Everyone knows this team has had a toxic culture and perhaps always will, but that's off to the side of play on the field. They are 2 different things.

As much as we all dislike Snyder, he's too busy making other mistakes to be screwing up the on-field stuff. 

Ron is the one making a mess of the on-field.  He has too much trust in coaches and players he's worked with.  He's also stubborn.  I get it.  If any one of us started a company, we're bringing in friends to help with sales, accounting, whatever.  But we aren't bringing in friends that failed at their previous jobs.  Jon Bostic, Curtis Samuels, and Kyle Allen are perfect examples.  One is aged and slow.  The other is hurt all the time.  The other got hurt and was mediocre at best (but possibly their best QB the last 2 seasons).   And he's the final decision maker on the trades/FA signings.  So Mayhew might as well be sitting at home cutting his toenails.

Ron needs to get out of the personnel side of it.  It's a nice theory to have a HC do both, but it relies on them being awesome at two things.  He simply hasn't proven he is.  Or that he is good at either for that matter.

They should be brining in any QB that is better than Taylor.  Any.  If that's Turdbisky, so be it.  It was Darnold over the offseason.  It certainly wasn't a old guy for 1 year, though they would have been better with Fitz.  But bring in anyone that has any chance of being this teams QB for 3-5 years, and cut them if they don't work out.  But stop relying on guys that CAR doesn't even want

Few HC's can do both well, and something is obviously wrong with how Rivera's doing it. He'd be better off just coaching. If he doesn't trust Mayhew and Hurney then why are they here? The personnel the team has should be playing better than they are on defense. The offense is lacking good personnel, the O-line in particular.

 
Why is Chris Blewitt still on the team?  Seriously.  Other than apparently you don't cut a kicker if there's no one proven out there to replace him?  No, a steady guy like Rivera would never do that...

Rivera not looking so hot now.  I get it; you made a mistake.  Hopkins was serviceable but not elite and you cut him for a prospect, who does not seem to have the stuff to make it in the NFL.  It's ok you made a mistake. It's not ok to shut your eyes, plug your ears, and pretend it didn't happen.

Kind of losing respect for coach a little bit, which is sad;  I've always liked him...

Hopkins is already kicking for another NFL team, Blewitt is failing, and that move worked out badly. It was generally thought "fire the kicker" was the easiest way to show the team Rivera was serious about performance standards needing to be met. Now, as you said, it looks like he's holding onto Blewitt just because he chose him.

It'll be easy for things to become a real trainwreck between now and the end of the year, especially if they get jackhammered by Tampa Bay after the bye. I hope that doesn't happen.

Even if Hopkins is elsewhere, you gotta find someone else right?  Some young kicker fresh out of college that didn't make a team?  Blewitt only made 64% and 58% of his FGs the last 2 years in college.  That's awful.  And he's 4 years removed from college.  It's fine to try someone other than Hopkins, but when that choice is wrong you gotta have more kickers in the well and give them a chance.  A quality personnel guy would have 4+ kickers in here already.  And I suspect we will see that over the bye week.

I didn’t mind cutting Hopkins at all, but Blewit should never have been brought here in the first place, and he certainly shouldn’t be here now. 

I’m a bit shocked they haven’t made a move for Joey Slye who was cut loose. With him being a former Panther I figured Ron would have the contract printed already.

I see no reason to change him out.  He's the likely backup for next year if they pick up a vet.  Or a short term starter if they draft someone.  Might as well get him some extra playing time.   Fitz can plan retirement and Kyle Allen can plan his next 1 year min contract holding the clipboard.

Assuming NYJ and JAX don't take QB, that leaves DET, PHI, and WAS fighting it out for the best QB.  And it's hard to tell who that is right now.

They will also have almost $65M in cap space next year.  Can sign tons of players that CAR cuts.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the current front office being able to do this wisely. I figure Rivera currently has final say on all signings, and also doesn't have enough time to evaluate and understand all potential signings. He's stretched too thin, obviously. 

Also think that Josh Allen needs to start 2-3 games this year to see what he's got. He's younger than Heinicke and taller. Might as well take a look. This year is a loss.

Seriously.  I went to VT so I'm happy for Slye.  But Rivera clearly doesn't realize that there are good players in the NFL that he hasn't already coached.

He also has the beard of Fitzpatrick and the guns of Hulk Hogan.  So maybe they can try him at QB or LB.

Were we all joking that Ron was a lock to pick up Slye, and of course he does it. I’m honestly surprised it took this long. Bringing in Blewitt in the first place was roster management malpractice, but it’s truly comical how Ron only has eyes for former Panthers. I have less trust in this front office with every move they make at this point. 

 
The Athletic's Ben Standig reported that Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip) was expected to get an MRI early this week.

The Football Team has kept quiet about Fitzpatrick, who hasn't played since he exited in Week 1 with a hip injury. An MRI would provide insight as to where he is in the recovery process, so fantasy managers who are invested in the Washington offense will need to keep an eye out for an update over the next few days.

Curtis Samuel is not practicing, and is "meeting with doctors". My guess is he'll end up on IR and we won't see him this year.

Personally, I wish they would shut Gibson down for a bit and let him heal properly.  This season is done; I'd rather have him healthy for later this season or next year.  In the meantime, give Patterson a run and see if you have something there in terms of backup or RB who can be part of a RB rotation.

Curtis Samuel SMH.  Just...SMH.

 
What are your thoughts on Chase Young's "I was just making money, baby" comments.

My take:

1. There is nothing wrong with making money in the offseason.

2.  While going to OTAs would have been ideal, particularly as the team had high turnout and he was team captain, they are also clearly OPTIONAL, so I can't totally kill him for it.

3.  With both of those things said, his comments in response to missing OTAs to follow up on these deals were pretty damning I think.  He comes off as not  being accountable for his terrible on field performance or honestly even caring whether he performs well or not.  Of course, I believe he DOES care, but the comments come off as immature at best.  Why not say something like, "We certainly haven't played up to our expectations this year and we are working hard every week on it.  WHile I missed OTAs, I worked hard in training camp and felt ready.  All I can do is keep working hard in practice until we turn this thing around."

THEN THE MEDIA WOULD LET IT GO!!!

But now, he looks immature, spoiled, surly and unaccountable.  Not a good look.  Hard for me to say, I really like Chase and what he has to offer but he needs to get his head out of his butt so he doesn't become a "one year wonder."  Potential is nice.  THe great players follow that up with hard work and committment...

I'm more concerned with Rivera starting to call him out publicly. If Young's not playing well that should be addressed privately. A HC in control of his team doesn't need to call players out publicly.

 
Curtis Samuel (groin) is out for Week 10. 

Washington head coach Ron Rivera said Friday that the team would "exhaust" all options before placing Samuel on season-ending IR. Samuel has struggled with a groin issue since the spring; he's played one full game for the Football Team in 2021. He's little more than a dynasty stash who could be a central part of Washington's passing offense if he can ever recover from the groin injury.

Woah what just happened!  A 19 play, ten minute drive to salt the game away vs. the defending champs?  Heinicke making smart reads and timely throws.  Gibson running like a beast and McLaren holding on the ball in the face of ferocious hits? Sam Huff was looking down and nodding in appreciation!

Super bummed about Chase Young.  TEam fears he has torn his ACL but I'm sure an MRI is coming to learn more.

But good to see the remaining guys answer the call and come up with a big win.  The team really needed that.  Happy for them...

 
His stats don’t look great, but I thought Gibson had a good game. Several times in the first half he was getting hit five yards deep in the backfield once he got the ball. And liked seeing him line up out wide a few times and getting a couple targets on those routes.

Yeah I agree.  I am just super impressed with how tough he is...doesn't want to go down.  

 
It’s so like us to win games like this.  Didn’t see the game other than highlights but glad they played well.  Would have liked better draft positioning

Me too. But this was one of Taylor's best games. He didn't really make any bad plays. And very happy to see Gibson looking healthy again. That bye week was exactly what he needed. 

 
I got to see this whole game on TV and I was sure all those first-half drives that ended up in FG's would doom them at the end of the game as they usually do. I was not expecting a start-to-finish good performance from both sides of the ball. That 19-play 10:29 glacial backbreaking drive at the end of the game was a thing of beauty, and almost every one of those 19 plays was full of doubts on my part. Today was as good as they can play. This is who they are now when they play their complete best. Heinicke was very good, and inspirational. Gibson was the same, inspirational, just seemed too pissed off to even go down. Which leads to the other big part of this win.......

.... The defense played a lot more aggressively. There was no sit-back-and-keep-things-in-front-of-you BS that always results in the opposing team moving up and down the field at will. They contested everything.

Really happy with the way they played and the unexpected win, and at the same time I know this is Washington. This will be "one they build on" as they drive towards a 7-10 season and much worse draft position.

One thing we haven't talked about yet...the new kicker Slye performed admirably Sunday.  I know he wasn't booming 55 yarders with time expiring, but he was solid in a way you want kickers to be.  Blewitt would have blasted a few of those early ones into the backs of lineman's helmets, the team would have deflated, and the game would have gone sideways.  

Not saying Slye is a world beater, but at least he's a legitimate NFL pro kicker in a way that Blewitt was not.

The other interesting thing to me is apparently with Hopkins, it took like 6 weeks to ""work out the operation and get on the same page," while meanwhile Slye is brought in on the bye week and goes 3-3 FG and also perfect on XP...all you can ask.

One more thing on Heinicke...commentators mentioned it, he finally seems to be starting to find the right balance between risk taking (run and throw) vs. conservative ball protection (finding the check down guy).   I thought a few times he took sacks trying to hold it for a big throw too long when he had a guy open for a check down, but I guess it's a balance.  After watching him this season, I'm not sure he has the stuff to be a starter on a championship team but I'm happy for him and i don't think we could find a better backup...

I would be more worried about Chase Young and not because of his injury. Dude has zero motor and one move. He’s also a drama queen. 
 

Grats on the win. My FIL came up from SC to go to the game so I was happy for him. 

 
As someone who rosters Chase Young and spent a high IDP pick to get him, I was very concerned when he skipped OTAs and spent recommended time with the team away from it to train on his own. That always piques my interest, and sure enough, he had a terrible year before the injury. Didn't know about the "money, baby" or the HC calling him out. That's even worse. Oof.

And he looked bad this year. I would often key on him when he was on the line and he, even when he wasn't doubled, wasn't getting an awful lot of penetration.

What a wasted top of the second-round pick by me. Hope he's okay in time for next year.

define it?  Hes an ok backup.  Hes not a franchise QB.  Hes in the bottom quarter of the league in most stats.  I like the kid.  Keep him as a backup.  But we need a QB.  And he is not it.

You can’t define “it”. That’s why it’s called that. Taylor Heinicke is a very young mostly inexperienced player who is learning on the job. Just like every other young QB. They all struggle until they figure out how to read defenses and adapt. 
 

The same people who are saying that this kid can’t succeed and play at a high-level are the same exact people who also said guys like Dak Prescott are bums. It’s what’s between the ears and in the heart. Some people have “it” and most don’t. 

But go ahead, draft a first round quarterback, start him right away, criticize him and run him out of town. Just like every other quarterback who’s ever come into this town.

Very young?  He’s 28.  Also not sure what dak has to do with this although dak is also 28…. And Light years better though. 
 

The plan isn’t to bring someone in and start them right away******.  Fitzpatrick was here to help develop the rest of the team while finding a replacement.  I’m glad Taylor got further chances as i do like him as a backup.  But he’s not the answer.  He’s a gamer though and i like that.  But no he’s not the future of this franchise.  

 

****these are my views.  Pinky can’t be held responsible for the inept front offices decisions nor does he support many of their past decisions.  Also ^+%% Dan Snyder.
