***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (3 Viewers)

It's not completely clear to me if that's how much he wants(is expecting?), or if that how much he wants... to stay in WAS.
I think it's the later. What he wants from Washington is "more than they are willing to pay me", which led to them giving him the OK to seek a trade. I can't say I blame him for wanting out. Being told for years he had basically a cosmetic issue on his scalp and then being told one day to get hsi affairs in order would shock the hell out of anyone and not be easily forgotten.

I hope they get a 2nd rounder for him. I think they can if they wait; someone's got a glaring need they won't be able to fill, or someone will develop a glaring need before the season.

As of now this is still the NFL schedule

Saturday, 11:59 PM EST: Deadline for players to vote on proposed CBA :

Monday, 11:59 AM EST: Deadline to apply a franchise or transition tag :

Monday, Noon EST: Legal tampering window opens :

Wednesday, 4 PM EST: FA begins

Reports that Redskins want a 2nd rounder for Trent, and nobody is interested.  I think they are right asking for a 2nd rounder, but to get it Trent is going to have to lower his contract demands.  $20M per year for 3 years + a 2nd rounder  ???.  Seems like his agent has overvalued the market for his client?

If he really wants out of DC, he needs to be in the $16-17M range.  Otherwise, I think we can assume this was always about the money and not his health.

That's why it's going  to take some waiting to get maximum value for Trent. Colts just signed LT Anthony Castonzo to a two-year, $33 million contract extension.

Amari Cooper is probably going to be a FA. I never paid attention to him until he went to Dallas, but he's one of the best route-runners I've seen. Don't know how much money he wants but he's certainly worth looking at for the Skins.

I would HAPPILY break the bank to land him and a good TE in free agency, and then focus on the line and secondary in the draft.

Skins signed Wes Schweitzer  OG for 3 years 13.5M total.  I don't know much about him.  I guess to compete for Flowers spot.
The Falcons made Schweitzer a sixth-round choice in 2016. He played 46 games with 36 starts over the past three seasons. Schweitzer has played both left guard and right guard. In 2019, he appeared in 15 games with seven starts. Schweitzer played 697 offensive snaps and 49 on special teams.

John Keim . @john_keim

Will compete with Wes Martin for LG job. Schweitzer Can also play some C so would be versatile depth if doesn’t start.
In other Falcons news, they let Devonta Freeman go. I don't think he's washed up yet and he's more than decent as a WR while playing RB.

Goodbye Case, we hardly knew ye.

Adam Schefter . @AdamSchefter

Browns reached agreement with former Redskins' QB Case Keenum on a three-year, $18 million deal that includes $10 million guaranteed, per source.

About Wes Schweitzer

Brandon Thorn ✔ @BrandonThornNFL

About the same caliber as Flowers was last year. A little below middle of the pack with some nice flashes. Super physical guy and pretty good mover. Takes a lot of chances in pass pro & needs to clean up his technique (strike timing/placement). I kinda like him though.

Cowboys signed him. 5 for $100 mil

Byron Jones and James Bradberry are getting big CB deals. Dunbar is probably happy.
I kind of figured they would get ~14+Mil/season and I think that is too much based on how Rivera runs his defense. I was much more shocked that Bradley Roby got 3yr/$36mil..... but it was HOU and they may have the worst GM in the league even if he's a pretty good coach.

Still say they should sit out this first round of FA and sign several 2nd/3rd tier CB's and/or target some guys in the draft. If Dunbar expects an extension anywhere NEAR where the guys in the first paragraph got paid then they the Skins should prepare for him to sit out all season.

Supposedly WAS offered him much more. That would have been quite a coup as I'm a big Cooper fan but if the can slide back a few picks in this draft and pick up additional day 2 draft capital they could get easily find a starter across from McLaurin in this particular draft.

If they were willing to offer that much to Cooper it does make you wonder if they might be willing to deal for a high priced WR. There are rumblings that if the Rams can't unload the Gurley contract they might be willing to deal Brandon Cooks for salary cap relief. Really, there's only one O'Brien in the league to take on a contract like that and even he isn't stupid enough to take on both the Johnson AND Gurley terrible contracts. For that matter, the Rams may also be willing to part with Gerald Everett as well before he becomes a FA. Given the salary and impending FA situation the compensation in a trade may be more reasonable than most people expect. That Rams OL didn't look like the team that went to the SB and Goff certainly is NOT the same QB when he is under pressure.

No matter what happens, I'm just glad WAS wasn't the team to give Cobb that contract. OOF!

2 years $66M.  Ooff.  Lots of $s.
Good for him. Never even threatened the possibility of a holdout. You don't want to give me a longer term contract? Fine. I'll just play and we'll see where negotiations start the next time we are at the table.

I don't think WAS handled that situation badly, but it's nice to see a guy like that get rewarded. All QB's get too much blame for every team loss but for some reason he's gotten a lot more of the blame than most.

Yeah, $30 million for 3 years. I guess the Dolphins have a lot of money to spend.

Reskins offered him $8 million/yr. per J P Finlay.
As a team it's really tough to cave and pay a player big based on a very small sample of good performance. I have always rooted for Flowers because he was put in an impossible situation with the NYG imo. He was drafted way too early, put in a position that wasn't suited to him on the NFL level, and played way too early all based on how desperate the NYG were to fill the position.

I think WAS dodged a bullet there. There are just too many guys getting paid top dollar based on part of their career. You could make the same argument for the Conklin and Hooper contracts. Shaq Lawson and Arik Armstead. All at the tip top of the market for their careers. That's why I don't think they should extend Dunbar until he proves himself for another year.

Now let's hope we get a solid offer for Trent Williams today. Maybe his camp is getting restless and they come down on those absurd 20 million a year demands....

You guys don't think Cam is a target now that he's out of Carolina do you? We do have his old head coach and offensive coordinator when we won the MVP....

I sincerely hope not. I like Newton a lot, but this is a young rebuilding team that does not need one more expensive injured veteran QB. They just got rid of their expensive injured TE's.

I don't know why they're not working something out with Alex Smith to reduce his financial hit, either.

Ian Rapoport . @RapSheet

The #Redskins are signing former #Bears LB Kevin Pierre-Louis, per @SPORTSTARSNYC. An underrated player who was a favorite of defensive coordinators.
Ian Rapoport . @RapSheet

Kevin Pierre-Louis gets a 1-year deal worth up to $3.45M with playtime incentives.

I was watching a local sports talk show and the guy said that the Redskins did offer Cooper more $$$ but the Cowboys offered Cooper more guaranteed $$$.   It was a win for the Redskins, even though they didn’t get Cooper they made the Cowboys spend more than they probably would have otherwise for Cooper.

At 37yo you have to wonder if that's a locker room leadership/future assistant coach hire as they transition to a new defense. You would hope they are planning on drafting someone for him to tutor into a starting role hopefully by the start of the season. Davis would be great as a backup/situational/occasional healthy scratch player but if their plan is counting on Davis for 100+ tackles in 2020 that might be asking for too much. It's easy to root for that guy, though. Another "culture changer" just like Rivera.

Between Cole Holcomb and Sean Dion-Hamilton they may already have that young guy to tutor in house.

Davis can still play well enough to see the field and definitely seems like a strong character-add to the locker room, and mentor to whatever youngsters will listen.

Holcomb has been impressive, I'll give you that. Just keep in mind that those are both day 3 draft picks made by someone else. Often day 3 draft picks are pet projects by a past regime and a new regime is less willing to rely on them heavily.

Also, at least in CAR, Rivera led teams invested both early draft capital and salary cap into his LB's. Rivera, a former LB himself, may value the position more than almost any other coach. I wouldn't be shocked if they invest heavy draft capital to replace "ok" or even "good" LB's given how important they are to his system.

I took Tua for you guys in the shark pool mock. Respond with a heart or a crying face. Hope it makes sense to the fans- Haskins didn’t look great. Put feelers out for trades with Mia and SD a while back with no response.

Haskins DID look great over his last few games. Its way to premature to assume he can't be a good or very good franchise QB. He only had 1 year of college experience right? Sometimes it takes these young men time to learn the game. He didn't get the benefit Mahomes got studying and watching for 16 games his rookie year. He was thrown into an unbelievably dysfunctional crappy offense without a legit left tackle, no tight end security blanket to speak of, a 45 year old RB, and only 1 nfl worthy WR who happened to be a rookie. I don't believe ANY QB would have been put in a position to excel in that offense last year. But Rivera gives me a great hope running things. And clearly they are trying to upgrade the weapons (as they offered $22 mil a year to get Cooper and also bid for Hooper) Help is coming, and I think the Redskins would be foolish to give up on Haskins this early. Take the generational pass rusher unless someone offers RG3 trade compensation and see what having a real coach and GM can do for this franchise.

You make some good points, but I disagree with the take. Haskins was a mid first for a reason, and even then was panned as a reach. He put some nasty nfl tape down, and showed some improvement as the season progressed, but was hardly great vs some pretty bad teams. The surrounding cast was admittedly bad. All that said, yeah, you had one year of college tape and 1/2 a year of nfl tape. I take blue chip QB whose tape looks more promising.

I'll take Haskins over Tua who does get injured a bit, whose current physical status isn't fully known and won't be for awhile due to virus measures,  and who hasn't played in the league yet. I think Haskins will pick up where he left off last year,  look more confident each game and keep progressing. I like watcing him out there. The ball just flies out of his hand.

Well sounds like I did exactly what the Washington’s would do, anger their fans.

To be fair, I was really hoping to trade back for you guys, but I personally think Tua is the better prospect, but I also didn’t like the pick for Washington so that plays into it as well I’m sure, but hey, I’m the new GM and have no ties to Haskins.

Seems like DET has more or less painted themselves into a "corner"(pun intended) by signing Trufant before they were able to deal Slay. That puts them in the same position the Skins are at with Williams, player has wanted to get traded for a full year and seems desperate to get out of town. Skins have a desperate need for a CB even after signing Kendall Fuller. DET always needs help on the OL and maybe now DET realizes just how bad it can get if Stafford goes down again. Both teams seem to want too much compensation for any team that has to give the player an extension.

They seem like natural trade partners? At least both players could start contract negotiations at ground zero with a new franchise that needs their services.
