***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (3 Viewers)

With Kamara gone is Foreman the only RB1 type guy left? I probably have some Homer glasses on for this, but I would love to keep rooting for Donnel Pumphrey. Here in San Diego we watched him set and then break his own records every week last year. And that's at Marshall Faulk's school. He ended up finishing his career as the all-time NCAA leading rusher. Explosive playmaker. Great kid too. My GF even had him as a student for one semester. 

ETA: Meant to say as a later round like 5th or 6th

Was really hoping Jones fell to us. But this Fabian guy looks just as good. Also this Anderson guy is probably going to be a crowd favorite. His quotes are awesome. Hoping for King or Butt with this first rd pick, but could also see Perine

Wait. Your GF drafts her students, and took him in the late rounds?

 
I'm very happy about our first 2 picks. I don't know a lot about Moreau.

edit: Sounds like a good player when he heals and can play (August or so).

Sounds like a short sighted move by a lot of teams. A torn pectoral muscle should completely heal and not be an ongoing concern. First round talent in the third...? Yes, please. 

Not sure why I'm still so bitter about Doctson. Shoot, as long as these draft picks play and contribute they'll be a success.

Crazy to think that a team that is basically operating without a true GM could have such a great draft. The reach for Anderson is the only blemish in my opinion. Allen, Moreau, Perine and Rouiller were all huge steals in my eyes. Moreau is the player people keep saying Sidney Jones is, Perine is an excellent power RB, who just happened to be overshadowed by Mixon, and Rouiller was probably my favorite sleeper in this draft, outstanding run blocking guard, who should have gone 4 rounds earlier.

After reading that article someone posted in here on Anderson, I might be more excited about him than anyone else. Ok, not Allen. Hometown stud falls in the lap. So awesome. 

The knock the espn guys had on Moreau is that he only had 3 picks his entire career.  McShay said he is a great player until the ball is in the air. He has trouble locating and moving on a it. I don't know ####. Just passing that along.

 
Food for thought:  the 2014 draft, the one Bruce Allen was in charge of, looks like it was a pretty good draft.  Top picks were:

Trent Murphy

Morgan Moses

Spencer Long

Braushaud Breeland

I think he traded down to get 2 3rd round picks to get both Moses and Long.

I also recall on our Redskin thread one poster insisted that Moses was a terrible pick and would never develop into a player.

Washington Redskins: DL Jonathan Allen (17th pick) had shoulder problems at Alabama, and CB Fabian Moreau (81st) is coming off a pro day pectoral tear, but both are tremendous value picks at positions of need for this defense. Second rounder Ryan Anderson may just take suspended OLB Trent Murphy's job. And don't be the least bit surprised if fourth-round RB Samaje Perine emerges from training camp as the starter.

Washington


Washington is another team that got one of the biggest steals in the entire draft with first-round pick Jonathan Allen. If he stays healthy, I love the pick. He was my second overall selection and will help Washington’s pass rush and run defense. In the second round, Washington went for another Alabama front-seven player in linebacker Ryan Anderson. He can play inside and outside with his ability to use power and leverage.

The team needed a cornerback and found one with first-round talent in UCLA’s Fabian Moreau of UCLA. He dropped because of health, but he’s a high-end No. 2 cornerback for Washington.

The pick of running back Samaje Perine in the fourth round was one of the best on the third day of the draft. He could take over as Washington’s lead running back. Washington also smartly brought in two more safeties in Montae Nicholson and Josh Harvey-Clemons. It might be overloading the position, but Harvey-Clemons in particular brings something a little different.

I remember that too, because he was so insistent about it. Don't remember who the poster was but I'm very glad he was wrong.

 
Really happy about their first 4 picks. They had good players drop to them in at least 3 of those spots and they were smart enough to take them. Looks like a solid draft just for those 4 guys. If Nicholson can help at safety that would be a plus. Likewise with Roullier.

While it's obviously too early to judge the draft class, most pundits seem to agree that the Redskins did a nice job finding value throughout.     Very excited that we made moves to shore up the D plus picking up a RB in mid rounds that legit has a chance to get lots of playing time, if not start.

Props to Sebowski in his first draft as interim GM ...

I read some more of that 2014 thread to see what stupid things I said. This was me in May 2014. "The CB" I was referring to was Breeland. "The WR" was Grant.

I think at least 4 of their first 5 picks will make the final roster. I think Moses will take Polumbus's place as starter. I think you'll see Kerrigan inside in 4-3 passing defenses some of the time with Murphy as a LB. I think Long will make the team and bump LeRibeus, Gettis, or Chester from the roster. I don't know about the CB, but I think the WR will make the team and we can lose one of the underperformers Hankerson or Robinson.

Late to the party, but I'm very happy with our draft. Going in, I was hoping we would address the defense and then our 1st 3 picks are DL, LB, and CB. Perine sounds like he could be a good fit in the offense and could be our RB1 come Week 1. Love everything that I've read about Allen and Anderson.

For as bad as this offseason started, it really turned out to be pretty good. Only thing left to do is to show Kirk the money.

It was Milkman.  He was flipping out that The Redskins didn't draft Bitonio from Cleveland.  Moses has played 17 more games than Bitonio the last two years.

Please do this or trade the guy sooner rather than later.

 
I don't think a longterm deal with Cousins will get done. The gap between what the Skins think he's worth and what he thinks he's worth is too great, and it's become a battle of wills.

I heard Gruden on 980 this morning and if I heard correctly he said the Skins had made their offer and it was time for Cousins and agent to counter. If that's the case, Cousins doesn't even want to be here. The team made their offer quite awhile ago.

I figure he'll be gone next year and both sides will lose. The Skins will take at least a temporary hit at QB and Cousins will end up taking a stats hit on a crap team.

 
It looks to me like the skins have made it a real priority on getting younger this offseason. That very well may be an arbitrage play for losing Cousins, as in building a foundation to protect and develop a young inexperienced QB...which, strangely enough is the proper blueprint for long-term success...

Fatness, I think the consensus landing spot for Kirk is in SF with Kyle, and I firmly believe that the 49ers are going to be leaps-and-bounds better in 2018 than they are now. I believe in Kyle and Lynxh showed some unexpected draft chops this past weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if Kirk leads the 2018 9ers to the postseason, and even if not, generates some gaudy statistics running Kyle's scheme...

That might be what happens, you're right. Or he cold go to SF and they could still suck. Kyle has yet to show he can run a team, and everywhere he's been there have been 2 constants --- he's always thought he's the smartest guy in the room, and he's rubbed people the wrong way. We'll see if he knows how to built a team, and hold it together, or not.

The NFL will look a lot different a year from now. Bradford or Bridgewater might be available. We don't know what rookie QB's will look like a year from now. We don't know what other vets may be available. And we don't know what Cousins is worth to 31 teams. I have a feeling he's overestimating his worth, as are many of us, on a steady ESPN980 diet of "he has all the leverage" and "he holds all the cards". The guy threw 25 TD's and came up small in big games.

Cousins holds all the cards now. No reason for him to re-sign with a team that is trying to butt #### him. He will be in SF reunited with Shanahan as they rebuild. The niners will instantly be a force in that division once they get Cousins as WASH goes back to being the cellar dweller and looking for a franchise QB......AGAIN. What is really funny is that because they have Cousins, they will either miss out on one of the 3 QBs coming out or they will have to mortgage the future trying to trade up to get one.

They made a low ball offer going into 2016, he countered with the offer they are now presenting. Too late now. They both rolled the dice, Cousins won and they lost.

I'm still not convinced he's the QB that can carry a team through the playoffs even in a Flacco/Eli type way by going on a hot streak against playoff caliber defenses. Maybe he can in a Dilfer/Johnson type way.... but really aren't there a dozen QB's that could have won SB's in those situations? And those QB's weren't paid nearly as big a % of the teams overall salaries as Cousins will finally get signing the big extension. 

This may be the Dalton situation just turned upside down. The Bengals paid the man(with much criticism at the time btw) and it turns out he's good enough to win regular season games and get the franchise to, and sometimes past, the playoff caliber line but was CIN ever REALLY a SB threat with Dalton at QB? As things have turned out CIN would have been better off slow-rolling Dalton and ultimately moving on earlier than they have. 

If you think Cousins will make SF "a force in that division" means hover around .500..... maybe better some years I think you may be right. Maybe even get them to the playoffs eventually. But if you think Cousins will make SF a SB team I am much less convinced. And if you don't think he's a SB QB what's the point of winning 58% of your regular season games(on the high side) instead of taking your lumps and looking for that guy that CAN lead you to a SB?

In the end it's just a make-or-break year for the Redskins. Either they play better than people anticipate and go deep into the playoffs which means WAS will be willing to pay more and Cousins will be more open to staying OR they hover around .500 and likely don't win or even play in a playoff game which seems more likely at this point. Parting ways may be in the best interest of both sides, but it is curious that WAS didn't seem interested in Peterman at pick #154, Kelly at pick #235, or even Evans as an undrafted-FA. While I'm not predicting any of those guys will be a SB QB either as of right now we just don't know and if your convinced you have seen the best of the guy you've got then the unknown at a steep discount is preferable. 

 
I feel like the Skins are just going to transition tag Cousins next year. Then, the 49ers do all the negotiating and the Skins can figure out if he is worth it or not.

Transition tag: Think of this as the "you are pretty good, and we might want to keep you, but aren't willing to put a ring on you ourselves" tag. The transition designation is a one-year tender offer to a player for an amount that is the average of the top 10 salaries at the position -- as opposed to top five. It guarantees the original club the right of first refusal to match any offer the player might receive from another team, but no compensation if the team chooses not to match.

 
Well that sucks, because if we can trust what has been said this offseason, he's not going to sign long term so he's going to walk and we get nothing for him? Ughh

Well the Skins could match whatever offer comes to him. Which I could see them doing if it's reasonable.

With all the cap space SF has and the fact they didn't do much to address the QB position, I'm betting it won't be "reasonable". Unless reasonable is a ####-ton more money than they have offered him up to this point.
