I think it would take a hell of a lot of time to get the Timberwolves to give up their rights to the name. Nobody likes Dan Snyder, and regardless of the amount offered they'd likely say "screw that guy." And it would delay their precious "annoucement" an indefinite amount of time to work out, embarrassing the team even more.

They aren’t going to he the Washington Timberwolves and Redwolves (as terrible as it is) could be easily argued to be nothing at all close to “timberwolves”. It’s two separate words and species and leagues and sports. There’s zero overlap, and there are teams in other professional sports who share the exact same name (Cardinals, Giants, Rangers, Jets, etc)

I understand that, but other teams have similar names, and Washington knows they'll be tied up in legal issues if they use Red Wolves.

More than anything, this season crumbled because Washington failed in the draft and free agency last year. First-round pick Jamin Davis struggled mightily, and linebackers taken in the top 20 shouldn’t be slow-developing talents. Second-round tackle Sam Cosmi and fourth-round tight end John Bates were the two draft picks who showed the most promise, but Cosmi missed half the season because of injuries.

The 2021 free agent class was a bigger disaster. Bothered by a bad groin injury, wide receiver Curtis Samuel was able to participate in just five games. Ryan Fitzpatrick, brought in to be the team’s stopgap starting quarterback, injured his hip in Week 1 and couldn’t play the rest of the season.

After one year, the decision to let Kyle Smith go and bring in Mayhew and Hurney isn't looking very good.  Of course, one year is a very small sample size to judge your GMs, but the poor performance is definitely worth noting.

 
Ready for a super depressing stat fellow Washington fans? We are now tied with the Lions as the team that has gone the longest without reaching a division final (30 years) Can't help but wonder where we would be right now if 2 years ago we had the 1.1 instead of the 1.2 and were able to draft Burrow as our franchise QB.... :sadbanana:

Hey get us a QB that can zip the ball and this offense will take off. I still think Terry is a top 5 WR in the league, and Curtis Samuel should help the offense next year assuming he's healthy (outside of last year I think he was pretty healthy in Carolina)  Add in Thomas, Gibson, this offense isn't THAT awful IF we are healthy and have a QB.

I remember watching that NFC championship game and thinking, you know what, neither of these teams seem that great. I bet the Redskins won't get back to the NFC championship for the next 30 years. And Detroit? I don't think they will win a playoff game in the next 30 years. Too bad I didn't put any money on it.

Maybe you're thinking of a different game because just about everyone realizes the '91 Redskins were great.

Lol, no I was just being sarcastic. The '91 Redskins may have been the greatest team of all time. That offense, statiscally was one of the best of all time, and their defense was really good too. Being an Eagles fan, I still maintain that the Eagles defense in 1991 was the best of all time, they were just saddled with Rich Kotite and a QB collective of Cunningham/McMahon/Kemp/Goebel/Ryun. Cunningham only played one quarter of the opening game before his knee was blown out by Bryce Paup. So the '91 Redskins were in the same division as the defending SB champs (Giants), A Cowboys team that was making the playoffs for the first time under Jimmy Johnson and would go on to win the SB 3 of the next 4 years, and the 10-6 Eagles with the great defense (but didn't make the playoffs).

I have always respected who the Redskins were under Joe Gibbs, who has to be in the top 2 or 3 coaches of all time.

It's just the opposite.  Congress announced its schedule after the WFT did.  It's a bunch of politicians trying to get their moment of glory 'fighting for the people' at a time where people will pay attention.  You wanna fight for the people ... investigate all these claims ... Deshaun Watson, Bob Kraft, and on and on

They can't handle more PR hits w Watson, and he could get suspended anyway.  Too much risk that he never steps on the field again. .Rodgers wouldn't touch this place with 1000 mile pole.   Wilson ... maybe, but if he can get NYG or MIA his brand goes a lot farther there and that is a lot of $$$..  I doubt WAS is in his top 5.

I think they could pay a lot for Carr, and it would be a good thing.  But I don't see LV giving up on him.

Which means draft is most likely.  Heck, take a QB in Round 1 and a QB in Round 2 and let them fight it out.  Let Taylor hold the clipboard.  That's 3 QBs on essentially rookie deals.  Lot's of money left to surround with talent until their next contract.

ETA ... tomorrow  or whenever will be the least cared about day in the history of WAS.  The fans don't want a change.  The owner doesn't want a change.  And it will be a lame name that nobody gets behind.  I wish they would stick with WFT.  I think it's good like that.  C'est la vie ... yea Commanders.

I seem to recall hearing Aaron Schatz talking at one point about how that team basically broke Football Outsiders' DVOA model because they are far and away the best team they've ever measured by that standard

Oh God, that's doubly depressing for me. I grew up in NJ, exactly halfway between NY and Philly, and never cheered for any of their sports teams. Instead, I mostly adopted the loyalties of my dad, who's from Detroit, and rooted for the Tigers, Pistons and Lions. However, my mom is from DC, and I was eight when Riggins busted off that 4th and 1 against the Dolphins. So I've spent almost my entire life as a football bigamist, rooting equally for Detroit and Washington. That '91 game was obviously quite a dilemma for me. I mostly rooted for Detroit since they had never won, while also knowing they had zero chance of winning. 

Anyway, super depressing that neither team has made it back to a championship game since then. IIRC, Washington has only made it to a couple divisional rounds (the following year when they beat Minny and lost to SF and '06 when they beat Tampa and lost to Seattle). Detroit, obviously, hasn't won a single playoff game. Also, during that entire time neither team has earned a first-round bye.

 
Maybe they're marketing geniuses and decided to "accidentally" release a fake bad name so whatever mediocre name they announce today sounds much better.

 
Two year brand search to end up with the name and slogan of an AAF team?

Not a Washington fan but the helmet on the black jersey is really weird. Was hoping they’d pick a new identity but feels like they just picked a generic name out of a name generator.
