I'd really like to see Meredith, Lang, or Moore with this last 3rd rounder.
me some smarts at C.He's zippy fast, but definitely somewhat raw. Hopefully he can settle in and learn from Hines and Holmes, but he can be a game-changer right away as a return man if he stays healthy and holds on to the ball.I would have preferred Lang or Moore with this pick, but hopefully Wallace isn't Willie Reid II. Mayock just said he timed him at 4.28 in the 40 at the combine.Moore must have something wrong with him that I don't know about. I had him as an early-mid 2nd rounder... why he's still there, I don't know.

Incremental improvements will definitely be the key this season. For this team, that should be good enough to keep us in contention. If we can muster a pretty decent return game and get Sepulveda back, we could be looking at a pretty nice field position margin. The short yardage offense is another area where we could make notable improvements, so hopefully we'll draft a bruiser in the late 5th or 6th to help that along.Cookiemonster said:Pitt could have won two more Super Bowls recently if they had somebody who could CATCH a punt!Memphis Foundry said:He's zippy fast, but definitely somewhat raw. Sounds like another hard worker. Nothing flashy with any of these picks, but I'm liking the trend of picking guys who fit the Steelers' mold.Casey seems like a "Steeler" guy to me. Does whatever it takes to help the team. The thing I like about the Wallace & Lewis... they are both 6-feet tall.DJ Moore's 5-9 stature was my biggest concern with him. Lewis sounds very much like William Gay coming out of Louisville.Very happy with the Urbik selection at Guard. VERY happy!!!Now for the end of RD 5... Developmental Tackle & DE/DT(I wonder if Merdith is experiencing the Carl Nicks drop. He went RD 5 to the Saints and started most of his rookie season).Names I'm looking for:OL - Schlueter, Gardner & MeredithDE - Bennett, Pedescleaux & EgbohDT - T. Taylor & Chris BakerWR - I'd still take Dillard in a heart beat.TE - IF Casey is still there, it would be hard to pass on him as well.
I'd get wood if we ended up with two of those 3 in ten more picks. Some guys I hope the Steelers are looking at right now:
DT - Ricky Jean-Francois - LSU
DT/DE - Mitch King - IOWA
C - A.Q. Shipley - PSU
OT- Jamon Meredith - SCU
OT - Fenuki Tupou - ORE
S - Chris Clemons - CLEMSON

Summers is a FB.Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of Carey Davis.I understand Burnett. They spent a lot of time with him. Why a RB when they just cut Russel? I doubt Shipley makes it to a 6th and I can only hope Ricky Jean is a relative unknown. DL depth is badly needed.
Summers is unskilled and not a threat as a primary runner, but he's an absolute battering ram with the ball in his hands and can catch the ball out of the backfield (not like the Steelers ever throw to the FB.) He's basically a guy who will be in the game in short-yardage and inside the 5 situations.Summers is a FB.Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of Carey Davis.I understand Burnett. No. You're still on drugs. You said no lineman until late.I told you, IB - one interior line prospect and maybe a developmental guy or two very late. I'm not on drugs.Having seen a lot of Burnett in person living in Orlando, I can tell you the guy is an underrated prospect because he's not tall and doesn't have elite timed speed. However, he's a terrific punt/kick returner and can step in and be a nickel corner. He's a terrific athlete and has incredible vision and instincts - big play waiting to happen. Of course, if he doesn't flash in camp, he's also the kind of guy who could end up on the practice squad because he doesn't have size or elite timed speed. I think they would have been better off moving up a few spots and grabbing Meredith, Robinson, or Johnson. Those are 3 guys with starter upside. I think Burnett's ceiling is as a #2 corner and a top punt returner, but more likely a reserve corner and hopefully the starting PR. He was one of the first guys Pittsburgh brought in, and someone I frankly expected to see them take with one of these two picks.Summers, well... there's your short yardage back. They're using these late round picks to fill very specific immediate needs. They've got a KR specialist, a GL specialist, 2 guys to compete for the CB3 and CB4 spots, and interior line depth. So far, I like the draft, but I do agree with IB that a developmental LT with potential might have been wise. They can rectify that if they go Lydon Murtha in round 6.
If they can get Murtha in the 6th, I'll be moderately consoled. I still don't understand 2CBs plus Keiwan.I told you, IB - one interior line prospect and maybe a developmental guy or two very late. If they want a FB, aren't there much better FB prospects? I guess I just don't agree with the FB/RB tweeners. I prefer the Lester/Kreider more traditional FB if you're going to have one at all.Summers is a FB.Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of Carey Davis.I understand Burnett. That's what I said. Am I still on drugs?Oh. And you're on drugs. Starks is unlikely to be a Steeler in 2010. Hartwig 50/50. Where is your continuity? The more time goes by, the more I think they're really going to BPA in the early rounds and I also think they believe D-line is highest priority.
My guess is they take one interior lineman with the hopes that he unseats Stapleton, and that may be it in the first 4-5 rounds.
People thinking we're going to see a 1st round OL for sure, and probably another in either rounds 2 or 3 are kidding themselves, IMO.

I said Meredith was a great athlete at OT. Murtha looks like Muhammed Ali next to George Foreman by comparison. Murtha is the biggest TE in the draft. Most TEs would kill to have Murtha's measurables. I would still rather have seen another DL or OL to another CB.If they can get Murtha in the 6th, I'll be moderately consoled. I still don't understand 2CBs plus Keiwan.
I read it as "and that may be in round 4-5" As in they won't take an O-lineman until 4-5. I stand corrected. Outside of not getting an LT of any kind (thus far), this isn't a terrible draft. I would have grabbed an LT instead of the WR...especially now that we have the second CB that can return kicks. That's what I said. Am I still on drugs?Oh. And you're on drugs. I agree with you.... I don't think Starks is here after this season and they're basically FORCING themselves to pursue a LT in free agency or round 1 next year. The Wallace pick, IMO, was a direct replacement for Nate - he'll fill that role well (catching long TDs and dropping catchable balls.) I think the tackle should have been taken at #96 or they should have packaged the 5th and a 7th to move up for Meredith, they obviously just won't go after guys with questionable passion and motor.I read it as "and that may be in round 4-5" As in they won't take an O-lineman until 4-5. This is my thinking, too. If Summers sticks, Davis is likely gone and we'll have an outstanding set of pass-catchers coming out of the backfield.Summers is a FB.Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of Carey Davis.I understand Burnett. LinkQ: Will your pick possibly be a center?
A: Don’t know if there is one left that could come in and really compete.
Q: How are [Mike Wallace's] hands?
A: Excellent!

Positives: Tall with good build and length inside. ... Fair straight-ahead speed when closing on the ball. ... Stands up his man and falls off to wrap up backs coming through the hole. ... Anchors well to hold up double-team blocks. ... Gets great push to collapse the pocket in passing situations, keeps his arms extended and legs churning. ... Threat to impact passing lanes and block field goals using his push, height and length. ... Big in the weight room. Negatives: One-year starter. ... A bit soft in the middle. ... Offensive linemen use his height to their advantage, cutting him down like a tree although he is adequate recovering. ... Slow off the snap and takes time to get his body going forward. ... Plays with his head down at times, minimizing his awareness. ... Needs a stronger punch. ... Inconsistent in his push and hustle. ... Does not change direction quickly, will get ridden out of plays too easily. ... Inconsistent shedding blocks inside even if much bigger than his opponent. ... Stamina and work ethic are issues. ... Missed first half of the 2006 season with a torn triceps muscle.
Steelers drafts aren't supposed to be sexy. They filled alot of needs in the draft. The DE/DT's desperately needed an infusion of young talent. Hood is an "energizer" bunny who is probably the heir apparent to Keisel at DE. He's big, fast and doesnt take any plays off. DT Harris, who knows, but he has the measurables to put on some bulk (6'5") and fill in at NT when Hampton leaves. In any case, should be an instant contributor to ST.CB was incredibly weak beforehand. Now, with Ratliff, Lewis, and Burnett added, it is now much much stronger. The KR/PR was awful last season (minus work by Santonio). They added 2 great options in Mike Wallace and Joe Burnett. Wallace also fills a need at WR4, while Burnett can compete for #4-5 CB.The Steelers needed another versatile OL-man with T. Essex (WHO could step in for Starks possibly if he continues to develop). They get Urbik, a solid, blue-collar player he has the versatility to play T or G, and possibly C. Not to mention they still have Hills that can play T.They needed a true GL back. Frank "the Tank" is a powerful, big man who can play FB, but also RB in certain situations. He was UNLV's leading reciver and is 240 lbs. Quoting his interview, "... if I didnt like to score TD's, I probably would've been an LB." He also didnt describe himself as a "football player", rather than a FB or HB... who loves to make big hits... and wants to do whatever is best for the team." Sounds like a Steeler to me.and oh yeah, they have 2 more picks left.Meh. Overall grade: CThey clearly drafted for need addressing D-line, CB, WR and the return game, though they still ignored the LT position which forces us to spend big bucks next year on one.
this team won the super bowl with the toughest schedule, and now they have the easiest, and so they obviously are considered contenders once again. they had holes and they patched them, and the players they got weren't reaches. i don't see how any steeler fan can be unhappy with this draft. a C is too low a grade. i think a B is more like it.Steelers drafts aren't supposed to be sexy. They filled alot of needs in the draft. Shipley - GREAT pick - I think this guy can make the team as a 7th rounder.
Love getting Shipley here. Still hate the gaping wound at LT, but I'll bump this to B- with Shipley. If they get Cadogan or Murtha with their last pick, I might bump it to B
