***OFFICIAL*** Steelers 2012 Thread (2 Viewers)

You guys bicker more than the Steelers FO.Can we now get back to me talking about how we need to draft linemen?
There we go IB!The way the Senior Bowl went, it looks like Cordy Glenn is moving up the mocks to our spot at #24 probably much to your delight. I'd personally rather see a DT like Dontari Poe there but if Glenn is the pick I could live with it. I think the top 3 priorities are a top 3 OG, top NT or BPA (aside from QB/WR)We'll see how the prospects look at the combine to get a good grasp of the list of possible names we could hear come April.

As discussed earlier in the thread, I think the Steelers should employ a proper full back next season, to sure up an inconsistent running game. Not that I have anything against Johnson, but he's more of a blocking TE than a FB. I think they have to keep Mendy, unless his progress post surgery is unsatisfactory (and that is terrible to say). Agree with hank that both sides of the line need addressed, but this has been an ongoing issue. Ben has only one more leg to lose...

Would you guys be on board with another pot smoker if Dre Kirkpatrick fell to 24? He was viewed as a top 15 and potentially top 10 pick before he got caught green handed. CB is not as big of a need as a nose and an ILB (or we could just shift to a 4-3 and solve that pretty easily), and Cordy is looking very nice to me but I have seen him mocked several times to go in the top 20. Dont'a Hightower scares me a little. LBs often look very good when playing behind very good D lines.

Absolutely. No hesitations about him. Perfect fit for Lebeaus D.Really hoping one of Kirkparick, Glenn, Adams, or Hightower are there at 24.

Even if they have a FB on the roster, I don't see them suing one much. The WR's are just too good to not use 3WR sets most of the time.

Depends on who else was there, but put me in the best player (who isn't a QB, TE or WR) available camp. The biggest needs are at OL, NT, and ILB, but they could use players at S and CB for sure.

Too true. Apologies.A starting caliber LG would do my mood a world of good.
Ditto. Sorry. Truce.Steelers rarely, if ever, trade up in the draft. But maybe that time has come. And I'm ok with drafting an O-line guy with a little baggage simply because very few prospects are squeaky clean. Besides, Plaxico and Santonio were high choices (fill in your own punch line) whose talents presumably outweighed the negatives in the eyes of the Pgh draft room. Neither became a choir boy, and their present NY teammates despise them. I would aim for the best O-line player and make some calls about the cost of moving up.

They have too many needs to trade up. I would think trading down would make more sense.

Id love to have Dre, but if the Steelers would "take a chance" and draft him of all teams, why wouldnt others? I still dont see him dropping out of the top 15, Id be shocked if he fell out of the top 20.I'll take any of these guys though, as well as Peter Konz.

I suppose they could be waiting to interview one of the coaches from the Super Bowl participants. That makes about as much sense as anything else.
Gilbride back in the Burgh?
You know that has zero chance of happening.

I've heard one person mention that Mike Sullivan(the Giants QBs coach) may be someone they'd like to talk to. Little veracity to that rumor though, IMO, since it was "just some guy" who was saying it as far as I know.

At this point, I'm guessing they've probably made their decision(and it'll likely be to promote Fichtner), but they weren't going to announce it with less than a week left before the SB. Not that anyone outside of Pittsburgh would care much, but the Steelers wouldn't do anything to steal any of the shine from the Giants/Maras this week.

Totally agree that there is only the most miniscule chance Dre falls. Just responding to the scenario. Not sold on Konz at 24. After DeCastro I don't see a pure IOL I'd take that early. Glenn would be my only other option and that's because he's got LT upside. It's a deep class for IOL and we should be able to get a good player at 56.

I would be happy with Glenn. I don't think he has any chance as a LT, maybe a RT. However I would want him at G, where I think he could be a pro bowler. If they want a LT, they should go Adams. I would also be happy with that pick. Or with Poe. Or somebody who falls that I don't see falling.

@albyox Alby Oxenreiter

I told you last week that Haley was the frontrunner. Now I'm told that he's been hired to replace Bruce Arians. #Steelers

Ben and Haley are either going to be best friends or completely despise each other.
I don't think anybody is best friends with Haley. I doubt this will be a move well received in the locker room.
As much as his reputation is that of a major ****, the guy has proven he can coach a pretty decent offense.I think that this move is a stark departure from the buddy/buddy Arians, into a no-nonsense-all-business Haley mode.Could be good with a relatively young offense (without looking it up, aside from Ben and Hines all the other players on offense will be <28 years old -- not including FA's)

The "courtesy" interview extended to Haley for the OC job must have been exceedingly hospitable. Pretty rare for a swerve from the FO but , hey, could have done worse, I think.

I like the Haley hiring. Did a fine job in Arizona and considering the tools he had to work with at KC did a great job there as well. Should be fun...

Other news:

TE Weslye Saunders reportedly suspended 4 games due to an "undisclosed violation" according to PFT.

I'm guessing it was probably due to a positive test for PED's.

Or pot. I was thinking he could be a big part of the offense next season -- now I am thinking he may not even be with the team in 2012.

Looks like some more free cap room, though not too much.
He was a UDFA in camp last year, I'm sure its the minimum salary

I don't think that Haley will necessarily be an ### or hated by the team. He has some fire, but so did coach Cowher (used to spit on us all the time). Maybe that is what this team needs, a little motivation from the coaching staff. I like how Tomlin is cool as a cucumber but it will be a nice contrast to see some spit flying into players faces again.

As an aside, I was looking at NY Giants home schedule (since they are going to open the season on Thursday night at home) and I saw that we are slated to head there at some point next year... possible opening night game for us?

Giants 2012 HOME Opponents:

Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers
.Eliminating crappy teams and division opponents (they rarely have SB winner play a division opponent that early), that leaves the Giants with the Saints, Packers and the Steelers for the opening night game. Considering last year's opening night game was GB vs. NO, it's a very real possibility we open there...

I think this would be a terrible over-reaction on their part if they did this. Hell, half the people who are Steeler "fans" probably dont even know this guy is on the team. This is a blip that wont even make ESPN's bottomline and can be swept under the rug pretty easily. Really liked this pickup when they made it, liked what I saw his rookie year, the guy deserves at least 1 more chance here (if in fact it was illegal drugs).

Im game. Have Rooney Mara sing the National Anthem :banned: Even though the other teams opened last year, I still think the Steelers could be 3rd on that totem pole because the NFL/Godell may favor a matchup vs the 2011 MVP & perceived favorite to win this past SB (Packers) or the team that is hosting the 2013 SB (Saints) over the Stillers.

Well maybe Haley runs things similar to Whiz so Ben doesn't have to learn a whole new language at least. I don't like Haley, but I trust Tomlin and the Steelers. If he can shut up, and call opportune plays then I am on board.

Nice, although as it said right in your link, were still way over the cap. When is Hines going to renegotiate like he said he would??? Frankly, Im surprised they havent cut at least a couple guys yet. All that Im aware of is Hoke leaving and that wasnt even because they cut him.
I don't think it will be a big deal to get comfortably under the cap. There are some costly vets that are well past their prime currently eating up a lot of cap money.

Some recent transactions, a fresh batch of receivers, O and D linemen.

01/20/2012 Signed QB Troy Smith, CB Walter McFadden, WR Tyler Beiler, WR David Gilreath, WR Derrick Williams, and WR Jimmy Young to Reserve/Future contracts.

01/18/2012 Signed OG John Malecki, TE Jamie McCoy, OT Chris Scott, OT Trevis Turner, DT Corbin Bryant, QB Jerrod Johnson, DL Mike Blanc, DT Kade Weston, LB Marshall McFadden, and DB Antonio Smith to Future/Reserve contracts

So, we were at 149 million and the cap should be about 124 million, before any moves.

6. NT Casey Hampton ($8.1 mil)

10. Chris Kemoeatu ($5.3 mil)

14. LB James Farrior ($3.8 mil)

15. LB Larry Foote ($3.6 mil)

16. T Jonathan Scott ($2.7 mil)
