Might as well start it up. The biggest game of the season for both teams thus far. Both 6-3 and tied atop the division. A lot of bad blood between the two teams. Jets finally have the better QB. Patriots still have the better coaching staff.

Prediction: Jets 27 Patriots 20

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and hoping for different results. Until the Jets beat the Pats, I will continue to pick the Pats. I know, no Brady, Favre, Jets' improved play on D, etc..., but I'm still picking the Pats to win.

NYJ- 17

NE- 27

In 3 games against the Pats with BB, Favre has thrown for 401 yards with 4 TD. He hasn't exactly lit it up against NE as of yet.

It's all on Brett. How he plays will most determine the outcome of the game. The Jets won't be able to hide him from the Patriots like they've done against other teams the past couple of weeks.

Jets 34

Pats 10

It's not about Brett - It's about both Jets lines coming together at this point in the season and dominating.

Favre throws more picks than the Jets score touchdowns. Another scrub backup outplays Favre and the better team wins going away.

Jets put up more yards and seem to outplay the Pats most of the game.

BUT.....2 of Favre's 3 picks go the other way for 6 and the Jets lose a heartbreaker 27-23! :goodposting:

Only Detroit, SF, and Pittsburgh have given up more sacks than NE (30) so far this year. Meanwhile the NYJ have the 2nd most sacks (31) in the league. Seems like the Jets could be pressuring Cassel all day. Advantage Jets.

On the other hand, the Jets have given up 16 sacks, good for 12th in the league. The Pats have 16 sacks, good for 22nd in the league. In addition, they just lost their leading pass rusher Adalius Thomas probably for the season. Seems like the Pats could have a hard time putting pressure on Favre. Advantage Jets.

The Jets give up an average of 3.2 yards rushing a game, the Pats give up 4.1 yards on average. Advantage Jets.

The Jets average 4.6 yards per rush, the Pats average 4.1 yards. Slight advantage Jets.

I have a hard seeing the Pats winning this game.

Stats don't win football games. The stats for both teams are skewed in this case. The Jets offensive stats have the benefit of two games where they lit up the Cardinals and Rams. The Pats rushing stats are heavily slanted when the Dolphins ran all over them. I doubt the Jets will hang nearly 50 on the Pats. This game should be close.Even with the Jets having the statistical edge, NE still beat them in NJ in the first full game without Brady. Certainly the Jets should have won that game as the Pats were the most vulnerable as they had ever been.

Yes, the Jets should have won. The Jets also should have beaten Oakland. If they played Oakland again, they'd be likely to beat them. They get to play NE again, and I think they're likely to beat them here.

Mangini will use a high-powered sniper rifle to shoot someone from the Pats organization filming his morning practice way up in the stands and....

Jets: 27

Disagree- The Pats were fired up for that game after a week of people casting them aside when Brady went down... Randy Moss showed it the most IMO.Pats also played pretty much a perfect, mistake free game with what, 1 penalty and 0 turnovers.... You'll win a lot of games doing that...

Also that game was sealed with the Pats running the ball with Lamont Jordan down the stretch eating up the clock while the Jets Run D was still finding itself.... I don' think anyone runs it down the Jets throats like that anymore.....

I see the Patriots playing a ball control offense for this game and only throwing deep to keep them honest. Cassel and Welker and Faulk are going to have solid games catching the ball on quick slants and screens, that should slow down the pass rush of the Jets. I also see Green Ellis with another solid day this week with 15-20 carries for 80 yards and 1TD.

I predict that the score will be 24-17 Patriots.

no nfl network?pspats - don't care about the differential.edit: forgot my reasoning -- pats are winners, jets are losers.

I voted Pats in a blowout. I think the Pats are better than most people currently think, and better in reality than they are statistically. The Colts had to play near-perfect ball to eek out a 3 point win 2 weeks ago (meaning no sacks, TOs or penalties - think about how often a team does that, and the Colts ONLY won by 3), and they beat up the Bills last week. I think the Pats, with their years and years of winning experience, are going to surprise again by easily winning on Thursday.

Interesting comments in a thread after the 1st game...

WEEK 2 MATCHUP

From that Thread:

they batted a ball that more often than not gets picked but, of course landed in a Pats arms.... And one Cassel pass was inches from Revis....

while I'll agree that play was of the "lucky bounce" variety, Kevin Faulk made fantastic play to catch that tipped ball, it didn't just "land in the Pats arms".

your comments about the kicking game and SPTeams were very accurate.

To me, there were 3 MVPs for NE:

- Gostowski booming every kickoff and forcing NYJ to go 80yards every time

- K Faulk making timely big plays, many on 3rd down

- L Jordan running like a wrecking ball to churn the clock in the second half.

statistically, the Pats and NYJs were nearly identical.

The difference was field position and one costly turnover by Favre that left NE well into NYJ's side of the 50.
What it came down to in that game was this:

1) Field Position - I said after game one the Pats Completely Dominated the kicking game - after this game the Jets were shopping for a new punter.... Every single Jets drive was from their own 20 yard line or so while the Pats started 5 drives in Jets territory...

2) Penalties / Turnovers - Pats had 2 penalties for 10 yards one of which was when the game was over... Jets had 6 for 60 - One of which was a complete phantom Offensive Pass Interference on Cotchery which backed the Jets up, and eventually led to a Favre INT trying to dig out of that hole...

3) Kevin Faulk / Lamont Jordan - Dump off passes were pretty much all they wrote for NE, then Jordan pushed for som ebig games at the end - Jets can't let that happen again. Jordan was a bull in this game, The Jets D has been stiffer since and I'm not sure the Pats have all those weapons still.

4) Adalius Thomas - Sealed this game with a late sack when Little Leon tried to block him..

Patriots 35-17..blowout..

despite what radio personality Joe Benigno says on his show on WFAN-NY , the Patriots will win this game...Jets are not that impressive, they lost to the Raiders, afterall!

every time a radio personality gets all warm and fuzzy about the Jets, the team throws out a stinker...

this is the quintessential Jets heart-breaker game..ya know the type, the fans start to 'believe' in the team, the radio personalities start to dream of big wins and playoff berths and that they can make a legit run at the SB ( thanks Benigno!) , and then it all comes crashing down in one game and we spend the remainder of the season listening to the belly-aching of Jets fans.. :homer:

this is that game..

the genie goes back in the bottle , tomorrow night...

I like the Patriots, 24-17. They are playing at home, have already beat the Jets this season, and even though the Jets have a 3 game win streak going I wouldn't call any of their wins impressive (poor KC and St Louis teams, and also Buffalo who has struggled lately). I think the Jets' record is better than what the team actually is. Jets have pretty much played two big games this season: Week 2 v. NE -- they lost, and Week 3 @ SD on MNF and they lost that game too. I don't see them coming through in this big game either.

I picked the Pats in a close game. This game will go a long way to decide the AFC EAST. I really think if the Jets win they will get this division. It would give them the confidence as a team to get the division and show they are a real force in the AFC. If the Pats win they are a solid team in the AFC race that could go further then most think. This game will clear the picture in the AFC East and show what each team is about in the AFC playoff race.

 Jets fans are so snakebitten, I think most of us won't 'believe" til we see it... Kinda like Pats fans in 01' - I remember a message board I was on back then with Pats fans who were calling Bellichik an idiot early in that season and wondering if the 3-4 defense would ever work there.

Benigno is GREAT... He's the guy Jets fans turn to when all is a complete loss and he'll be talking about hanging himself and jumping off a bridge and "Let me tell ya, don't raise your kids to be a Jets fan..... don't torture them like that"....lol Greatest line...

I have to say though, the Jets boards are FIRED UP for this game....

While the overal pulse isn't all about confidence for this game, (hard for a Jets fan to ever be overconfident)... Jets fans do know how it goes - IF the Jets win, the media and pundits will go wild and there will be the ultimate build up to the Tennessee game the next week with the Jets having extra rest.... THIS IS IT!!!!

IF the Jets lose, as you say, it's back in the bottle... Jets boards will talk about Firings, Bad Draft picks, washed up players... There's absolutely no middle ground here - On Friday the talk is either Super Bowl or Fire Mangini and Co..... I try to stay a bit more even keeled than that but, even I can see the oppotunity here and hope for the best.

theGanggreen.com has a great thread "Suicide Pact" calling this game the biggest Jets game in 10 years......

This is the thread for the real Jets fans the ones that are going to put it all on the line Thursday night have their rope at the ready, sleeping pill prescription refilled, cyanide capsule, electric chair plugged in, warm bath drawn with razor blades ready, gun loaded, car in the garage running with the windows up, Stove on with the pilot light off, Seppuku sword at hand, ready to do the right thing should we lose this game. This is the season, no excuses no BS all in. This is the game where the butterflies are going all day the expectations of a battle coming down to the last few seconds with everything hanging in the balance. This is the game real Jets fans have been waiting for for years. I’m all in are you?!

Jets should blow out NE tomorrow ...

Farve vs Cassell (JETS) - Blowout

Jones/Washington vs Geen-Ellis / Faulk (JETS) pretty much a blowout

Oline (PUSH) but momentum heavily swinging in the Jets direction.

Wide receivers (PATS) Advantage offset by lack of QB

Rush Def (JETS) - Less per game, Less per carry, Antonio Pittman ran for 83 yds vs NE

Passing Def (PATS) Advantage again offset by NE lack of QB

Momentum (JETS) - Jets are Healthy, fired up, and getting better as a team each week. They are still stingy from the week 2 loss to the Pats and are determined to avenge the lose and the Goal Line Stance.

- Pats are hurting with key loses on both sides of the ball and playing pretty uninspired football barely beating bad to average teams and losing to good teams.

Coaching and Home field are the only things in the PATS favor this week ... It won't be enough

PATS won't know what hit them!

Forgot to mention

Jets score 28.3 per game allow 21.1 +7.2

Pats score 20.9 per game allow 17.8 +3.1

Favre's been good in two games this year, and mediocre-to-awful in the rest. I think he costs the Jets this game.

Pats 23-17.

This game will mostly be decided by the foot/leg of Gostkowski, and which offense will manage their offense better. As much as I hate Bellichek, he'll come out with another solid gameplan and the Pats prevail 16-10.

Favre: 23-41, 231 yds TD, 2 INT

Jones: 16 carries 45 yds, 3 rec 12 yds

L. Washington: 4 carries 25 yds, 2 rec 18 yds

Cotchery: 6 rec 72 yds TD

Coles: 4 rec 41 yds

Keller: 5 rec 58 yds

Cassel: 20/29 177 yds, INT

BGE: 22 carries 85 yds TD

Faulk: 7 carries 19 yds, 4 rec 36 yds

Moss: 4 rec 53 yds

Welker: 6 rec 58 yds

Jets should blow out NE tomorrow ...

Vegas disagrees.

Farve vs Cassell (JETS) - Blowout

Who will yield more turnovers?

Jones/Washington vs Geen-Ellis / Faulk (JETS) pretty much a blowout

Thomas Jones? Really?

Oline (PUSH) but momentum heavily swinging in the Jets direction.

I don't even know what this means.

Wide receivers (PATS) Advantage offset by lack of QB

The Pats will field a QB. One who's not infamous as a turnover machine.

Rush Def (JETS) - Less per game, Less per carry, Antonio Pittman ran for 83 yds vs NE

I own TJ in the subscription contest and am not expecting good numbers here.

Passing Def (PATS) Advantage again offset by NE lack of QB

If NE has an advantage in passing defense, the Jets have a problem.

Momentum (JETS) - Jets are Healthy, fired up, and getting better as a team each week.

Its a shame that the Pats cant field enough players, dont care about the game and are getting worse. [/sarcasm]

They are still stingy from the week 2 loss to the Pats and are determined to avenge the lose and the Goal Line Stance.

stingy? lose? Goal Line Stance?!?

Pats are hurting with key loses on both sides of the ball and playing pretty uninspired football barely beating bad to average teams and losing to good teams.

Pats 41 Denver 7

Coaching and Home field are the only things in the PATS favor this week ... It won't be enough

Jones/Washington vs Geen-Ellis / Faulk (JETS) pretty much a blowout

Thomas Jones? Really? Absolutely

Oline (PUSH) but momentum heavily swinging in the Jets direction.

I don't even know what this means. Jets O-line is jelling.

Wide receivers (PATS) Advantage offset by lack of QB

The Pats will field a QB. One who's not infamous as a turnover machine. Or can hold Favre's jock (or Palmer or Leinart, who isn't starting)

Rush Def (JETS) - Less per game, Less per carry, Antonio Pittman ran for 83 yds vs NE

I own TJ in the subscription contest and am not expecting good numbers here. This means what? At least he provided stats?

Passing Def (PATS) Advantage again offset by NE lack of QB

If NE has an advantage in passing defense, the Jets have a problem. Two top players at their positions are hardly considered problems.

Momentum (JETS) - Jets are Healthy, fired up, and getting better as a team each week.

Its a shame that the Pats cant field enough players, dont care about the game and are getting worse. [/sarcasm] No, but they are old.

They are still stingy from the week 2 loss to the Pats and are determined to avenge the lose and the Goal Line Stance.

stingy? lose? Goal Line Stance?!? He's right. Well, not in his terminology.

Pats are hurting with key loses on both sides of the ball and playing pretty uninspired football barely beating bad to average teams and losing to good teams.

Pats 41 Denver 7 Denver is a good team? Pats and Jets both have bad losses and good wins. Your point?

I'm gonna say Jets 20 Pats 16.

Favre 2 TD 2 Int 230 yards. Good but not spectacular.

Cassel 1 TD 3 Int 190 Yards

Messy game.

"barely beating bad to average teams" < > Pats 41 Denver 7Sorry if that was difficult for you to follow.

Did we forget that the Pats' stats are also skewed by playig such juggernauts as Denver, San Francisco, and Kansas City? I think it's pretty even for the sake of comparison.

The Jets need to borrow a page from the Colts and incorporate Keller into the game plan. If the Jets play a smart game, he will have a good fantasy start.

More generally, an aggressive passing game plan is what the Jets need here, as NE will be overly pre-occupied with dealing with Jones and Washington.

I'm starting the Jets kicker, as I expect both teams settling for 3 points multiple times tonight...
