***OFFICIAL*** Steelers 2012 Thread (2 Viewers)

i heard kevin colbert say on the radio that they want the option to bring mendenhall in earlier than week 6. he may or may not be ready by then, but if he is, the steelers want to use him. colbert said that if he's on the PUP list then they have no choice but to wait until week 6 but bringing him in even one game early could be meaningful considering how close the AFC North usually is. that's why Mendy came off.

yeah, none of them are ready but Starks is practicing. He'll probably see some playing time in the 3rd preseason game. Hampton isn't quite there yet but not as big of a concern (yet) since McClendon is playing so well. Mendenhall still has a ways to go. Which means some other position loses out while Mendenhall sits. They basically have to keep a spot open on the 53 for him (carrying one more rb than they might have) that could have been another body at another position while he was on PUP. When he's healthy I'd assume they would move the extra RB to the practice squad. With Ryan Clark having to sit out game 1 this gets interesting as to who they keep and how many at positions like rb, wr, db. Throw in the questions at ROLB and it's gonna be a "fun" couple of weeks.

David Gilreath looked pretty good tonight. Thought he was going to be cut in a few days

Maze, Williams, and Beiler were non-existent, Clemons wasnt far off.

After missing the first game he definitely made a name for himself last night and he was one of the 3 that Scotty Montgomery had mentioned in the interview I heard a few weeks ago. Special teams play will come into play as well. Maze certainly isn't helping his case with his play on the field. Hate hearing that Sylvester tore his MCL. Not season ending but it further weakens the LB position and he's a great player on special teams. Sounds like he might miss a game or 2.

Does anyone other than Cris Collinsworth think CBatch actually has a shot at the #2 spot? I'm thinking he might be cut actually. Go with 2 qb's (with Johnson on the practice squad). If you need him he's probably going to be available anyway.

If they cut him they should hire him as an assistant coach.

jerrod johnson has looked terrible imo and charlie has shown the ability to come in a win a game or two when called upon. i think the steelers could end up keeping just two QBs especially considering the roster spot mendenhall is eating up, but i would not count out charlie batch as a possible #3. if i was a betting man, i'd put my money on batch making the team. even so, you are right that he probably won't be the #2, leftwich will.

Did any of you happen to notice the beast that is Steve McClendon? Reportedly gained about 30 lbs of muscle and he's now pushing 320. Hampton may have hard time getting back in there. :football:

Johnson looks better now than he did in July.

i might not have seen the same angle as the original poster, but it did not look all that bad to me. fingers crossed.
No link, but local news is reporting ACL and MCL--done for the year.
that really sucks, the steelers oline is so cursed
Bound to be speculation since supposedly he hasn't had an MRI yet. Either way, he is out for quite a while. Fortunately Ramon has been playing well. More worried about the two tackle spots than anywhere else, especially Gilbert.

They do hands on tests like the anterior drawer test etc that are usually pretty accurate. Of course they have the MRI to confirm those findings (and they havent told us those findings to begin with), but based on all the reports Im guessing those tests determined it to likely be both his ACL and MCL. MRI will simply be to confirm.

Definitely torn MCL, Steelers hopeful it's not the ACL as well. He's missing half the year at a minimum.
Torn MCL, dislocated knee cap, and patellar tendon damage. Not that that's great news, but it is about as good as I expected. Dont rush him back for this year, no matter what.

It could have been much worse. Maybe he'll be back for the 2nd half of the season...
Oh, if he's 100% by week 8, week 12, by all means get him on the field, just dont risk the liklihood of re-injury/further injury by trying to have him back in 2012 or too early this year.

I am watching the NFL Network and they are saying DeCastro is out for the season. :( However they also said he tore the ACL and MCL so perhaps it is based on an old report

Steelers OG David DeCastro suffered a dislocated his knee cap, tore his medial collateral ligament and suffered some damage to patellar tendon. But his anterior cruciate ligament is intact. Adam Schefter

Bouchet is saying this morning that he does not expect the Steelers to hold a roster spot for the DeCastro because of the damage to the knee AND because the Steelers will likely be holding roster spots for Mendenhall, Harrison and possibly Worilds.

He also expects Batch is going to get cut and the team will only carry 2 QBs to save a roster spot.

You mean they will just IR him?

That is Bouchette's speculation. Since DeCastro did not report to camp on the PUP list there is no way to exclude him from the 53-man roster which is tough to do if you're just holding out hope for his return late in the season. The Steelers did this for Rod Woodson when he sustained an ACL tear in the opening game of the 1995 season and Woodson was able to play in Super Bowl XXX. However Harrison, Mendenhall, Worilds, and Hampton have all be activated from the PUP list and keeping 5 roster spots for players that can't help you right away would not be easy.

Bouchette on Twitter:

The 15 players released include linebacker Ryan Baker, defensive tackle Mike Blanc, wide receiver Paul Cox, cornerback Andre Freeman, kicker Daniel Hrapmann, linebacker Mortty Ivy (Waived/Injured List), offensive lineman Kyle Jolly, long snapper Matt Katula, tight end Jamie McCoy, cornerback Walter McFadden, tight end Justin Peelle, safety Myron Rolle, wide receiver Juamorris Stewart, defensive tackle Kade Weston and wide receiver Jimmy Young.
Thanks. No big surprises here.

Kind of surprised about the kicker (thought he might be better than suisham sp) and ivy. Don't know about his injury though so could that be a potential ir if he clears waivers?

Per Ed Bouchette Twitter, talk circulating at Steelers HQ is that they are not looking at putting G David DeCastro on IR.

Idiot Boxer's rain dance is working.

Listening to Tunch and Wolf online 970am, and they are discussing nasty injuries. This started as a result of Tunch stating several olinemen reported that they could not look at the injury as it was nasty. Tunch went as far as to say it wasn't a dislocation of the knee, but a relocation.

:X

ETA: also stated that the severity won't be determined until swelling reduces a bit.

That link says "waivers/injured list" so I suspect theyll be keeping him around.I dont even recognize half of those names so no complaints on the first cuts. Next group will be more interesting, especially at WR and S.

Time for Idiot Boxer to breakout the prayer cloth and cry out to the football gods for mercy! Hopefully it was just a knee sprain.
If I were you I.B., I would start talking to Hollywood about a movie deal. Seems like there has to be a "Wrath of the Titans" type blockbuster in the making. Big Ben is the main character. Script goes something like this:The gods hath shown their VERY SICK sense of humor by sending down a "gift" from the heaven's at the #24 pick in the 2012 NFL draft, in an apparent answer to the Steeler's faithful prayers, only to rip the heart's of those mere mortals out by strike-ithing (is that a word?) that "gift" down with a lightning bolt! I remember seeing a big sign, that a fan had made, hanging from the stands at Three Rivers back in like 2005 or so that had the caption "..#7, a gift from heaven.." with a picture of Big Ben on it. Now the gods have tried many a time, over many a season to striketh Big Ben down, even clouding and tempting his mind with the things of the world, or putting him on a motorcycle, but much to their shagrin, Ben continues to defy the odds and the gods by scraping himself up off of the floor each time they strike him down. What else have the gods planned for Ben's demise? It is starting to get to the point of being laughable, so I guess this is a "dark comedy" that we are working on here.

There's a big sign in open end zone that says "Big Ben: Godsend" that models Michaelangelo's sistine chapel mural.

The Steelers claimed Jacksonville RB DuJuan Harris off waivers today. Probably just a body for the final preseason game but cant be good news for Batch.

So what is this offense going to be like? I know Haley likes to run the ball, but the tools are much better in the passing game. I really want to like Big Ben this year. Will he get over 550 passes?

Also, there was talk about Heath Miller being more involved in the passing game. So far that has not been the case. Should I expect this to change or will he be held in to block to combat the o-line problems?
