***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (2 Viewers)

This will likely lead to a good test of the culture change. Dan didn't seem to interfere when Haskins was benched earlier this year, but will he have a say if Rivera wants to cut him or discipline him in some other way for this?
Ironically...long term it could be better to lose with Heinke than win with Haskins this Sunday.  Playoffs or not, we’re not winning a championship this year.  But If we are ever to climb to those heights, the team will need to learn discipline. Letting him play Sunday would send the wrong message.

i guess the only alternative to this would be if Rivera let the team vote on it.  If the team wanted him to play, then that gives Rivera some cover.  But either way, If you let Haskins skate here, you are gonna lose some credibility holding other guys accountable.

This is thorny issue that has to be handled deliberately.  I think though Rivera needs to look long term and not play Haskins, even if it costs them the playoffs.  If dan doesn’t allow it,  then Rivera might as well quit becAuse he’s doomed.

I don't know Rivera well but do you think he wants cover? I'm hoping personally that he is the kind of coach that doesn't. That it is his team and he'll run it as he sees fit. They need a strong lead figure, not one that bend to the will of the players.

Yeah that’s why I think he just needs to bite the bullet and not play Haskins, even if Alex is hurt, and even if it costs us the playoffs

Saw something on the NFL ticker about D. Watson having some kind of event/maskless situation. Hasn't gottten much attention, but I believe he received a fine, and obviously no suspension.

If this is the case, why is Haskins being talked about for suspension?

I think they are taking SOME criticism, but it’s not exactly the same situation either. First, this is Haskins’s 2nd violation of protocols. Second, while more than 3 players gathering at an event and all those guys not wearing masks are protocol violations and should be punished and criticized appropriately, guys supporting a teammates business opening just has a different feel than a player going and hanging out at a strip club.

probably because no pics... and people want to bury Haskins away

the NFL punishment protocols are random AF

This is Haskins’ 2nd offense caught violating Covid protocols. I would guess the reason it hasn’t received as much attention is that it’s not as juicy of a story. Watson going to support a teammate’s business doesn’t have the same juice as a bust NFL QB partying maskless with strippers after a loss and risking the health and availability of his locker room before their biggest game in years.

The optics of this for Haskins couldn’t be worse. And the situation between Watson and Haskins couldn’t be more different. Houston’s season is over. Haskins risked the health and availability of players before the team’s biggest game in years. He risked the potential clinching of a division title, a playoff game, further revenue for the team and players. Add to that it’s his second offense and his general sullen attitude since being demoted, and the team would be totally justified in suspending him for conduct detrimental to the team.

I don’t know about suspension but the context is way different.  Haskins has a history of immature actions, has never proven himself, and is a repeat Covaid defender. Plus this happens right before we need HIM for a playoff play in game.  Context matters.

Beyond that, I’m not sure why Washington needs to look to Houston for how to run their football team.  Let’s say Houston let’s Watson skate.  Ok.  That doesn’t mean it’s right for WFT to ignore Dwaynes actions.  Whether it’s a fine, suspension or some other discipline it’s important that Rivera sends a message here.

this just my opinion of course but I don’t by the whole “yeah but he did XYZ argument” ....

I wonder if this means they tested the women:

The Football Team and the NFL have apparently determined that Haskins’ breach didn’t put him at high risk of contracting COVID-19 and that he’s permitted to be around the team.
They obviously tested Haskins, but I assume it could take a few days to get a positive test after exposure? IDK. Seems like a good way to be sure that he's not at high risk is to have the women tested.

It’s Rivera’s team so he makes the decisions.  But from what I know if you catch it Sunday you may not test positive until days later.  The team better hope he’s not actually got it and spreading it to the entire offense.  That would be so Redskins...

All in all I’m torn on this decision.  Rivera has basically said “you are accountable for your actions...unless we need you for the big game.”  It May work our for him but I can’t help but think this could hurt his ability to hold others accountable later.

but I do think Rivera is a good man so I’ll trust him.  I just hope and prey this wasn’t a case Of Snyder forcing the decision on Ron.

”The culture is damn good”

Here is the punishment:

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/12/23/dwayne-haskins-apologizes-to-team-fined-40000-stripped-of-captaincy/

Dwayne Haskins apologizes to team, fined $40,000, stripped of captaincy

Washington stripped Dwayne Haskins of his captaincy as part of his punishment for visiting a strip club in violation of the league’s COVID-19 protocols.

Coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday the quarterback apologized to his teammates and was punished for his Sunday night transgression. He will not lose his job.

If Alex Smith can’t start Saturday against Carolina, Haskins will, Rivera said.

“One thing I appreciated was his honesty in the conversation,” Rivera said, via Kimberley A. Martin of ESPN. “He and I probably have talked five or six times in the past two days.”

But Haskins will pay a price for the photographs posted on social media showing him at the club without a mask.

“There have been consequences and we’re moving forward,” Rivera said, via JP Finlay of NBCSportsWashington.com.

Haskins’ teammates had voted him a team captain during camp. All 32 starting quarterbacks on opening day wore the C on their jerseys.

Haskins no longer will.

The team also fined Haskins $40,000, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports. Rapoport added that it’s the “largest known fine for a player for a COVID-19 violation — more than half of Haskins’ weekly paycheck.”

Washington has not had any player on its active roster test positive for COVID-19 this season.

Yes so they can say they held him accountable.  That and loss of captain status is something at least.  At least Rivera made his statement now they can focus on sunday
I assume they have some good evidence that there's no reason to think he was exposed. I hope so, at least. For example, maybe it was a high-priced escort type of business that's regularly testing their employees.

Todays presser if Ron tells the truth ...   "Well DC.  I woke up this morning and realized we can't make the playoffs with Steve Montez.  And Alex may be out.  Plus I'm stuck with Dwayne's rookie contract.  So what I'm gonna do is dock this guy $40K that he probably doesn't need.  Plus I took away his captaincy.  Now I know his captaincy doesn't mean a lot since Dan Snyder made me give it to him.  But, I really need to win this weekend.  Thank you for your time."

I get the bind Rivera is in.  And that 3rd stringing Haskins wouldn't really help the team the rest of the year.  But what he did is like me getting a $10 fine and being told I will get paid the same moving forward for less job duties.

Says he was at a birthday party with his girlfriend. Every headline talked about strippers or a strip club. I wonder where the stripper angle came from? It was interesting seeing people mention the stripper thing but then say that part doesn't matter and that the important thing is the covid violation...but, of course, still had to mention the stripper thing...even though it didn't matter...and possibly wasn't true.

It should be trivial to look up the IG accounts of the girls who were tagged in that original photo.

He said himself that strippers were present at this party, and in the pics it’s pretty obvious anyway. Unless he’s got some other friends flapping their bare butt-cheeks in his face. If he wants to spend Dan’s money on strippers, have at it. The problem here was the lack of self awareness risking the health of the locker room and availability of players a week before the franchise’s biggest game in years.

For him this is all damage control at this point. As for the punishment, it was clear Ron was in a bind here. I still contend that if the QB room was healthy (Smith and Allen available) he would have likely cut him. There is still no future for this guy here. That ship has sailed at this point.

I find it humorous that his girlfriend had female strippers at her party.  Some women will do anything to keep these athletes.  Gotta get my wife on this plan...  well maybe not... story... so my buddy gets invited to a Redskins Offensive lineman's party in Eastern MD (name will not be mentioned).  They go over there and it's like stripper central.  Women walking around naked, hot tubs, liquor flowing, rappers, Bentleys, etc.  His girlfriend (wife now) is pretty good looking, maybe a 9/10.  15 minutes in the house and several guys had already asked his girlfriend to go to bedrooms with them.  Once right in front of him.  They decide really quick they gotta get outta there.  They drove 1.5 hours to get to the party, spent 15 minutes there with guys trying to steal his girl, got in the car and drove all the way back to Nova.   Said eventually he was gonna lose her to one of them and he had to pull the great escape 🤣

Is this...The Big One we’ve been waiting for in terms of Snyder scandals? Finally? Snyder clashed with the original investigator the NFL endorsed, then this 1.6M sexual harassment lawsuit personally involving him was leaked, and now the NFL has gotten an ex US Attorney to look into the situation further? Might this finally be getting to the point where changes could be forced?

Dont get me excited!

When I reflect on the Haskins thing, it really pisses me off.  I get that he has some raw ability and may be improving slowly with experience.  But the Covaid thing (second time he's violated this year) is deeply disrespectful to your teammates and to their families.  Not only could you start an outbreak on your team, sinking their playoff chances, but you could get one of your teammates sick, which could spread to their family members and seriously hurt someone.  You don't need 5 years of NFL experience to know that's stupid and disrespectful.

I have a hunch that if Smith can't go, we may even see Heinke starting....
I have not heard anything, but Haskins could be subject to league or team discipline.  Missing a game is not out of the question.

And I'm sure he will say all the right things.  Nobody ever says the wrong things when they know the cameras are on.  Manziel, Russell, Lawrence Phillips, OJ ... everyone will say the right things when they want their love back.  Well, maybe not Ryan Leaf.  he was a total idiot

oh man when Ryan leaf compares himself to you...

Saw that Alex Smith said he was playing this weekend! Hope that is true. He gives us a MUCH better chance to win out than Dumbaskins does! (I'd like to trademark that) ;)

Like all of us here, I would love this to be the case, but according this ESPN article it appears that the ex US Attorney was brought in to investigate the claims that Danny is being extorted by the minority owner, not focusing on him. I love how Danny boy is trying to spin this as he’s the victim here. And the claim that he cut a check for 1.6 mil just to avoid the bad publicity and that he was completely innocent is laughable. Rich guys don’t stay rich handing out million dollar plus checks to every person coming along with a threat. Of course he’s not going to admit wrongdoing in the deal. That’s what the money is for.

Haskins starting today. Damn.

Smith must still be in real bad shape. This makes me doubt he’s going to be able to return at all this season. You know starting this clown Haskins is an absolute last resort for Ron. Skins need a massive upgrade in the QB position next year.

This is the most nervous I've been for a game ever. I bet $180 at +950 the Skins would win the division about 8 weeks ago. If they win today I win $1800.

One time please

Classic Haskins move. Guy is probably still admiring a nice off script throw the play before. Too busy smelling his own farts and throws a just brutal pick the very next play. Terrible.

Milky, you know you're cursed. Why would you do that? By the way, Diontae went 8-75-1 today.

Haskins has 37 yards passing and 2 interceptions at halftime.  I know its not all his fault, but any chance he gets benched for the QB they just called up from the practice squad?

I wanted to give him every benefit of the doubt. But now there isn't any.
At least Gibson looked good in his return.  And we still have a chance to win division next week.  For some reason, though, I am not optimistic about beating Philadelphia. I think it may be likely that they beat us pretty handily.  Our defense is good but you just can’t win with half a team...

I would think this is the end of Haskin's tenure in Washington.  He was benched for a practice squad player, who clearly outplayed him.  I would even venture to say that if Heinicke started the game, they would have had a chance to win it.  They had no chance with Haskins in the game.
