Natural Science and Permanent Waves would make an appearance on my top 5 song and album list, respectively.

Love all the songs and albums mentioned on this page, even Tai Shan, I'll just mention random other albums/songs for consideration. Counterparts, Power Windows, Between the Wheels, Jacob's Ladder, The Garden, Bravado, Side 2 of Roll the Bones, Subdivisions, Mission, Prime Mover, Cygnus X-1.

 
Hold Your Fire is a mid tier Rush album for me, but I still love it. Mission, Prime Mover, Turn the Page, Open Secrets...all great tunes. Second Nature is the only slight dud for me; I even kind of like Tai Shan.

I agree about Caress of Steel being the Rodney Dangerfield of Rush albums, although it is rather ponderous and absurd at times. The Necromancer and The Fountain of Lamneth both are rather silly lyrically (you know Peart face palms himself when reflecting on both of those :lol: ), but the great musical moments are heavy in abundance in both of those tunes. There is a certain charm about those early slightish-ameuturish attempts at writing longer tunes.

HYF remains my least favorite Rush album and I don't think its really close. Presto has a few songs I really like (Scars), T4E has a handful, RtB has more good than bad imo....but HYF, there isn't 1 they play live where I say "oh good, its _____".

And for anyone who pays attention to my posts ( :tumbleweed: ) I'm much more a live music junkie than studio albums. I'm more familiar with their live music and the songs that get played tour after tour (which explains why I'm bored to tears with Tom Sawyer, Working Man & La Villa Strangiato. All great tunes, but a tour without them to make room for others wouldn't upset me).

I don't..... My buddy is an accomplished drummer who's been around quite a while in bands...

He's a sick drummer who grew up idolizing Neil Peart but, never played in a RUSH band.. These guys needed a drummer and he's been practicing every beat for months now... I'm not even sure if this is a regular gig or what... Knowing his playing and how meticulous he is, I'd bet money that the RUSH critics and Neil Peart worshippers are in for a show and will be impressed, at least with him ; )

I'll find out Friday if/when they play again.

Well, that's hard to say considering they've only played three songs from it since the HYF tour. ;)

I think it is definitely time to bring Prime Mover back. I'd say Turn the Page, too, but that is probably a difficult one for Geddy to pull off vocally. It used to be that he struggled with the 70s stuff, but he even struggles with some of the 80s stuff now, as well. I was so thrilled when Marathon came back on the Time Machine Tour, but he really struggled with the chorus. Father Time is still undefeated.

 
I have an iPod mini in my car so I don't have every Rush album on there, only a select few. I guess from what's on that iPod mini, my favorite 7 Rush albums are (I swear ”7” is a coincidence and not a nod to the recent flurry of threads in the FFA), in chronological order:

You can probably guess by that list that I went to high school and college in the mid 80's ;)

If you poll enough Rush fans, every album will be in someone's top 5. I've even seen a few fans online say that Presto is their favorite. :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: Seems crazy to me, but to each his own, right?

On another source of Rush threads (Cygnus X-1 on Facebook) I so wish I could use the term Honda.

The article about Tom Hanks playing Neil Peart in a biographical movie about Rush shows up 3 or four times with people saying "how great it is" and "can you believe this is happening". The site has a page about them giving this TheOnion.com-like description:

Once, I can understand not reading everything, but on the second or third time after that it gets frustrating. Read the site!!!

That being said, Tom Hanks and NP do look really similar.

 
Unfortunately, many Rush fans were born absent the humor gene. Which is curious, because Al and Ged are both pretty loose and funny.

 
I wonder if there will indeed be a tour in 2015. Maybe not. It had a head of steam and I have heard nothing since early this year.

Father time is catching up to Geddy vocally. Time Machine and the Clockwork Angels tours have really shown his vocal limitations now. He sounded stellar on the Snakes and Arrows tour and has not sounded as good since. Hey I don't mind that much. I just think their set-list will be far more limited going forward. Forget 70's material other than maybe the tuned down 2112 and I think they bring back The Trees next time out. But basically (other than La Villa) that may be it from that era.

And yes his early/mid 80's stuff is tough for him now. I think the next tour may sadly finally be the last one. I know they will never announce it. But it very well may be winding down.

Hey curious about your take on the Vapor Trails remix.

While some tunes I really don't like how they were remixed (Ceiling Unlimited, Vaportrail, Peacable Kingdom, Secret Touch) some of them are so much better now like OLV, How It Is, And The Stars Look Down, and especially Freeze.

Freeze was un-listenable in it's original form. Now it breaths and has power and dynamics. Same for And The Star's Look Down (a huge fav of mine) some tunes like Ghost Rider and Sweet Miracle sounded fine in their original state.

The biggest problem with the original VT was the clipping and absolute lack of dynamics and separation which Rush are known for. The entire album was brick-walled so badly I could not believe they released it in that state. I understand the affection for how imperfect it is...and some of the tunes it works well like Nocturne, Secret Touch, Earthshine and Vaportrail (an absolute beast of a Rush song IMO). Now I can pop the album on and listen to it start to finish without my ears bleeding.

I dont listen to the boys as much unless im gearing up for a show but since it was released snakes and arrows is my go to album. That album really blew me away. I don't get the love for CA. Its too derivative of their old stuff and not done as well. Some good tracks on there for sure but I don't go back to it much at all. Seemed like finally caved to all of the people who wanted them to go back to that sound.

Last year also had an iTunes remaster, which helped the sound of it a lot. I agree that the original release was a difficult listen.

The remix is awful because they tweaked too many things, resulting in some unnatural sounding vocal parts and some of the rocking parts had their punch completely neutered. Sure, the overall thing sounds better sonically and isn't nearly as brickwalled, but the songs themselves just lose a lot of their punch, and even the drums have this kind of tinny sound to them at times. If that was the normal release, I'd put it at the bottom of my list.

I don't have it (Big Wheel) on any of my '91/'92 boots.

As for Return of the Prince, they played the Necromancer (complete) in '75 or '76. AFAIK, there's one known recording of it and it's not very good. I have it but never uploaded it to my Google Play so I don't know the date off the top of my head.

Description: This is considered to be the "long lost rush boot" or long awaited, I should say. It's an audience recording from the "Down The Tubes Tour" which was for promoting the "Caress Of Steel" album. At this particular show, Rush was the opening act for Kiss, that is why the setlist is only an hour long. The drawbacks? Well, it's an audience boot from 1975. That being said, it's not THAT bad, actually. You can hear the instruments decently, although Geddy's voice is often lost or very low. However, the sound quality gets a little bit better as things move along...just in time for the biggest treat on this collection...the only full, live bootleg recording of "The Necromancer" available. It was performed on later tours, but not in it's entirety. Overall, the sound quality is pretty weak, but not completely unlistenable. Also, given the context of this performance, I think it's really neat. This is Rush from the "Caress" tour as an opening act...I mean, how often do we get to hear that? After the Rush performance you can hear the stage announcements for Kiss merchandise being sold at the venue. For the Rush die hard, this is a must-have. If for no other reason, the full version of "The Necromancer" is included here.

Who the hell is voting in this poll? Different Strings, absolutely, but most everything else, that wouldn't make my top 20 songs. I mean Available Light?? Anything off Presto for that matter...geez.

Yeah I know what you mean. Its a limited list though of only songs that haven't been played. For me Peaceable Kingdom, Different Strings and Losing It were easy. Freeze is a good tune off of Vapor Trails but probably not in my top 20. No idea why I voted Big Wheel, Vapor Trails would have been a better choice. Presto has a few good tunes but overall the late '80s - early '90s is my least favorite era of Rush music.

 
FYI, this is likely the last full length tour they'll ever do. I frequent a music forum where a regular poster is a close friend of the band's (he has been right about too many things over the years, that he called ahead of time, for him to be full of it) and he said it was a near miracle that they talked Neil Peart into doing this tour. He simply doesn't want to tour anymore, at his age and having a small child at home now, but he agreed to do this tour. But this is probably it, so we all need to enjoy it.
