I'm not as worried as I probably should be, only because I think it will be important to get Ziggy in there. Now is as good a time as any. He showed alot during preseason.

I understand they will be rotating some guys but I think either they will eventually go to Ziggy most of the time based on his pedigree or Ziggy will downright win the spot through his play.
Primarily against 2nd team and scout team linemen. Personally, I think Kirschke gets the vast majority of the snaps as long as he's healthy.
Yep. There will certainly be a rotation, but Kirschke is the new starter.I don't think Ziggy lacks anything talent wise, but he's got to learn the nuances of the 3-4 DE position before his time truly comes.

Tough way to get younger, but maybe good for the futre?

This is what I'm thinking, too. At least it happened while Harris was sitting out there on the PS for us to snipe. I'm guessing this may be Kirschke's last season and Hampton's status is still up in the air, so if Harris works out well, there should be a roster spot open for him next year through attrition.
I didn't even realize you could sign a player off of someone else's practice squad.

You can as long as you sign them to your active roster. I believe the rule is that the signing team has to keep the player on its roster for at least 3 weeks, but it can still deactivate the player on gameday to get below the 53 man limit.

Good test of Mendenhall this week against a tough defensive front. Pessimistically, I wouldn't be surprised to see playing time/success shift a bit against the Vikings, bypass Parker and go to Moore as he plays a Ray Rice role.

Mendenhall has actually looked quite comfortable as a receiver coming out of the backfield the last 3-4 weeks, but I agree with you. Both he AND Moore will be involved heavily in the passing game if the Steelers are smart. The Vikings clearly have coverage issues in the short middle zone/flats. I haven't watched them that closely, but I'm assuming that their LBs are probably sloooow? Or is it merely schematic? Either way, that should be a big time "in favor" matchup for Pittsburgh with the "killer M's" of Moore/Mendenhall/Miller. We'll see whether they try and exploit it or not.

In the "Peterson projections week 7" thread, it was mentioned that Heinz Field is getting re-sodded. I'm thinking that if the field is soft at all, that heavily favors the Steeler passing game by slowing the pass rush and making footing more difficult for DBs.

agree im expecting a big game for mendy against his former team. if winfields out and it looks like he is i can see wallace and santonio coming up with some big plays

I really hope Clark and the Steelers are smart about this and he sits out the Denver game.

Steelers' Clark: Docs say I can play at Denver

Saturday, October 31, 2009

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers safety Ryan Clark said today he's been cleared by doctors to play but remains unsure whether he will take the field in Denver a week from tomorrow.

"Basically, I've been cleared by all the doctors but the decision still hasn't been made," Clark said this afternoon in an interview on ESPN Radio 1250. "We still have time. Obviously it's a Monday night game, so it's a long way from now."

Clark has sickle-cell trait and his blood reacted so poorly in the exertion of playing in the thin Denver air with the Steelers in 2007 that he became almost deathly ill after the game. He wound up having his spleen and gall bladder removed, lost 30 pounds and missed the second half of the 2007 season.

He's been consulting with his doctors for a while about whether he can play in Denver again. He said he will practice all week and at some point decide whether to play.

"Coach and I have talked about it, the doctors talked abut it, my wife and I. We'll figure it out," Clark said in the radio interview. "I'll be there either way. I'll be at the game.

"When the decision is made, I'll let coach decide when to tell the media and everybody whether or not I'm going to play, and I'm going to kind of stay out of it from that standpoint, but I will make the decision.

"If we find out there is a risk, then I'm not going to play. Unless I can be told, 'Hey, you're fine, there's nothing going to happen to any other organs,' then I'm going to play, I'll go try to hurt people and have a great time.

"But if there are any unsure moments about it, I'll sit on the sidelines and wear a hat and coach."

Clark gave an interesting reason why he wants to play in Denver.

"I think kind of the competitor in me, the ego of a football player, it's not so much I want to go beat the Broncos, as I would like to come back fully from a situation that brught me near death and kind of conquer playing in a place that made me ill in that kind of way.

"But you have to take yourself out of it from that standpoint, realize you do have children, you do have a life and you have a career that you would like to be long, so you want to come out healthy."

While he said doctors may have cleared him, they still have not done so to his satisfaction.

"That's understanding the situation enough to know nothing's going to happen to me," Clark explained. "I mean, you can hear certain things, they can put papers in front of you and tests in front of you, but until you're completely comfortable with what you're hearing, it's going to be a tough decision.

"And right now I haven't taken in enough information to make a decision either way."

Wait till the Steeler haters/masses here at FBG get around to seeing this. :lmao:

"Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward has once again been voted the dirtiest player in the NFL.

Ward received more than 11 percent of the vote to retain his title.

The Sports Illustrated poll was voted on by other NFL player.

Albert Haynesworth, of the Washington Redskins, and former Steeler Joey Porter tied for the second dirtiest players in the league with Roy Williams, of the Cincinnati Bengals, behind them."

According to the Tomlin presser Carey Davis was the only significant injury last night so we should be relatively healthy going into the Bengals game. Clark will obviously back and hopefully Timmons and Kirshke can return as well. Don't be surprised if a number of Steeler veterans have light duty due to the short week.

Really looking forward to the game this week.

That was awesome. I went to the game against Minnesota and was happy the song was played. It energized the crowd, but now I know the reason why. Itunes just made another $1.29 from me!

Tomlin said "popped a hamstring."

A few thoughts...

I forget who said it but one of the analysts on either ESPN or NFL Net made a great comment after the game... it speaks volumes about the Steelers that they went into Denver, did nothing in the first half, allowed a sack/fumble/TD and threw a redzone INT in the 2nd half and yet still won convincingly.

I was concerned at halftime that the D would wear down but the O really stepped up in the 2nd half and controlled the clock. Credit Arians/Ben for sticking with Mendenhall. Steve Young made the point that if the Steelers run the ball like that nobody will beat them.

I thought Mendenhall was the star of the game. He takes what's there, powers through tackles and also has the ability to make a big play. Seemed like the Steelers had plenty of 3rd and shorts whereas Parker frequently leads to 3rd and 8. I still worry about the fumbles with him, I hope they continue to work with him on security.

Maybe the Aaron Smith injury will hurt this week but so far the Steelers haven't missed a beat against some pretty good rushing attacks. Looking at the most likely playoff opponents (NE, IND, SD, DEN)...only Cincy has a real chance to run the ball. I'm anxious to see how Benson fares with Polamalu back this week.

I get a little ticked at the cushion Willie Gay seems to continually give but it didn't hurt them last night.

I've been really impressed with Keyaron Fox. I'll be interested to see what his role is when Timmons is healthy. I suspect he will continue to have some role as a run-stopper.

Did Sweed have another drop or was that a bad throw?

Good to see Holmes step up against a big-time corner. He has his moments but the guy seems to rise to the occasion in big games.

What was up with Jeff Reed's short kick-off and Logan's returns from deep in the end zone? Sepulveda is light years ahead of Mitch Berger. Loved his flying tackle on Eddie Royal too.

Loved how the Steelers finished the game. Ward's TD and Harrison's TKO on Buckhalter.

Going out on a limb here but with the maturation of Ben, additions of Mendenhall & Wallace and the improved play on the OL this team will be better than the recent SB winners. Time will tell. Got to stay healthy.

Time will tell. Got to stay healthy.
And that's maybe the craziest part of them sitting here at 6-2....they HAVEN'T stayed healthy. At all.If they can get everyone healed back up near 100% on defense that CAN be(i.e. other than Smith) for the stretch, and Ben doesn't miss any time, they could really make some noise.

I get a little ticked at the cushion Willie Gay seems to continually give but it didn't hurt them last night.

I think they were trying to keep everything in front of them with Carter back there, not allowing the deep ball, and it worked out pretty good in the end.

I've been really impressed with Keyaron Fox. I'll be interested to see what his role is when Timmons is healthy. I suspect he will continue to have some role as a run-stopper.

I think he is a better pure ILB than Timmons, more in the Foote mold, but it's a good problem to have.

Did Sweed have another drop or was that a bad throw?

Bad pass

Tomlin said today that Polamalu's injury (PCL) isn't that serious though he will be listed as "questionable at best" for this week. It sounds like he'll sit this week but be back in time for the Baltimore game. Kirshke is supposed to return to practice so that is good news.

Logan will still return kicks but LB Donovan Woods will likely be activated to help out on the return coverage teams.

I was feeling pretty sour after the Cincy loss and Troy's latest injury. But 48 hours later things don't seem so bad. Looking at the silver lining the Steelers will be back under the radar with most thinking the division belongs to Cincy now. Hopefully that will motivate the team. I think the Steelers could make things very interesting if they can win at Baltimore in 2 weeks. Cincy has a cakewalk the next 3 weeks but closes the year with three tough games in their final four: @Min, @SD, @NYJ.

I keep hearing that this Cincy team is different from years past, but something just tells me they drop at least one that they shouldn't(KC,DET,OAK) and at least 1 of those tough road games. It certainly doesn't look good, but I don't think this division is locked up. Especially with Benson out.The two games vs. Baltimore will be huuuuuge now.

The Post Gaszette reports backup LB Arnold Harrison is the first confirmed victim of the three touchdowns scored against the Steelers kickoff team. The Steelers today released Harrison, who has been with the team off and on since 2005. They replaced him on the roster with LB Donovan Woods from their practice squad.

They need to get Logan off the coverage units too. I know they're throwing him out there because of his speed, but his size is definitely a liability when it comes to trying to get through guys to make tackles. He's been "okay" returning kicks, but nowhere near what he was in training camp. I'm about ready to see that roster spot go to someone who may actually be able to contribute in some other way and just let Wallace and Moore return kicks and punts.

Ligashesky needs to start updating his resume now. 2 out of 3 years his ST units have been terribad. Last year was okay, but Tomlin took a "personal interest" in the STs in training camp. Methinkst he needs to "get personal" again quickly.(Or rather, perhaps he finally is with the Woods signing/Harrison removal, etc.)

I second that. Cincy is always good for dropping a game they shouldn't. I say Oakland beats them.

It's not quite the same situation, but I keep thinking about that Steeler loss to Cincy at Pittsburgh in 2005. At the time, it was so devastating, the team was 7-5 and most experts doubted they would make the playoffs.

We all know what happened next. The run started with a home game in the snow against the Bears, a playoff team. It may be one of my favorite Steeler games ever. That was the last great moment for the Bus.

The Steelers are definitely in decent shape as their remaining schedule does not look too bad. The two key games are those against Baltimore who appear to be having bigger issues than the Steelers. The game against the Ravens in two weeks is huge. A win there and they could deliver the blow that knocks the Ravens out of the playoffa.

As far as their kickoff coverage woes I think Reed is a major part of the problem. I find it hard to believe the Steelers cannot find someone that can kick a ball into the endzone on a consistent basis. Reeds kickoffs are awful.

Yeah but Reed makes up for it with his excellent tackling ability.

Yes the season is probably lost - the team lost it's way - etc.

But I'm still going to give me and my family a XMAS present and come up and see the Ravens game this year. I'm a lifelong fan and I DON"T CARE that we are currently not performing. I've never been to a game and it's what I'm going to do. I also will visit some pretty old relatives who have not met my son so it's going to be a special trip for many.

First - I assume we can get tix outside the game? I know down here in NC Charlotte games are easy to get it. Just go - plenty of tix for sale outside. Will that be the case here?

We plan to come up XMAS night or the day after and stay for the game and visit/sight see.

I'd love some help/advice from other members here. My entire family is from the city - my dad worked the steel mills long ago and drove a street car. I'd list my email but...

TIA

-ken

Scalpers will be plentiful and you should be able to get a decent price. I doubt you will have any problems getting tickets especially if the weather is bad. That said I would check the Steelers website in the ticket exchange. I imagine the asking price has come way down and you don't have to worry about counterfeit tickets.ETA: I will be there too and while the playoffs aren't in the cards the Baltimore games are always phsyical and it would be nice to hurt their chances.

The Stillers are so close to a Top 10 draft pick... it's a bit scary & very disappointing.

If they end up with a Top 10 pick, and Okung slides to #5... the front office seriously needs to consider a move up.

As soon as the Steelers needed to win out to make the playoffs, I came to the conclusion "Oh well, they'll get a good draft pick." Top 12 would be great. This team is much better than their record indicates, and high draft picks could set them up for a lot of success in the next couple of years.

Will that be the case here?We plan to come up XMAS night or the day after and stay for the game and visit/sight see.I'd love some help/advice from other members here. My entire family is from the city - my dad worked the steel mills long ago and drove a street car. I'd list my email but...TIA-ken
I bought 3 tickets off of stubhub for $50 a piece.

Non Football postYes the season is probably lost - the team lost it's way - etc.But I'm still going to give me and my family a XMAS present and come up and see the Ravens game this year. I'm a lifelong fan and I DON"T CARE that we are currently not performing. I've never been to a game and it's what I'm going to do.
