Some of the [over]reactions to the Steelers game is out of control. A few points:
-What are we paying a CB $15M for if he's not going to cover the best WR? To take away half the field. Like most elite CB's in the NFL do. That's a huge advantage, and worth $15M if you can find a guy who can do it, which so far appears to be the case with Norman.
-Breeland had a good game. He was often up against one of the best WR's on one of the best offenses in the NFL, and he never really got burned. If you're one on one, the best you can hope for is to force the QB to throw perfect passes and force the WR to make tough catches, which is what happened. You need another defender in good position to truly shut someone down. A bad game looks like Breeland vs Mike Evans in last year's Tampa game. Evans was making cuts that Breeland was slow to respond to, running routes that got Breeland picked off in traffic, and just generally speeding past him at every opportunity. If we had left Norman alone with Brown the results would have been the same, and the story would have been about how we're misusing him and spending tons of money to fit a square peg into a round hole like we've always done.
-So why didn't we double Brown to take him out of the game? Probably because we have much bigger weaknesses in our defense than our secondary, which is no secret to anyone, so why is it such a surprise? I don't think it's a mistake in general to put more defenders in run support or send them to pass rush. It's what we need to do. Joe Barry might suck, I don't know, but I can't be too critical of his game plan because he just didn't have the talent to cover everything, and the Steelers did a pretty great job finding where we were weak almost on a play by play basis and going there.
I think going forward there will be games we get picked apart in the same way for the same reasons, because we play a lot of good offenses. There will be games vs not so good offenses and our corners and game plan will look Super Bowl ready. What I hope I don't see is our coaches giving in to the fan and media pressure to play Norman man to man vs the top receiver, because that won't end well and it's not the reason we lost on Monday. Going forward it would be great to add more talent on the defensive line, but I understand SMC's philosophy on building a team and I still believe it's the correct approach for long term success.
