***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (8 Viewers)

I don't hate the military theme idea at all but as someone who loves wolves I really want it to be Red Wolves

Both for the sake of the howling fans and the conservation awareness it might have

Sentinels is still better than Warriors at least

I get that Haskins improved towards the end of the year but Jones literally had more games with 4 TD-0 INT than Haskins had with 2 TD

There is no real case to be made here for year 1 at least
I dont think a case can be made that Haskins was better last season.  But after getting 1st team reps and actual playing time he did look better down the stretch.  I think he shows more promise.  But who knows.

I only care about the Redskins because I podcast the Junkies (  :bag: ) and Kornheiser.

I can honestly say that the specs of Redwolves uniforms/logos and the idea of the fight song being changed and accompanied by howls excites me.  None of the others do.

Also, all in on Scary Terry in a dynasty startup this year.  Gonna take DH too, and see what happens.

Love Sentinels. 🇺🇸
noun

a person or thing that watches or stands as if watching.

  they like to watch the other team score and make the playoffs.

Definitely prefer red tails.

Totally agree that year one isn't close.

But I do like haskins long term. Jones will probably be better than I expected.

I kind of like the dimension that Jones brings to the Giants and Haskins brings to the Redskins. Haskins was put in a no-win situation last year and COVID can't be helping his development. Jones has clearly done more as of last year, but what does that really mean? Is he a 4 TD guy or a put the ball on the floor three times guy? Time will tell.

Anything is better than rushing the naming process. That's a positive.

I think you rushed the posting process. 😋

Rushing? This has been an issue for, what, thirty years or more? They didn't have something picked out in an "In case of emergency, break glass" type of situation?
Because Snyder never wanted to change the name, the names he possibly could have used are under trademark and he doesn't have the rights to them.

I kind of like it.  Mascots are dumb.  Same color schemes and a "W" on the helmet or nothing at all even.  Minimalist.

Don't a lot of soccer "clubs" do this?

That's dumb too. Go get them. Or doesn't he have enough money or pull? Or...pick something else?
Well... because a lot of the good names are also trademarked.

That guy, Philip Martin McCaulay, is located in Virginia (according to the trademark application), and describes himself as an author and actuary on the website he set up for a few of these nicknames. There are pages for the Warriors, Monuments, Arrows, Veterans, Pandas, Founders, Federals and Red-Tailed Hawks.

The site seems to exist purely to establish or maintain the trademarks. At the top of every page is a basic title followed by one-sentence descriptions of “Number of Players,” “Scoring,” and “Winning.” It’s spectacularly low-rent, and the possibility that Snyder and the team are fighting with this guy over the new name for their 88-year-old franchise is, well, hilarious.

In the end, this feels so very Washington. Snyder spent so much time refusing to change the team’s name that he never made arrangements to protect the team itself for when the time actually came to change the name. He didn’t even do it when the team’s own quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, tweeted on July 3 that he preferred the Washington RedTails.

When did McCaulay file the trademark for the Washington RedTails? July 5, just two days later. If Snyder doesn’t get his first choice, or he has to pay a bundle for it, all he needs is a mirror to find out who to blame.

I don't mind not having a name at all.  I'd go with "Washington Burgundy and Gold" for now

The new helmets remind me of Alabama Crimson Tide.  Love the simplness

Maybe they could change the team name to an unpronounceable symbol that looks like an upside down French Horn.

The announcers could call them the Voldemorts.

yeah, kind of strange they couldn't get this right. If i were Snyder, i would have listened to the Native American tribes out there, and simply inherited one of their suggestions. A big one coming out was "Code Talkers" to honor the use of the Native American language in WW2. Would have been a way to keep the same basic mascot and colors, and would have been seen in a much better light as honoring the Native Americans and supporting the country as a whole with WW2.

Granted Code Talkers is probably too many syllables for some, and it doesn't strike fear in an opponent, but it would have made a ton of sense to honor a factual thing that contributed to the American side winning WW2

I mentioned this upthread: the movie they made about the Code Talkers was called 'Windtalkers' One word, not two.

Washington Windtalkers flows pretty smoothly, plus there's a subtle entendre dig at all those annoying windbags in Congress.

Snyder isn't paying anyone for the name.  That can be assured.  So anything trademarked is not happening.  I suspect that is the real hold up in choosing a new name.

He's the type that will spend $5M to find an un-trademarked name just so he doesn't have to fork over $100K for the trademark

Your cynicism is warranted.

They coulda gone with the Hogs & made generations of fans happy.

They could have gone with an inoffensive Indian-related name (regional tribe, etc) and made many people happy.

They could have picked just about any name & made some people happy.

Dan Snyder has enough money to hire a creative team that could have come up with 100 solid names in a matter of days. As someone mentioned above, they’ve had 30 years to work on this.

while I agree Snyder would rather spend millions than pay $100k for a ™️, I don’t think that’s what this is.

i think calling them the Washington Football TBDs (paraphrased) is just a great big middle finger to everyone from a spoiled jerk who hated being told what to do, and hated even more to be forced to do something he was told to do.

after all, he resisted the name change forever presumably for the same reason.

And in one the WFT finally got right .... Quinton Dunbar placed on commissioners exempt list - so paid but not eligible to play.  Apparently tape of his cohert in crime Baker paying off one of the witnesses.

On the "Red Tails" and "Windwalker/Codebreaker" names  - For the life of me I can't see how changing the name from one group of oppressed brown people to another group of oppressed brown people makes any sense. At all. Its comically hypocritical. If you're gonna say its because it doesn't have a skin color in the name, I mean I guess but it isn't like when the Washington franchise created the name of their team they were using it as slander. They thought enough of the "Redskins" to use their image in what they incorrectly thought was in a positive manner.

Bryce Love passed his physical, and is ready to go. Man, if that guy could return to the level he played at, at Stanford, and Guice could stay off the injury report, and so could McKissic, between AP, Guice, Love and McKissic that could be a pretty dynamic rushing offense, that would allow Haskins a whole lot of latitude in his development.

If, if, if, I know...but, it's exciting to think about.

If they get 16 man-games out of Guice and Love combined, I'd be shocked.

Lost in the shuffle of all the offseason tumoil, is one thing I"m VERY much looking forward to:

THE RETURN OF THE 4-3 DEFENSE!!!

Among many things that have popped up on the spectrum between 'flat-out wrong' and 'just doen't seem right' since Snyder took control in 1999, was the demise of the 4-3 defense in Washington.

Charles Mann/World Grant/Dave Butz/Dexter Manley

Rich Milot/Neal Olkewicz/Mel Kaufman (Monte Coleman)

Chills, I tell you. Chills.

I like Dave Butz, and I cannot lie....

Actually, this makes me wonder... If I wanted a throw back jersey, what would it say on it? BUTZ on the back and "Football Team" on the front??

Love could be the dark horse here for sure. His talent preinjury was pretty exciting

I will say i love the tone Rivera has brought.  Zero tolerance for this type of bs.

i am however growing slightly concerned about Del Rios twitter habits and how the locker room will react.

I just read about Guice.  It sounds really bad for him.  I always hope they can get their life together.
Me too, but if they already had all the incentive in the world to get their life together before this I'm not sure what's likely to change at this point in their life. Without the structure and support of a team around him(at least at the moment) I would imagine whatever demons he lives with are going to be more difficult to overcome on his own. The trope would be, "Well, now that he's bottomed out......" but when do we really know someone has hit bottom or even how they will react?

Alex smith activated.  Amazing comeback.  After watching that documentary I’m just floored that he was able to play.  I still doubt he plays but hey maybe it gives Haskins some competition.
