***OFFICIAL Red Dead Redemption 2 Thread***aka AHRN'S MURDER HOBO ADVENTURE: HUNTS ELK AND PLAYS POKER (1 Viewer)

Just made the upgrade to 4K last night, and this game looks jaw-droppingly spectacular at the higher resolution.  I thought it was gorgeous in 1080p.
Yea I’ve been thinking about doing this but can’t find one I like at the right cost.
I haven't really considered switching because I love 3D.

Though, now that you guys got me thinking about it, given that 3D sets are going away I should probably consider getting a TV that is both 4K and 3D while a few are still available, and that'll get me by as long as I can hope for until maybe it gains popularity enough again.  Don't want to go the project route which is about the only other way to get 3D then.

Got my final pelts until I can get into the southwest part of the map.  Figured out some bits how the game works on spawning animals.  Here's a tip for getting perfect moose pelts but it probably applies more generally though I'll talk specifically about the very northeast of the map and the moose there.

There is a moose that spawns just to the left of the "C" in Willard's Crest.  That picture doesn't show it, but my map actually has a moose image there.

When I am across the river to the west, the area respawns at 6:30 am exactly.  Hit pause to see your pocket watch and check the time.  I always look away before that time just to be sure, but I've had deer spawn on my side of the river 15 feet away from me while I was turned.

About 40-50% of the time a moose spawns.  Of five spawns today, three were 2-star and two were 3-star.

So the trick is to get there a little before 6:30, and if you don't get one, reload a save and get back to just before 6:30.  However... if you save anywhere from about 6am on, if you reload that save it will load you at 9am.  Too late.  So you need to make a save the night before so you can reload back to there and then sleep until morning each time.

So what I do is:

Ride near Doverhill (see map image in link, further west of moose spot) sometime in afternoon or evening.
Save there.
Ride to the Doverhill building, to a cart just east of it.
Make camp there.
It always puts my camp over on the dark elk silhoutte further east of Doverhill (closer to the moose).
Sleep until morning and you wake at 6am.
Immediately get up (you don't need to break camp, just leave but make sure you have your rifle off your horse) and sneak-run east towards the ford.  You should get there about 6:15.
Hide in the bushes near the tree stumps nearest the river.  Eagle eye and if you don't see a moose across the river (I never did) then look away and wait until past 6:30.
Look back and hopefully the moose spawned.
If he did and he's 3-star, I sneak across the first branch of river, onto land on the right, move around the rock, and that gives you an angle to shoot the moose in the eye while it's grazing.

If he didn't spawn, then reload your save which should return you to the day before.  Ride back to Doverhill, camp, sleep, etc.

I saw someone elsewhere mention after killing an animal like this, that he'd leave the area for a few days until the carcass was gone.  I couldn't seem to get any more to spawn so I slept an extra day in the trading post southeast of Doverhill, came back with my normal camp-sleep thing and killed another 3-star on the decayed corpse of the first.  So not sure if the extra day of sleep mattered or not, but could try it if they dry up after one.
To add to this, If you want some safer cougar hunting:   there's a water tower just south of Doverhill  right by the train tracks.   Wait until dark and go sit up there and look around.   Tons of hunting to be done and thats cougar country -- I had one run right up to the base of the tower looking up at me and snarling.   Ohh, look how big your teeth are Cougar, I'm really scared of how ferocious.... WAITNOIMNOTCARCANORIFLETOTHEHEAD

Dropping some of the advanced predator bait or whatever it's called might help bring them too.  I scored about 5 perfect cougar pelts and a bunch of lesser in that area after I was done needing them, while I was working on the 4 moose ones I needed.

Still in Chapter 3. Thought the

mission where Arthur gets captured was pretty cool.
There wasn't much to it in terms of game play, but it was pretty weighty in terms of the narrative / immersion. Also liked that I ended up looking like a hobo after all was said and done. How long until Chapter 4?

Also, I haven't been bringing back food for the camp. Instead, I have been donating money (which I can later use to restock everything). Any downside to just donating money? The underlying camp mechanics aren't very visible.

ETA: on the xbox, how do I pull up the list of missions? I have tried everything. I know I could access that menu in the beginning of the game.

you can either left on the d-pad  OR

start (pause) - story - chapter list

left on the d-pad was bringing up my journal. Is there a sub-menu in there that I missed?

Will try the latter. But, IIRC, the last time I did that it just showed my completed missions.

Is the first burglary mission in that menu? That's what I am after. I haven't done it, and I forget the general hint (I think it was "North of Strawberry" which some have said is like half the map north).

Try tapping left instead of holding left. That's how it works on the ps4. Holding it brings up the journal

I’m finally starting to make progress in this... are there any missions that will lock out other missions?  I’m still early in, chapter 2. I don’t want spoilers, I just don’t want to miss stuff either.

Speaking generically, if you want to be a completist -- The yellow-icon main character quests more or less stick around until you do them.   The side quests / stranger encounters (usually white-icon/map markers) seem to be more ephemeral -- do those as you get them, because they don't always last.

Gotcha thanks.

How do I start them. If I click left I get a list of something like the 3 gunslinger mission, but it’s not on my map. How do I get those up and active?

Read the cards, for the gunslingers the back is the important information.

Everything in this game has to be read, bounty posters, recipes, etc. Just get in that habit now. It makes sense but it isn't an obvious mechanic and I don't remember it being explained that way.

I'm not sure if I remember the 3 gunslinger mission -- someone can correct me if I'm forgetting, but that sounds like a challenge, not a mission.   A challenge you more or less have to get more familiar with the game and they will start to make sense.

Like my current hunter challenge Is "kill/skin 3 black or grizzly bears".    You don't get a map icon for this sort of stuff -- you just have to know what you're working on and kind of do it as it comes up.   So now anytime my horse freaks out because of a bear, I go chase it.    My current herbalist challenge is pick and eat 4 kinds of berries -- again, these can be scattered all over the map so you don't really get a map icon, you just have to do as you find them.

The mission stuff, you should be able to bring up your map, and then there's a button for "index" -- hit that, you'll see your active/available yellow and white icon'd quests.

oh if it's the one you're doing for that guy for his book (thanks for jogging the memory @Poke_4_Life ) then yes.  The book guy gave you photographs.   Read the back of each of them and you'll get a map icon for each.

Generally it's good practice with any picture (or note, photo, map, letter, etc ) that you get to read it and flip it to see if there's more info on the back.

I googled "rdr2 rob 4 stores in one day" wanting to see if there were any tips on keeping bounty low.

And google returned a map of Target stores in my area.   :excited:

You have to do various things to start the different Challenges, which unlock equipment sets which when bought, give you extra max health, stamina and dead eye.  Like winning a game of poker is needed to start Gambler, robbing a townsperson to start Bandit, etc.  You may want to search the list of them to get them all included in your mission list.

You guys probably all spotted this already... but I missed that there are posters at the post offices for a set of missions where hunting carcasses of various types are desired.  Starts in Valentine, I think maybe they only show up in a certain order as you progress them.  Just go inside the post office there and look for the poster you can interact with.

It took about a month including a restart from the beginning, but I’m now getting hooked. I’m heading downstairs when I have breaks to play for a bit and knock out quests.  I still don’t get all of the core / health / stamina stuff but as long as it’s not killing me, I’m not really stressing it.

This is the kind of game where I’m having to “let go” a bit and just take it in. I’m going to die, I’m never going to get a gold rating for a mission, I’m going to accidentally kill someone, etc...  doing that and not being so particular about being perfect has helped.

Played for about 3 hours last night, way later than I wanted to.   Completed several missions, and then just as I was going to bed I loaded a game instead of saving it.   I guess I'll do better at the missions next time.

The controls are still not automatic for me, so I have caused myself some problems by accidentally drawing my gun on people instead of talking to them and/or shooting them in the face.  Sorry about that, mister.   Oh, and last night I accidentally punched my horse.

There should be an auto save to load, right?

A cougar ran through Annesburg and I went after it, fired two shots at it.   First one catches and kills the cougar.   second one catches some random hayseed's horse in the head and killed that.    Couldn't do that again in 500 tries if I wanted to.

New Journal Entry:  You can have a crime reported and get a $10 bounty for "Animal Cruelty".     Just add that $10 to my 'dead or alive' status, you can have the $10 before you kill me.

I've noticed some of the side missions, the white labeled missions, disappear during the day. Maybe that's why some of you are thinking they disappear.

I've noticed this with the crazy scientist, Dragic, I think? And the Mayor in Saint Denis. Some of their missions can only be started during the night, and then they disappear off the map during the day.

Probably not for everyone but something I am having a lot of fun with isthe companion app.  I set it up on my iPad and then turned off the radar in the lower left corner.  In the sense of immersion, it's pretty cool because now I just see the screen and no radar and I look down at the iPad for directions, kind of like looking down at a real map while I'm riding around on my horse.

It's the small thing in life. :)

Late chapter two question...

There’s a mission where I ended up with a $300 price on my head in Strawberry. I’ve read I can donate all my money to the gang and turn myself in and wipe that out. How does that work?  I tried that, went right into the police station and they didn’t do anything. I don’t want to pay that much if I don’t have to.

Spend/donate all your money. Go to the town with the bounty. Commit a crime, like robbery or fighting. When the cops show up, hit l2 and choose surrender. You'll spend a night in jail, lose any cash, and come out Scott Free

This worked. The previous time I didn’t commit a crime, I just went to the station. After getting bored I pulled my gun and they don’t give you the chance at that point.

I normally would just pay, but I’m not losing $300 for Micah.

The first time you go to a police station (not during a mission), it kicks off the bounty poster thing and they won't arrest you while that is playing out.  If you go at other times, just walk into the police station and talk to them and they should arrest you.

Couple of little things maybe worth sharing.

I thought all of my meat gathered from hunting, when combined with Thyme, Mint, or Oregano, was making meals that gave a yellow boost to Health, Stamina or Dead Eye cores.  But now I notice that only meals made with the Big Game meat (wolf, bear, cougar, etc) is giving those bonuses.

On the mission list being available from the left d-pad or the pause menu, I'd always used left d-pad, but just noticed the pause menu one has much more information.  Like instead of the d-pad bandit challenge saying, "Steal 5 horses and sell them" the pause menu version includes that you have to sell them to the fence at a specific location.  Which explained why my horses sold to normal stables weren't counting.

I just accidently found a quick and easy way to achieve the extreme personality designation.  I wanted to see if I could take down Fort Wallace so I loaded up with chewing tobacco, miracle tonic and a ton of ammo and headed up with my long block with the scope and just pick off folks on all sides.  They never left the building and at the moment I am not even wanted.  I am quite sure I'll get an icy reception when I head back to Valentine for a bite to eat shortly.  (I haven't tried to enter the Fort, yet as they keep sending more guys out, but I may just for kicks.

  I wiped out the entire fort; must have been 80 to 100 guys and there were Xs stacked on Xs around the entire upper portion of the fort.  I tried everything I could think of to try and get in and loot all the bodies, but nothing worked.  I tried to lasso and climb, dynomite and fire bottles and even the lock pick.  There has to be a way in as I could peer through slats and see horses running around and there inside is fully set up.  I never ended up wanted and didn't see a huge difference in how I was treated by the townsfolk (might be all the baths I take).

What are guys spending money on? (Once your camp is fully upgraded)
Once Camp was fully upgraded, and then you buy all the recipe pamphlets from the fences -- really not too much.   I'd gather more than enough loot from missions and exploring and hunting than I needed.    towards the end, ammo was the only "necessary" thing I was regularly spending money on.  I bought a lot of new outfits.    I became a lot more giving in all the charitable decisions the game presented.

Basically the last half of the game, I was the the golden rule on steroids.   People who needed help or were good to me, I did my best to do the best thing for them.  But I guess to really be "the good guy" you have to try to defuse negative situations, which I never did.  Step right, and I got you with medicine, food, money, whatever you need.

But step wrong to Ahrnthur Morgan and you will get a shotgun blast to the face quickly.  :gang2:

I finished the epilogue last night.  This is an all-time great game.   I still have a couple hunting quests I want to finish but I'd guess I am near done with this game for good.   Fallout76 be callin me.

a couple thoughts on the end (obv major spoilers here, probably don't read until you're done)

In typical HOARDER gaming fashion, even as the epic final music is playing and I'm climbing up the mountain, I'm still stopping at all the little tents along the way "Ohh!  ground coffee!  better grab that."  (Me to Self, 10 seconds later:  "What the f*** is your real issue, guy?   You've never had a percolator this entire game and you've never drank any coffee other than the #### that Pearson made for everyone by the base fire".   )

People in the past and/or in video games were super tough.  Charles and Sadie climbing a snowy mountain with a sniper bullet in the shoulder and a buck knife puncture in her kidney.   :lmao:  mm-hmm.

I was still ready to put 2 between Dutch's eyes after he did his thing with Micah.

and GOOD HOLY HELL the credits were like 35 minutes long.   They had some cool names in the music credits I wasn't expecting -- I picked out Willie Nelson in game while playing but was surprised to see Josh Homme, D'Angelo and Rhiannon Giddens listed with credits too.  Rockstar does not skimp with budget, anywhere.

Baths, lots and lots of upgraded baths.  They should be calling me Billy The Clean when I come to town

Oh and weapons, better ammo and gun oil to keep them in top shape.  And, if you lose a horse or 5 its nice to be able to just buy one versus roping, breaking and bonding with one from scratch.

So, am I thinking too much here?  Did Arthur and John's actions in this story change the course of John's story for RDR1 (or does it just not matter).  Also, I wouldn't put RDR2 down too soon, there is a lot of stuff still popping up post game.  The credits foreshadowed some of this.  Also, John eats like a pig post game.  It's became the game within a game for me just to keep him fed.

Damn. I sit here tonight emotionally drained. Just finished the end of the main story, just breaking into the epilogue. Overall I feel like I connected more to Arthur's character/story, though it's super close. 2 incredible games. The people who write these games could be writing movies if they wanted.
