I'm guessing they're thinking "good player will respond to good coaching on a good team" since Peters drafted him.

General manager Adam Peters was with the San Francisco 49ers when Kinlaw was drafted with the 14th overall pick in the 2020 draft.

I don't know, that feels like Peters chasing a sunk cost to me.

"Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.co, the Commanders are sending a 2025 third-round pick, a 2025 seventh-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Texans. The Texans are sending a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Commanders, with Tunsil. Tunsil is signed for two more years. He has a base salary of $20.95 million in 2025 and a $20.95 million salary in 2026. He also has annual workout bonuses of $150,000 and $250,000 in per-game active roster bonuses."

"In 2019, he was traded to Houston for a package headlined by two first-round picks and a second-round pick."
 
So we move down from the 3rd round to the 4th round this year, give up a 7th this year, give up a 2nd and 4th next year, for a 5-time pro bowler who's still playing well.
Not bad.
 
As a Texans fan, it sounds like a decent deal for both sides. For us, Tunsil’s false starts points to effort and Ryans finally apparently had enough of it. He was solid against the pass but weak against the run and the Texans want to run. Having 19 penalties last year didn’t help his case in Houston.

He’s going to demand an extension as well. Texans have Stingley, CJ, and Will Anderson contracts coming to have too much $$$ tied up in one position. Good couple of years protecting JD’s passing is likely but I’d watch that extension and make sure someone is there to hold him accountable for effort.

"Logan Paulsen was on the radio and had a solid breakdown of the Javon Kinlaw acquistion. While acknowledging that 15mill represents a bit of a gamble on a player with Kinlaw's resume, it's a calculated gamble with payoff. Pointed out that since the Seahawks days, DQ has liked to use DT as DEs in certain formations and rotations. With Kinlaw's blend of size and athleticism, he can not only rotate inside with Newton and Payne, but can lineup on the end as well.

Noted that the last few games of the season, Kinlaw put together some of his best performances. And overall, had his best year since coming back from ACL surgery. Also said that you have to notice that even though Kinlaw did not pan out in SanFran, the guys who were there with him - first Saleh in NY, then AP here - both still wanted him. In terms of talent and character they still think he's an asset and see him putting it together. Peters probably sees an opportunity to get an "ascending" guy, who, if he hits, would be a bargain at 15mill still in his prime considering what the DT market is like these days."

The #Commanders are hosting WR Michael Gallup on a visit tomorrow, source said. A ton of familiarity on that staff.

Gallup retired last year. I'd be happy if they put a little more effort into finding WR's. We don't know what Deebo will produce, McLauren is great but opponents cover him tightly, and after that................... I guess Zaccheus is their best WR.

Was wishfully hoping he wouldn't find a satisfactory suitor for his services on the open market, and we'd be able to come to an agreement to bring him back.

He labored so long here, and classily so, under the duress of the Snyder regime; deserves to reap the fruit of what's being sown in the new era.

Agree with all you've said. Allen's been through a lot of adversity both in his childhood and his adult life. I hope he does well on and off the field.
3 years, $60 million is what he got from the Vikings.

From what I've read he's considered a downgrade. I don't even know who he is.
I think Chinn had so many tackles last year because the rest of the defense sucked, so perhaps Chinn is a little overrated at this time.

In my younger years, I never thought I'd reach the point where I couldn't name everyone on the team. But, as life goes, I reached that point many years ago. When my sons text me who we've signed or traded for, my first thought is, "Who is that? Is he good?"
 
I've been the same for several years, not knowing all the players, especially towards the end of seasons after injuries hit.
me: "Holy crap, look at that interception"
wife: "Who caught it?"
me: "Some guy who I didn't know was on the team, who is my hero at the moment"

Ask @BobbyLayne or any Detroit Lions fan...Will Harris is a downgrade. Neither of us knew he was still in the league. I couldn't believe how many snaps he used to get here.

Ask @BobbyLayne or any Detroit Lions fan...Will Harris is a downgrade. Neither of us knew he was still in the league. I couldn't believe how many snaps he used to get here.

Well he can’t cover or tackle - career passer rating of 111.2 & miss tackle % of 10.5%

but coaches love his versatility

he actually played decent last year for the Saints, across the board low 60s in all his PFF grades

60 is replacement level starter

Well if he can repeat what he did for the Saints last year it shouldn't be too much of a dropoff, I guess. If I remember correctly Chinn wasn't thought highly of a year ago either.

My best read on the OL situation:
*Coleman moves to RT.
* Wylie becomes backup OT - Lucas moving on is telling in this regard - and a good bet to play RG until Cosmi returns. Some form of contract restructure.
* Need more OL depth
* Tunsil, NA, Biadasz, (healthy) Cosmi, (developing) Coleman HUGE improvement over what AP inherited. After QB, OL matters most on offense.
