Steelers sign linebacker Fox

Monday, April 06, 2009

Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers signed another one of their own free agents today when Keyaron Fox came to terms on a two-year contract for $1.8 million.

Fox, a backup linebacker and one of their best special teams players, received a $380,000 signing bonus. Fox signed a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent from Kansas City last year.

I like this signing. Fox was a beast on special teams.

Steelers Offer Leftwich 2-Year Deal

The Steelers issued a contract offer this week to quarterback Byron Leftwich, who spent yesterday visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The two-year offer from the Steelers is close to minimum wage for Leftwich, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The minimum for him would be $620,000 in 2009 and $755,000 in '10.

Leftwich, though, prefers a one-year contract if he returns to the Steelers. He signed a one-year contract with them in August after Charlie Batch's clavicle was broken in a preseason game.

Leftwich and Batch are unrestricted free agents, and coach Mike Tomlin said he'd like to have both return. Batch has continued to work out with the Steelers this spring; Leftwich has been working out in Florida.

Leftwich's visit to the Buccaneers was his second in less than a week. He visited the Washington Redskins Friday.

why don't the steelers sign guys like Fox to longer deals? if he turns out to be the next James Harrison, then we've got a pro bowler on the cheap. if he's not, the steelers can cut him since the contracts aren't guaranteed. maybe it's just that Fox wouldn't sign a long term deal paying him *only* $1million per?

Looks like we're close to an agreement with Harrison:

Agent: Harrison 'very close' to new contract with Steelers

The agent for outside linebacker James Harrison said he and the Steelers are "very close" to a new contract that would keep the 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year in Pittsburgh well beyond the 2009 season.

Harrison is going into the final year of his contract and his agent, Bill Parise, and the Steelers have been working toward a long-term deal since February.

An agreement between the two sides could come as early as next week.

They can't force players to sign any deal they would like.

:lmao:

Steelers sign James Harrison to 6 year deal

The Steelers have signed linebacker James Harrrison to a new contract that will pay him $51.175 million over the next six years.

Harrison, the NFL's 2008 defensive player of the year, will receive $20 million in bonus money.

An official announcement will be made Tuesday at a news conference.

Harrison would have been going into the final year of a contract.

"We are quite happy, as you can imagine," Harrison's Beaver County-based agent, Bill Parise said. "We are happy that James will remain in Pittsburgh and this contract is certainly representative of a great marriage between a great franchise and a great football player."

Harrison, who will turn 31 on May 4, has had quite a spike in his career since signing with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He was cut a few times by the Steelers, briefly signed by the Baltimore Ravens and spent time in NFL Europe before settling in with the Steelers, becoming a regular contributor toward the end of the 2004 season.

In Super Bowl XLIII in February, Harrison turned in the longest play in Super Bowl history, returning an interception 100 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half in what would become a 27-23 victory against the Cardinals.

"The play in the Super Bowl just let other people, who might not see it all the time, realize what James Harrison has been doing all along since getting his chance," Parise said.

Five more college prospects visit the Steelers

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Five more college prospects are scheduled to visit the Steelers today as they continue to prepare for the April 25-26 NFL draft.

The five are center Max Unger of Oregon, cornerback Vontae Davis of Illinois, defensive tackles Dorell Scott of Clemson and Sammie Lee Hill of Stillman, and guard Louis Vasquez of Texas Tech.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Pretty obvious the Steelers are looking hard at o-line (all positions), CB, and WR/KR as the major priorities in the draft.

Steelers 2009 schedule below. Five prime time games, ten 1:00 games and one 4:00 game. Having a BYE in week 8 is kinda nice. The Ravens asked the NFL not to play a prime-time game in Pitt this season and got their wish -- instead the Steelers play a prime-time game in Baltimore. Of course the NFL could move the time of the Ravens in Pittsburgh as part of the flex-echeduling though I think it is unlikely they would have both Pitt-Balt games in prime time.

Thursday, Sept. 10 -- TENNESSEE, 8:30 p.m.Sunday, Sept. 20 -- at Chicago, 4:15 p.m.Sunday, Sept. 27 -- at Cincinnati, 1 p.m.Sunday, Oct. 4 -- SAN DIEGO, 8:20 p.m.Sunday, Oct. 11 -- at Detroit, 1 p.m.Sunday, Oct. 18 -- CLEVELAND, 1 p.m.Sunday, Oct. 25 -- MINNESOTA, 4:15 p.m.Nov. 1 -- IdleMonday, Nov. 9 -- at Denver, 8:30 p.m.Sunday, Nov. 15 -- CINCINNATI, 1 p.m.Sunday, Nov. 22 -- at Kansas City, 1 p.m.Sunday, Nov. 29 -- at Baltimore, 8:20 p.m.Sunday, Dec. 6 -- OAKLAND, 1 p.m.Thursday, Dec. 10 -- at Cleveland, 8:20 p.m.Sunday, Dec. 20 -- GREEN BAY, 1 p.m.Sunday, Dec. 27 -- BALTIMORE, 1 p.m.Sunday, Jan. 3 -- at Miami, 1 p.m.

Looks like cake compared to last year, but as we all know, we don't know squat right now. :popcorn:Realistic chance of going into the bye at 7-0 if they can topple Tennessee in the opener and get by a rebuilt Chicago team on the road.

Preliminary plans are underway to make a pilgrimage to Arrowhead in November. :goodposting:

Thursday, Sept. 10 -- TENNESSEE, 8:30 p.m. -- Tough game to open with. National spotlight. Just have a bad feeling about this one.

Sunday, Sept. 20 -- at Chicago, 4:15 p.m. -- Love that we get them early as Cutler will be further along down the line.

Sunday, Sept. 27 -- at Cincinnati, 1 p.m. -- They're going to be better and this won't be an easy game, but should pull it out.

Sunday, Oct. 4 -- SAN DIEGO, 8:20 p.m. -- At home prime time, similar to the opener, but I think we match up well with them.

Sunday, Oct. 11 -- at Detroit, 1 p.m. -- bad team

Sunday, Oct. 18 -- CLEVELAND, 1 p.m. -- might be a worse team

Sunday, Oct. 25 -- MINNESOTA, 4:15 p.m. -- if this was on the road, I'm not sure we win, but should at home.

Nov. 1 -- Idle

Monday, Nov. 9 -- at Denver, 8:30 p.m. -- team in comlete flux, Monday night should get us the win even on the road

Sunday, Nov. 15 -- CINCINNATI, 1 p.m. -- this ones at home, we should win

Sunday, Nov. 22 -- at Kansas City, 1 p.m. -- think they'll be better than most think, could slip up here

Sunday, Nov. 29 -- at Baltimore, 8:20 p.m. -- tough, tough game. Have to assume a loss

Sunday, Dec. 6 -- OAKLAND, 1 p.m. -- Not sure they're ever going to be good again.

Thursday, Dec. 10 -- at Cleveland, 8:20 p.m. -- easy win

Sunday, Dec. 20 -- GREEN BAY, 1 p.m. -- tough game, but at home, could slip here as well.

Sunday, Dec. 27 -- BALTIMORE, 1 p.m. -- 50/50 hoping to pull one out at home

Sunday, Jan. 3 -- at Miami, 1 p.m. -- they'll be thinking of their vacations by the time this one comes around

All in all, probably 12-4.

The games against Baltimore, SD, and TEN should be tough; but I do not believe it is out of the realm of possibility of a 13-3, 14-2, 15-1, or (gasp) 16-0 season. At the very least, 12-4. I personally think anything less than 11-5 would be a "disappointing" season.

This is a great chance to repeat before the overhaul begins for the 2010 season (lots of players with one year left on their contract are going to be coming up for FA)

What's that old saying? Things are never as bad or as good as they seem?

I think we be AFC contenders this year but predicting 12 wins is a bit on the optimistic side IMO.

Hard to see them winning less than 12 games IF Roethlisberger stays healthy. I'd bet they're favorites in all the home games and can't imagine they'll be dogs in more than 1-2 away games.

Five more college prospects visit Steelers

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Five more college prospects are visiting the Steelers today: cornerback Alphonso Smith of Wake Forest, safety Louis Delmas of Western Michigan, defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert of San Jose State, wide reciever Jason Chery of Louisiana-Lafayette, and defensive end Brandon Long of Michigan State.

The Steelers will have entertained up to 30 college prospects at their facility when they end the visits this week.

AND if they don't play with the same type of post-Super Bowl malaise they did in '06.

This is more my concern. We were all salivating when the '06 schedule was release, if memory serves.

I don't think Tomlin will mail it in the way Cowher did. I agree with Ahrn...what seems to be an easy schedule now may not be as easy as we perceive it. 10 wins should be a reasonable mark. Should win the division, but don't take it for granted. My concern, as always....

If Roethlisberger stays healthy they should win the division. I wouldn't speculate on anything beyond that.

I think the whole team was finally relieved to get over that hump, it took a long time and seemed like it would never happen, but I don't see the any letdown like '06 for this group. They need to protect Ben better, period, end of story.

I like Russell and have been pulling for him since we picked him up. Wonder what the backstory is here. Definitely looks like we'll have a spot for a short-yardage specialist now.

Gary Russell, who showed promise last season as a short-yardage back, has been released by the Steelers.

Russell played parts of two seasons with the Steelers after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent.

Last season, the 5-11, 215-pounder rushed for 77 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries.

He had a rushing touchdown in the Steelers' 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

From a FF perspective, this release is either going to raise FWP's stock or make Mendenhall a MUCH more coveted player than previously expected. I guess the preseason will tell the tale there.

I think he was the odd man out. With Parker, Mendenhall, Mewelde, w/ Carey Davis, and McHugh as the "blocking backs", and the possiblity about the team bringing in a "true" fullback in the draft, I think he was expendable.

I thought he did a great job in limited duty; he'll probably land on someone's roster by the end of May.

I wouldnt be suprised if Davis is gone next.

Yep -- I was expecting Davis to be the first guy gone.

I'd have certainly gave Davis the heave-ho first over Gary, but that's just me.

If the love the team seems to have for Frank Summers is legit, Carey Davis may want to start getting his affairs in Pittsburgh in order now, just in case.

I guess we could take this to mean the Steelers intend to do something about finding a legit KR before the season too. Whether it's someone on the roster yet, the cat from the CFL maybe?, or whoever.

Dale Lolley's take on Russell's release - a cap move?

Steelers release Russell

In an interesting move Thursday, the Steelers released running back Gary Russell, their primary kickoff return man and short-yardage specialist in 2008.

The move was announced at the same time as the team announced it had re-signed quarterback Charlie Batch.

It's likely that this was a salary cap move. With the signings of James Harrison and Batch this week, the Steelers had to be tight against the cap.

Russell wasn't making a lot of money, but the $450,000 or so in base salary he would have earned was likely used to sign Batch.

It also shows how much confidence the Steelers have that running back Rashard Mendenhall will be completely healed from the broken shoulder he suffered early in the 2008 season.

Interesting article this morning from Behind The Steel Curtain featuring an interview with former LT Leon Searcy. Searcy originally did the interview with ProCanes, a University of Miami site, but he also spoke at length about the Steelers. Because he bolted for JAX at the height of his career, I've always thought of Searcy as a great player but probably not really a Steeler at heart. Well, an older, wiser Searcy has an compelling story to tell about that, and about his loyalties.

I was tipped off to this interview with former Steelers and Miami Hurricanes DL Leon Searcy in the comments section of a previous post. The subject at hand then I believe was agent Drew Rosenhaus. Anyway, below is a chunk of a recent interview conducted by Miami Hurricanes website ProCanes with Searcy that touches upon the difference between how the Steelers organization treated him and his family after his playing days, and the advice he'd give to young players in their mid 20s about to sign their second contract in the league.

pC; You went to the Steelers, the Jaguars, Ravens and Dolphins. What was your favorite stop?

LS: My favorite stop was Pittsburgh. I love being a Steeler. Everything about it. The hard-nosed, tough, hardhat, coming to work everyday lunch pail attitude, the Steelers exempted, I loved everything about it. Coach Cowher was an awesome coach, very player friendly. He loved winning, hated losing, tough, hard-nosed. I came in with Cowher, I was his first pick in 1992. Everything about being a Steeler, I enjoy.

pC: Do you follow the NFL now? You follow a team?

LS: I follow the Steelers. I played for a couple of teams but the Steelers seem to be the only ones interested in me after football. They contacted me last year because it was the 75th anniversary of the Steelers franchise and they called me and said that I made the all 90s team and they wanted me to come. They send my son stuff and stay in contact with him. The Jaguars, I have yet to hear from them and they were my most recent team.

pC: Why did you end up going to the Jaguars?

LS: This is a funny story. I’m a free agent just out of the Super Bowl. My agent is Drew Rosenhaus, enough said there. I’m a little cocky and I’m in the Bahamas. I’m resting. Drew Rosenhaus calls me and says ‘Leon we have a deal on the table.’ I say from the Steelers? And he says ‘no from Jaguars.’ And I said the Jaguars? Come on now.

This is why I left Pittsburgh. Drew Rosenhaus got the Steelers on the phone. Drew told me at the time that the money we were asking from Pittsburgh didn’t think I deserved it. You’ve got to remember at the time, I am 24, 25, a pro bowler and teams are telling me that I don’t deserve [the money]. He said ‘Pittsburgh doesn’t think you deserve the kind money you are asking for.’ They said you’re too young. I said I don’t believe you, you’re lying. So Drew got them on the phone, and I am on the phone listening. Drew is ranting and raving and saying Leon is going to leave and they’re saying we don’t care we have someone to replace him. So that was probably the worst thing that could have happened to me.

pC: They didn’t know you were on the phone?

LS: No. They didn’t. They didn’t know I was on the phone and Drew negotiated with them. You don’t want to hear negotiations. For one, I’m 25 years old, you don’t understand the business. His job is to get as much money as he can and their job is to keep as much and we’re supposed to meet somewhere in the middle. But Drew did not explain that to me. He just explained that they don’t want you for the money you’re asking for. So, I’m on the phone and I’m hearing them say Leon is only a starter for us for 3 years and we can’t give him that kind of money because Dermontti Dawson is this and he will be a future Hall of Famer. We love the kid but we can’t pay him to be the highest offensive lineman.

So I am listening to this. I am fuming mad. I said the hell with Pittsburgh. I’ll go somewhere else and prove myself. As soon as we hung up the phone, Drew had the Jaguars right there. He had already staged the whole thing because the Jaguars wanted to make me the highest paid offensive linemen in the NFL at that time. So, Drew said don’t worry about them, I’ve got a team that wants to make you the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL and I said who’s that? He said the Jacksonville Jaguars. I said, let’s go. I was fuming mad from that point on but I didn’t understand the nature of the business. That’s how the business is. I would advise any guy who is a free agent, that is young to not listen to the negotiations between your agent and the team. They want to strip you down and he’s going to build you up and they’ve got to meet somewhere in the middle. You couldn’t tell me that, not at the time. The way they were stripping me down. He can’t do this, he can’t do that, he’s got limitations. It was so tempting to just say something on the phone. I was holding it in.

Click here to read the rest of the very interesting and candid interview with Searcy - much of which is about his thoughts on The U, but also containing a few other Steelers related anecdots.

A very good indication of this is that Defensive Backs and Offensive Linemen (Namely C/G) are going to be the main focuses. With DL/LB/WR later in the draft

Not sure I am buying this. There were less productive players that count more against the cap that could have been released. My guess is that there is another reason why Russell was let go.

read some 5th hand rumor from a guys dentist who knows a mailman of the guy who used to mow Russell's uncle's lawn:

That Russells roommate in ohio just got popped for some kind of drug activity/dealing and there's concern it may implicate GR. I repeat: Nothing but complete, worthless, unsubstantiated rumor.

I'm assuming the reports of criminal activity are true as he has just been picked up off of waivers by the Bengals.
