*** Official Russia vs. Ukraine Discussion - Invasion has begun *** (1 Viewer)

Sorry if this was already noted, but I saw that former boxer Vitali Klitschko is the mayor of Kiyv. 😲

He and his champ brother, Wladimir, posted a video in English for Western viewers.

DOD: As we see it right now, Ukrainian command and control is intact. General sense from what the US is seeing is Russia is not moving as fast on Kyiv as expected.

We did this at the dinner table last night with my 16, 14 and 11 year olds. I didn't pull out maps but we talked a good bit about what's going on over there and how it could potentially impact us here.

I asked them if any of their teachers talked about it today - nope. Wish they had @fatguyinalittlecoat as their teacher.

I'll be sorely disappointed if none of their history teachers talk about this today.

17 year old son for me, and it's the first thing he brought up when he got home from school.  They did talk about it in just about all of his classes yesterday, to one degree or another.  My wife is generally careless and clueless re: world events, but she is teaching reading to two little Ukranian girls at her school.  They were recently adopted and she said they have already made every day better.  But the older one (4th grade) is very aware of what is going on "at home" and quite traumatized.  So now my wife cares too.

Was that in response or prior to the former President of Finland saying Russia's actions may force Finland to join NATO?
I would imagine that Finland joining NATO would be as concerning to Putin as Ukraine joining.  Having St. Petersburg pinched off by both Estonia and Finland would be disconcerting.

This could be a big bargaining chip in getting Putin to back off Ukraine.  Don't think it is enough to roll this all back but it could maybe play a roll in the final outcome.

I just saw that one tweet that I posted, so I dunno if that's even confirmed.

If it's confirmed, it's definitely not a response. Russia spokesperson just made that threat, Germany isn't going to decide that quick on something that big.

Holy war crimes Batman!

P.S. post the link to part 3 where the driver does the DX SUCK IT hand gesture after he gets out of the car.
These Ukranians are tough as 3 dollar steaks. There's a great interview with a young Ukrainian journalist I saw on MSNBC, I'll see if I can find it. Her babushka wasn't leaving, and said to her: "I'm proud of the military, and I've lived a long life."

Russian foreign ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova warns Finland and Sweden they would 'face some military and political consequences' if they tried to join Nato
Kind of makes the argument for joining NATO all by itself.

I like the one who got in the face of a young Russian soldier and told him to fill his pockets with sunflower seeds so flowers would grow where he died in Ukraine. She got some balls.

Would love to see some 'Saving Private Ryan'ish "sticky-bombs" getting slapped to the side of those vehicles.

They have like real weapons to blow the tanks up that are working in spots. Javelins I think they are called.  Russia is getting sloppy and going down the main roads in columns and they are ambushing them with these things.

Lisa Peskova, the daughter of Kremlin spokesman Dmitrii Peskov (who said yesterday that ‘Russia, throughout all of its history, has never attacked anyone’) comes out in with anti-war message

I think that post was already deleted, bu she wasn't the only one. Roman Abramovich's daughter posted anti-war message,

I want to read tweets about how Ukrainians are buried under a pile of Javelins, and Turkish drones. (EDIT: That reads weird, but you know what I mean)

Every Western country from Estonia to the US better be sending care packages of military nastiness. Why the #### are we hearing Ukrainians say they need supplies??

Every military needs supplies, especially ones facing a larger force.

Sometimes, it's gotta get personal before it truly affects us.

I read all these tales posted here and anecdotes from the mediasphere and can't help but wonder if the people of this country view themselves as on the same level of toughness that is being demonstrated in Ukraine.  I suspect the answer is "yes" but I can't think of anything further from the truth.  I certainly wouldn't be doing these kinds of things.

Can you picture a Kardashian doing anything in the same parsec as these Ukrainians, much less your typical social media "influencer"?

That’s a fair assessment, I’d like to think I’d be out there trying to make things harder for an invading force, but honestly, my main goal would be to ensure my wife and children are out of harm’s way.

Pretty sure wearing the uniforms of the opposition army is already a war crime, and russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine that were wearing the Ukrainian military uniform.

We would.

As far as me - it would be my duty. Plenty of people died for me to have this freedom. It would be my turn.

I wouldn't be rushing out to the front or anything, but I think I would do my part in my local community.

Most of the people who I grew up around would do the same, and unlike me, they are equipped to do so.

Lol I am certainly not. I woke up today at 730 on a soft bed and walked to my soft sofa. I’d be dead day one out there.

I mean if my city was under attack I’d have to help but I’d be terrible at it.

The average American?  Heck no.

But there are enough that would that it would form a pretty decent size army.  I'm doing my best not to go all internet tough guy here, but I'd like to think I would engage an invading enemy once I had secured my family into a safe environment.

I think there are a lot of folks that would like to think they would go all Wolverine but in truth, probably 10% or less of the population would engage in defense of their community let alone go someplace within the country to try to defend against an invasion. And I'd also guess that a good portion would be former service members. My guess, no scientific numbers.

I could and would attempt to defend my home, not sure my reaction to having to leave and go defend Miami or Houston.

We would.

There is a portion of our population that will rise up and surprise folks if the time ever comes. I think we would all like to consider ourselves a part of that group but in truth that number is infinitesimally small. Knowing you a bit from around the board, I have no doubt you wouldn't hesitate. I hope that I and many more would be as convinced but honestly I don't know.

Russia has been BANNED from the Eurovision Song Contest. Another domino falls.
In fairness, most of Russia is in Asia anyway, which reminds me of another topic(for another thread): why is nobody talking about the fact that technically, Europe and Asia are just one big continent?
