made sense to stir the pot on, or if he may have had some insight into the fact that there may be some dialogue between the two teams. In any case, I can't imagine them landing him without giving Miller, Rosenthal/Kelly, and then some.

For the love of all that is holy this would be such a perfect fit - my favorite current player going to my favorite team to fill a need that can keep them in the mix for the division. If they could get away with Miller and some lesser prospects I'd be all for it...but not sure I would want to lose Rosenthal.

Bad news about Carp today. After I heard the news, I wondered if they might give Lohse a call since he still hasn't signed with anyone yet. I heard Mo isn't very interested in him though. Wonder who will take Carp's place?

Shelby Miller is the easy answer. If Garcia isn't 100%, we'll probably see Kelly too.Waino/Garcia/Lynn/Westbrook/Miller is my guess.

Still a really good rotation plus Rosenthal in the pen for a whole season will be good to see.

What do you guys think the chances of the Big O (that is what one of the Cardinals beat writers called Tavares in an article the other day. I like the nickname) making the team out of camp. He would be a really nice 4th OF to have on the team. Matheny would have a nice bat in the lineup when he wanted to rest Beltran, Holliday, and Jay.

Mozeilak has already said that Taveras likely won't break camp with the big league club unless someone gets injured. He feels Taveras needs as many ABs as possible, whether in the majors or AAA.

So, he would rather have Chambers and Robinson on the team? I like both, but I don't think either of them will be any better than role players. On the other hand, I am sure he is thinking about service time and how much this guy will cost the Cards here in a few years. The team looks really good so far. The only weakness I see is up the middle at SS and 2B. If Furcal is healthy and Wong makes the team, the middle won't be a problem.

Per Derrick Gould with the Post-Dispatch, Furcal's having Tommy John surgery on elbow. Recovery around 8 months.

Let the epic Kozma/Cedeno race at SS officially begin! :bag: :kicksrock:

No surprise here as I thought something was serious when they shut him down. Wonder if Mo is looking at any trade options?

This should have happened last August. No idea why they let him get away with no surgery then.

Apparantly, they can't make a player have surgery, and Furcal didn't want to have it.
Interesting. I wonder if they have a possible grievance to file on the cash they owe him for this season. Honestly, I've never really looked into something like that. Any ideas?I seem to remember something similar happening with Troy Glaus and his shoulder. The Cardinals were very upset with him, but I don't remember anything coming of it.

Craig signed a 5 year extension today. Great move by the Cards! He is an RBI machine.
Agreed. Love the terms and that it cuts two years into his free agency with a club option for a third. He'll be through his prime before he ever hits the open market. They're buying all the good seasons at a discounted rate.

Troy Glaus...I forgot the Cards had him for one good year. I know his last year in Atlanta wasn't anything to write home about at all.As for Craig, that was a fantastic contract. Great move locking him up.

My spring training thoughts:

Great signing of Craig! He is an RBI machine.

I really like Rosenthal in the bullpen. Kelly vs Miller will most likely be decided Thursday.

Matt Carpenter is turning out to be an adequate 2B. I thought this would go like the Schumaket experiment. Glad I'm wrong! Matt and Jaimie performing well are the best two stories if canp.

When was the last spring training there were this few questions in the bullpen going into the season? Their bullpen is going to be the strength of this team.

Gotta say, Mozeliak is getting things done. Three for three on Molina, Craig, and Waino in post-Pujols extensions.

When will one of your decrepit old outfielders die, so Taveras can get consistent ABs?

Beltran is a FA after this season, you'll only have to wait one more year. I have a weird feeling that if there is a short-term injury to one of the corner guys, Craig may slide into the OF and Adams play some 1B. (Especially if Adams makes the club out of ST)

I'm not in any hurry to see Beltran leave.
He needed the game he had today badly. Not a great start to the season for him.

I really wish it was Taveras Time in CF instead of Jon "Meh" Jay.
Don't underestimate what Jay does in CF. Playing between Holliday and bad-wheeled Beltran is no easy feat, and he does it so well he makes it look like we have a competent outfield.
