CMike released. Rod Smith is now primary backup to McFadden. McFadden has his injury history. Good time time buy low for Rod Smith!

I know very little about Rod Smith, but he could be fantasy relevant now, as he is only a McFadden injury from meaningful playing time. As has been mentioned, Smith has a history of ball security issues, and he was dismissed from Ohio State after a failed drug test. He was, however, a top prospect coming out of h.s.

Anyone have anything on Rod Smith?

Without giving away his work, Matt Waldman had some nice things to say about Mr. Smith in the RSP.

The kid never had his head screwed on in college, but he's got some athletic upside. He was the 6th overall high school RB in the nation in 2010 according to Rivals.

Meh..Dion Lewis was a highly touted HIGH SCHOOL prospect too and he never amounted to....Ohhhhh. Let's see:

-Take a highly touted player from HS

-Add a terrible situation

-simmer on low for a few years and wait for opportunity

-BINGO!

Also, they signed Robert Turbin today. The cowboys must have a direct trading route to Seattle.

The Sea connections are beginning to look weird. Is there a common system theme they are attracted too or what?

Yeah I'm trying to figure out if it matters. Turbin is the anti-Christine Michael. He does all the right things; good teammate; good locker room guy, etc. If/When McFadden gets hurt though, the devil we know in Turbin, or the devil we don't in Smith?

Probably can get both in some leagues if your roster can handle it.

I don't know any of the answers either except for the almost guaranteed fact that McFadden can't hold up through week 16. At some point, some other Cowboys RB IS going to be relevant in the ff playoffs. Snatch them all.

This is my plan. I've got about 50% of my budget left. Probably going to blow 25% on Trey and 25% on Turbin and see what happens. I have the space as I traded a bunch of guys for Freeman and Coleman last week.

I'm strapped this week roster wise. I'm going to pick him up next week. Praying McFadden doesn't decide to get hurt this week...

Yeah, about that list. Bernard is #14. The other top 84 on that list have at best become a back up RB with no real prospects at becoming a starting RB.

It doesn't make it irrelevant. Often we see highly touted high school recruits become highly touted college players, pro prospects, and successful pros.

2011's RB top 10 from Rivals included Freeman and Crowell. 2012's had Yeldon and Gurley in the top 5. Smith's own year had Lattimore and Dyer in the top 5, guys who either experienced crushing, debilitating injuries or were complete head cases.

The point is a highly respected organization thought Smith was among the best of his peer group at the end of his HS career, and a major university recruited him as well. Since then, coaching change, off-field issues, etc. He's in a prime position to see some opportunity in the near future, and my bet is he capitalizes when given the chance.

The other point is, it's damn near impossible to predict who is going to be great. For every Gurley, there's a Richardson. For every Jeremy Hill, there's a Jeremy Hill 2.0

Look, I've "bought" the guy but the fact of the matter is nobody thought enough of him to draft him and he was already cut by the one team that gave him a shot. All that other stuff about high school and what not is far less relevant today. He's a long shot. Even if McFadden gets injured and he gets a shot, a good shot, his sustainability has to be in question.

Not that I disagree with your point, but I noticed that you didn't mention 2009 when Rivals had Bryce Brown, Trent Richardson, and Christine Michael as their top 3. :)

Projecting high school players is an extremely difficult business. It's not too hard to identify the physical specimens who developed early, but projecting things like the ability to process complex playbooks/schemes and the work ethic to hone the finer points of one's craft is almost a crapshoot. Some of those kids will be able to dominate the college level with not much more than their physical gifts, but that won't help them much in the NFL where virtually everyone is physically gifted.

I would be shocked if they threw a greenhorn in with Romo coming back. It's going to be Turbin. Even if McFadden stays healthy, expect Turbin to get worked in.
